Lesson title: Maths Measuring length using informal units. Curriculum:

Use scaled instruments to measure and compare lengths, masses,
capacities and temperatures (ACMMG084).
Duration of lesson: 60min Compare objects using familiar metric units of area
and volume (ACMMG290).

Considerations for diversity (extension/alteration):

Students will be working together during this lesson. Some of the
exercised may be altered or changed, based on students ability to
complete the tasks.
(Purpose and learning outcomes)
Aim of the lesson: Students will measure and compare lengths using an informal instrument, identify formal and metric
units of length.

Resources: Whiteboard and accessories.

Students will need their maths books, pencils, rulers, erasers, scissors, glue, A3 paper and informal measuring equipment.

Introduction: (5min)
Introduce myself and set the expectations of the class regarding behaviour.
Teacher Introduce the lesson as per the aim.
Teacher Today students will look at the common units of measurement, mm, cm, m, kms.

Body: (32mins)
Teacher Handing out a piece of A3 paper to each student.
Students will fold the paper into 4 equal section.
Teacher will demonstrate. Once this is completed, students will do.
Teacher will cut each quarter out along the folded line.
Students will cut each even piece out. Once they have cut them out, put each piece on their desks.
Teacher to the students, glue the ends of the strips together. Students will glue the ends of the paper together.
Teacher Now in pairs, one student will hold their piece of paper at arms length. The other student will mark it out so it is the
width of their arms span.
Student Once they have marked the arms span, that student will cut their paper to be that size.
Teacher Students will reverse the role not, so the other student has the same length paper as their arms length. Show C2C
as an example for the students.
Teacher Now you have this done, we are going to use it to measure some items around the classroom. You will work in pairs
with a student of their choice. Teacher will put up the table down below, for the students to measure.
Students will copy the table down in their Maths books. They will write their answers in there.
Teacher Students I want you to think about the arms span measuring tool to answer the questions in their maths books.
Write short answers to the following questions after you have measured the five objects with your arm span measuring strip.

a) How accurate are the measurements? Why do you think that is?

b) What is a disadvantage in using the arm span measuring strip as a measuring tool?

c) What changes could you make to the arm span measuring strip to make it more accurate?
Teacher - For the rest of the lesson revert to the attached C2C sheet. Students will conduct the measurements and record all
the information in their maths books.

Conclusion:
Recap the lesson for students on how they can use an informal measuring tool.
Clean-up and ready for next lesson.

Assessment: Formative observations of the class working, both individually or in pairs.

Feedback:

Follow up lesson: Lesson 23 C2C Measuring lengths using formal units.

Reflective comments and future alterations:

Object Less than length of strip Equal to length of strip More than length of strip

a) pencil case

b) desk

c) the width of a doorway

d) the height of a wall

e) of the area they line up in

f) distance around your waist
