7 RHS beam under combined bending and

torsion

7.1 Introduction
Redesign the member shown in Example 6 using a hot-finished rectangular hollow
section (RHS).

7.1.1 Factored loads

Distributed load (self-weight) w = 1.0 kN/m (assumed)
Point load W = 100 kN

To buy a hardcopy version of this document call 01344 872775 or go to http://shop.steelbiz.org/

Eccentricity e = 75 mm

7.1.2 Bending effects at ULS

Moment at B MxB = 102 kNm
Shear at A FvA = 52 kN
Shear at B FvB = 50 kN

7.1.3 Torsional effects at ULS

Torsional moment Tq =We
Tq = 100 75 103 = 7.5 kNm

7.2 Bending checks

7.2.1 Determine the effective length 4.3.5
Since the beam is unrestrained between the supports, there is only one segment length
to consider in this example, with a length equal to the beam length. In bending the
beam is simply supported.
Therefore, LE = 1.0L = 4000 mm. Table 13

7.2.2 Trial section

Try 250 x 150 x 8 RHS in S275 (Hot finished)
From section property tables:
Depth D = 250 mm
Width B = 150 mm
Web/flange thickness t = 8 mm
Area of cross section A = 60.8 cm2
Second moment of area x axis Ix = 5110 cm4 Vol 1
Radius of gyration y axis ry = 6.15 cm Page B-24
Plastic modulus x axis Sx = 501 cm3
Elastic modulus x axis Zx = 409 cm3
Elastic modulus y axis Zy = 306 cm3
Torsion constant J = 5020 cm4

7.2.3 Classify the cross section

Licensed copy:dewhurst, Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners, 13/07/2006, Uncontrolled Copy, SCI

Grade of steel = S275 3.1.1

t < 16.0 mm Table 9
Therefore p y = 275 N/mm2
275 275
= = = 1.0
py 275
For a hot finished RHS, the limiting b/t for a class 1 plastic flange is 28. 3.5.2
Limiting b/t = 28 = 28 1.0 = 28 Table 12
The actual b/t = 15.8 < 28
Therefore, the flange is class 1.

Since the section is symmetrical and subject to bending (i.e. no axial load), the neutral 3.5.2
axis is at mid depth. For this case, the limiting d/t for a class 1 plastic web is 64. Table 12
Limiting d/t = 64 = 64 1.0 = 64

To buy a hardcopy version of this document call 01344 872775 or go to http://shop.steelbiz.org/

The actual d/t = 28.3 < 64
Therefore, the web is class 1.

The flange and the web are both class 1, therefore, the cross section is class 1.

7.2.4 Check for shear buckling

If the d/t ratio exceeds 70 for a rolled section, the web should be checked for shear 4.2.3
buckling in accordance with clause 4.4.5 of BS 5950-1:2000[1].
70 = 70 1.0 = 70
In this case, d/t =28.3<70, so there is no need to check for shear buckling.

7.2.5 Check the shear capacity

Basic requirement Fv Pv 4.2.3
Pv = 0.6 pyAv
py = 275 N/mm2
Av = AD/(D+B) = 6080 250/(250+150) = 3800 mm2
Pv = 0.6 275 3800 103 = 627 kN
The highest shear force occurs at A, where Fv = 52 kN
52 kN < 627 kN
Therefore, the shear capacity is adequate.

7.2.6 Check the moment capacity

Basic requirement Mx Mcx 4.2.5
Without calculation, it is clear that the shear is low in this case.
For low shear, the moment capacity for a class 1 section is given by:
Mcx = py Sx 4.2.5.2
Mcx = 275 501 103 = 138 kNm

Check limit to avoid irreversible deformation under serviceability loads. 4.2.5.1

For a simply supported beam Mcx 1.2 pyZx

Therefore Mcx = 135 kNm
From above, Mx = 102 kNm
102 kNm < 135 kNm
Therefore, the moment capacity is adequate.

7.2.7 Lateral-torsional buckling

Licensed copy:dewhurst, Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners, 13/07/2006, Uncontrolled Copy, SCI

For an RHS, there is no need to consider lateral-torsional buckling, unless the 4.3.6.1
slenderness LE/ry exceeds the value given in Table 15 (dependent on D/B). Table 15
D/B = 250/150 = 1.67
For D/B = 1.67, the limiting LE/ry from Table 15 is 435.
The actual LE/ry = 4000/61.5 = 65
Therefore, there is no need to consider lateral-torsional buckling in this example.
Mb = Mcx = 135 kN.

7.3 Combined bending and torsion checks

As a conservative alternative to the method proposed in P057[3], the following
simplified method may be used for RHS subject to combined bending and torsion.

To buy a hardcopy version of this document call 01344 872775 or go to http://shop.steelbiz.org/

7.3.1 Internal torque
The internal torque, To, within the member due to the applied torque Tq is obtained by
considering the torsional equilibrium of the member as shown in Figure 7.1.

100 kN
75 mm Tq

To = T q /2
To = T q /2

Figure 7.1

7.3.5 Von Mises interaction check
2
Basic requirement: bx 2 + 3 py

2 2
249 + 3 23.6 = 252 N/mm2 < 275 N/mm2

Note that this is very slightly conservative because it uses the maximum shear stress
due to the shear force, which is not coexistent with the maximum bending stresses.
The shear stresses from the shear force could be calculated with sufficient accuracy by
using:

Fv
b =
Av

where Fv and Av are as defined in BS 5950-1:2000[1] clause 4.2.3.

7.4 Deflections

This material is copyright - all rights reserved. Reproduced for IHS Technical Indexes Ltd under licence from The Steel Construction Institute on 15/8/2005
It is common for deflection to govern the design of beams subject to torsion.

The twist along the member is given by:

d
= dz
Licensed copy:dewhurst, Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners, 13/07/2006, Uncontrolled Copy, SCI

dz

d T
=
dz GJ

For simplicity, the SLS torque may be calculated as:

TSLS = TULS/1.5
TULS = To = 3.75 kNm (See Section 7.3.1)
TSLS = 3.75/1.5 2.5 kNm
E
G= 79 , 000 N/mm2
2 (1 + v )

To buy a hardcopy version of this document call 01344 872775 or go to http://shop.steelbiz.org/

6
d 2.5 10 7
= = 6.3 10 radians/mm
3 4
dz 79 10 5020 10
d L 7 3
Twist = = 6.3 10 2000 = 1.26 10 radians . 0.07 degrees
dz 2

The large torsional stiffness of hollow sections results in small twists along the
member. However there may be additional twist from the connections and the
supporting structure.
