Year Level: 4 Subject: Maths Key concept: Fractions Date: 8/3/2017

and decimals.
Lesson title: Maths Applying fraction understandings to solve Curriculum:
problems. 1/3 and 1/5. Investigate equivalent fractions used in contexts (ACMNA077).
Count by quarters halves and thirds, including with mixed numerals.
Locate and represent these fractions on a number line (ACMNA078).
Duration of lesson: 60mins Make connections between fractions and decimal
notation (ACMNA079).

Considerations for diversity (extension/alteration):

Students will work as a class. This groups has been based on ability
level.
(Purpose and learning outcomes)
Aim of the lesson: Students will compare and order fractions both along a number line and represented as a linear
model, area model, words. Digits and real life example for 1/3 and 1/5.

Resources: Whiteboard and accessories, Pizza Poster.

Students will need their maths books, pencils, erasers, whiteboards, markers and erasers.

Introduction: (5min)
Introduce myself and set the expectations of the class regarding behaviour. Move everyone to the front of the room.
Teacher Last lesson students continued looking at a number line representing halves, quarters, eights, and whole numbers.
Today they will explore 1/3 and 1/5.

Body:
3rds
Teacher Model what thirds are on the board using a rectangle. Teacher will shade in 1/3, then write the fraction and put it in
words.
We do Teacher will shade in 2/3, students will do the same, teacher will write the fraction, students will write the fraction,
teacher will write it in word, students will write it in words.
Teacher Hand out the printable fractions bar to the students to glue into their books. Students can use this as a reference if
needed.

Teacher Take the students outside to the undercover areas. They will make a rectangle using 14 students. Teacher will ask 2
of the remaining students to stand in 1/3 of the rectangle. They will swap over with 2 students in the rectangle. Teacher will
ask 6 of the students to stand in 2/3 of the rectangle. They will swap over with 6 students who have not had a turn. Teacher
will ask the students to stand in 3/3 of the triangle, will be 2 students in each area.
Teacher Students return to the classroom.
Teacher Rectangles are not the only way you can show thirds. Put the pizza post on the board. You can also use a circle. Using
your white board, colour in 1/3 of the circle. Show when completed.
5ths
Teacher Now we are moving onto fifths. How many fifths are there on a number line? 5/5. We have looked at 1/3, and on
a number line, where would you find fifths? See how many students refer to their fraction chart. Walk around the room and put
a 1/5 on the students desk if no fifths, use a whiteboard marker. Now head up to the board and put where you think fifths
might be?
Teacher once this has been completed, check the students work. Using the pizza chart on the board from the thirds, teacher
will show this to the students. This shows the students two different representation of the fifths. It also provides the students
with a real-life example using pizza.

Teacher demonstrates this on the board downtime students will play a game of number line Battle Ship. Students using
their whiteboard they will write a number line from 0-1. On your number line, you will put 1/3, , 1/5, haves, and so on until
they have filled the number line up with fractions. Under the number line you will put a battleship which will take up three of
your fractions, and a patrol boat, which will take up two of your fractions. Students will take turns at this game. The first
student will say a fraction, and if the second students battleship or patrol boat is sitting on that fraction it is a hit. You will put
a line through that part of the ship. The game will continue until both students ships have been sunk.
Teacher Walk around and observe the students playing this game.

Conclusion:
Revise the lesson on different fractions.
Students pack away and return to their classrooms.

Assessment: Formative observations of the students working.

Feedback:

Follow up lesson: Revision for exam. Mrs Chant will be taking over next week.
