Microsoft Desktop Engine or MSDE is the standalone database provided with the Engineers
Desktop R2003.14 release. MSDE is a new technology that provides local data storage compati-
ble with Microsoft SQL Server 2000. It is designed and optimized for use on smaller computer
systems, such as a single-user computer or a small workgroup server.
Microsofts utility for installing MSDE is included within the Landmark Engineers Desktop
2003.14 install program. The behavior of the MSDE install on a PC is different if the PC already
has Microsoft SQL Server Client installed or SQL Server itself. Landmark has no control over
this MSDE install behavior, as these are Microsofts own installation tools.
Complete documentation of this behavior and recommended installation procedures for the three
different installations found in R2003.14 are provided in Landmarks EDM_Install.pdf,
EDT_Drilling_Install.pdf, and EDT_PE_Install.pdf. These instructions enable a client to success-
fully install Engineers Desktop and MSDE without affecting existing SQL Server Client applica-
tions. It is important that clients using Microsoft SQL Server Client or SQL Server review the
installation notes thoroughly before attempting to install Engineers Desktop 2003.14.
The Engineers Desktop 2003.14 Release includes the following applications and tools:
Acrobat Reader is needed to view the release notes and other documentation in *.PDF format. If
you already have this version of the Reader installed, you do not need to

EDM Database
EDM (Engineers Data Model) is Landmarks newest integrated database product. This release
of Engineers Desktop 2003.14 enables the migration of legacy data from COMPASS,
WELLPLAN, DIMS, TOWcs, and ARIES applications into the new common database.
CasingSeat and StressCheck can directly import legacy data files. Common data from each
legacy database can be merged into one set of shared business objects, preventing future
duplication of information.
The EDM database allows for centralization of Drilling application data sets and Production &
Economics application data sets, and enables naturally integrated engineering workflows. For
this release, integrated workflows are available for Drilling applications, Production &
Economics applications, and l cross-domain workflows between the Production and Drilling
applications.
The EDM Administration Utility is used to configure and implement database settings from a
single location for all the applications. This prevents future duplication of information.
The following operations can be performed using the EDM Administration Utility:
Create and customize EDM Output Reports (you must purchase Crystal Reports 9 to enable
this), System Settings, and Unit Management Sets
Create and customize OpenWells Data Entry Forms, Preview Panes, Shortcut Bars, OpenWells
Carry Overs and Status Colors
Configure EDM Security
Import and Export source files and EDM Administration Utility configurations
Generate EDM Schema for output reports
Use the EDM MSDE Administration Utility to perform the following functions:
Install MSDE (Microsoft Desktop Engine) if it is not present on the local machine
Create a blank copy of the EDM database
Attach an EDM database file to MSDE
Create two default users for new MSDE databases:
username: EDM, password: landmark (Default application user)
Please refer to the EDT Drilling Migration Guide for instructions on using the Drilling Data
Migration Toolkit.
EDM provides support for Production and Economics applications on a shared data model.
Production and Economics data can be migrated from a 2003.4.2.0 AFS Database, a standalone
2003.41 ARIES Database, or a standalone TOW Database using a variety of tools and
executables. Please refer to the EDT Production and Economics Database & Migration Guide
(EDT_PE_Database_&_Migration.pdf) for more information.
Unit Converter
Use the Unit Converter application to convert a data value from one unit system to an
equivalent unit system based on unit types (categories) defined in the database.
This application is used to view, save, and send Output Reports created with the EDM
Administration Utility and available to the OpenWells and COMPASS applications. Landmark
plans to implement this Report Manager in other EDM applications in future releases.
The EDM Services Utility is used to configure encryption, Field Office Data Transfer database
connection information, sender and receiver information (email addresses, monitored
directories, email servers, network login information, login information); to configure the
SAM (Simultaneous Activity Monitor) server (host name, port number, server name and log
file); and to configure database connection information for the EDM Publishing Service
application. All data is compressed when sending.
EDM-OpenWorks Link is a tool that enables you to map wells in the selected EDM database
to projects in the selected OpenWorks database. This association between databases is called
mapping. After a well is mapped to a project in OpenWorks, you can use the Engineer's Link
application to transfer data from the EDM database to OpenWorks.
For this release of EDM-OpenWorks Link, the mapping is enabled in one direction only: EDM
to OpenWorks.
