Culture is Not a Luxury, But a Necessity

Fellow Students, can anybody in this class actually define the word culture in a quick second
without hesitating or even taking a second guess?

By now you must be thinking about a million and one ways to sum up this word.

Well, let me tell you something, this word if you really think about it its quit tricky because , as ive

come to the realization,it involves a lot of things.

In search to finally put a stop to this undying question i ve encountered two definitions from the

Oxford Dictionary that state the following: The arts and other manifestations of human

intellectual achievement regarded collectively and The ideas, customs, and social

behaviour of a particular people or society

After reading this I found a sense of tranquility, due the simple fact that I was no longer a victim of

the 21 century, materialistic ignorance, or so i thought. But let me tell you , this unprecedented

felling of sudden serenity did not last for long. Subsequently ,during my drunken state of curiosity

and inner unsettlement , i kept digging through the world wide web to only discover that i was in

fact drowning in illiteracy. This is undeniably the beginning of an existential crises.

Oh comarades, without culture what are we ? What defines us ? What inspires us to be us?

Without it we are mere creatures made out of atoms! Without culture we have no inspiration to

become us because uniqueness does not have a space in this world

Culture is in fact a necessity and not a luxury.

Culture is what helps us form our character and the opinions that come hand in hand with it. How

we perceive things is largely affected by our judgment skills, preconceived notions, attitude, and

emotions. These factors are closely linked with our culture . In perceiving something as good or

bad, our biases play a role and so does our way of thinking. In judging something as easy or

difficult, our attitude and our motivation levels play a key role. Our culture determines the structure

of our thinking, which influences our perceptions.

For example ,People who belong to cultures that promote individualism tend to look at only the

main aspects of a situation, while those of a culture that promotes collectivism tend to consider

even the minor details. American culture which is predominantly individualistic, promotes giving

freedom of choice to children since a young age. The Japanese culture which promotes

collectivism, rather encourages the parents to make choices for their children. This is an example

of how parenting is perceived in contrasting ways due to the differences in culture.

Seeing has i have just now scraped on the surface of this matter on its primitive side , i`ll turn

myself now more into its intellectual side of it.

Art , music and literature reflect our society in its best and worst state. Through these craft, we are

able to understand what is actually going on in the world. Without this we are merely spectators of

our open ended life. Indifference,Blindness, Discrimination will define our existence if we are

unable to realize the importance of this complicated word. Roger Scruton, an English philosopher,

once said The Culture of a civilization is the art and the literature through which it rises to

consciousness of itself and defines its vision of the world

Art is in a sense a limitless and unfiltered way to portray our society, therefore it a viable tool in

building our unfiltered mind.

So all in all, culture is in fact a necessity and not a luxury , because without culture we have

nothing to guide us through this complicated journey we call life . Without it we are simply lost , that

meaning that we are creatures without any purpose. ALL HUMANS NEED TO HAVE ACESS TO

CULTURE AND ALSO RESPECT IT because THIS tiny word IS LIKE AN INVISIBLE BOND THAT

CONNECTS US ALL TO EACH AND EVERY BODY.
