Procedure
Introduction 1. Get the students attention and one-by-one get them to line up at the
(5 min.) door for gym.
2. In the gym, with the students seated at the center, explain the warm-up
activity:
- Each child takes a ball and finds a space next to a wall.
- Each child practices catching by tossing their ball against
the wall above them.

- Explain that they should begin practicing catching with

two hands, but that you will be telling them different
ways to practice catching as they go. (eg. Catch with 2
hands, let ball bounce before catching, toss at different
heights, aim for target, catch with right hand, catch with
left; allow for about a minute of each and then blow
whistle for a new one).
3. Once youve explained the activity, call the students up individually to
get a ball and ask them to find some wall space and begin practicing
catching their ball. Give the students about a minute or so to practice
catching with two hands. Then blow the whistle and get them to practice
catching with one hand, then let the ball bounce before catching, and to
try aiming for different heights with the ball.
4. After about 5 minutes of this, blow the whistle and get the students to
return the balls to the basket and take a seat back in the center circle.

Body of Lesson 1. Demonstrate and explain the elements of catching to the students:
(9 min.)
- Keep your eyes on the object until it arrives in your hands.
- Get your body behind the object (i.e. in front of its flight path).
- If you see the ball passing to one side, move your whole body to
the side. Dont just reach your arms out to the side.
- If the object is arriving above your waist, your palms face
forward, your fingers point up, and your two thumbs should be
touching.
- If the object is arriving below the waist, your palms face
forward, your fingers point down, and your two pinky fingers
should be touching.
- As you receive the object with your hands, you should bend your
arms and bring the object in towards your body.
- Cues: Eyes on the ball; Get behind the ball; Hands together
(pinkies or thumbs touch); Bring to body.
2. Explain the main activity to the students:
- Leader divides children into pairs.
- Each pair has a soft ball.
- When I yell cold potato, partners throw to each other.
- When I yell hot potato, whoever has the ball (or is about to

catch the ball) must toss it in the air to themselves 3 times.

- When you finish tossing to yourself, you must run to try to tag
your partner.
- When I yell cold potato again, start tossing and catching with
your partners again.
- Remind the students about the rules of tagging without pushing,
and to be careful about looking where they are going when
running.
3. As the students practice tossing and catching walk amongst them observing
them and giving them positive feedback. Blow the whistle to call out hot
potato and cold potato. Keep an eye on the clock.

Closure 1 When we have ran out of time for gym, thank the students for their hard
(1 min.) work and participation, and praise their catching skills. Ask them to put
the materials away and line-up at the door to go back to the classroom.