The EDM Publishing Service is a application that enables automated or manual generation of
OpenWells Reports in printed (hard copy) or electronic (.PDF) format.
The EDM Publishing Service Controller runs in the Windows System Tray, which gives quick
access to the EDM Publishing Service application and Publishing Service Status.
The EDM Services Controller runs in the Windows System Tray and enables EDM Services to
be started, stopped, and restarted. The following Services are managed by the EDM Services
Controller: LGC EDM Data Receiver (Email), LGC EDM Data Receiver (File System), LGC
EDM Simultaneous Activity Monitor, and LGC EDM Publishing.

Choosing Applications for Installation
If you do not wish to install one or more of the P & E applications, select the
desired applications from the tree structure by clicking in the appropriate box.
Desktop Navigator
The Desktop Navigator allows you to access the entire Engineers Desktop suite of applications
from a single Graphical User Interface (GUI).
ARIES
ARIES International
ARIES International is a new solution that extends the widelyused ARIES economic
application. this tool empowers companies to evaluate complex fiscal regimes anywhere in the
world and consolidate the results. It replaces multiple evaluation tools with one, and retains the
familiar ARIES workflows, rollup strengths, and decline curve analysis. The results flow
seamless into the reserves management and the portfolio management system.
By supporting various levels of user expertise ARIES International satisfies the need for both
rapid model customization and consistent, secure deployment of models for company users.
Company experts can use the fully customizable modeling engine to create the exact
calculations they need for their contracts, and publish these models for the nonexperts within
the company to use in day to day evaluations. Intermediate PSC Super Template to quickly
assemble needed combinations of fiscal terms. In all cases, the expandable Fiscal Function
Library saves time and increases accuracy.
ARIES RMS
ARIES RMS (Reserves Management System) tracks your reserve changes on a property basis.
Using RMS, you can define several booking proposals using economic and/or volumetric
calculations. After making your proposals, you can compare them to each other and to the
previous booked reserves prior to selecting one of the proposals for booking. Once you select
a proposal, you can either book your properties separately, or use the Mass Booking function
to book a group of properties.
When you book reserves you are assigning specific remaining reserves to a property at a
specific point in time. Although you may run economics on a property several times a year, you
usually book reserves only annually or semi-annually. When you perform the booking
procedure, RMS stores the reserves and date in the RMSRESERVES table.
DSS
DSS (Dynamic Surveillance System) helps production and reservoir engineers add reserves
and increase profitability. The tool provides a powerful, easy-to-use graphical interface to
evaluate a variety of data. DSS lets you search for anomalous reservoir behavior using dynamic
bubble, pie and contour mapping. Workover and stimulation opportunities are identified easily
by monitoring well production curves and failures. Completion and structural relationships
between wells can be compared by displaying wellbore, log and zone data in a cross section.
The powerful grouping, normalizing and decline features of DSS enable you to determine
which completion or drilling technique is most effective.
DSS allows you to view surface, bottomhole, or even surveyed well locations with only a few
mouse clicks. You can create relevant maps and select a well to display its historical production
curve, while looking for inter-well communication from a recently drilled producer. Your data
are always readily available to analyze cause-and-effect situations within the field. Such
accurate and timely production data are invaluable in making correct economic and
engineering decisions, and in complying with state and federal accounting requirements and
reporting regulations.
TOW/cs
TOW/cs provides a complete production data management system. The TOW/cs software
application offers functions for setting up facilities, as well as capturing, managing, graphing,
and optimizing production data. There is also builtin reporting functionality.
TOW/cs stores data on a monthly basis, providing corporate access to an active production
history repository. Because everything is conveniently located in one place, you no longer need
to move data to evaluate reserves and economics. The system handles data communication
between field sites and central corporate databases, allowing field and office to be
synchronized like never beforeeveryone sees information in the same format.
Installation
The Engineers Desktop software is delivered on multiple CD-ROMs, Volumes 5, 6, and 15. You
can install all of the Engineers Desktop applications by referencing the individual Installation
Guides:
EDM Installation Guide, volume 5
EDT Drilling Installation Guide, volume 6
EDT Production & Economics Installation Guide, volume 15
Once you have completed the individual installations, the guides will be saved to your hard drive
under the documentation folder (c:\Landmark\EDT_2003.14\Documentation).
Remember to reboot your computer before attempting to use the Engineers Desktop. If you run
into problems, please refer to the Installation Troubleshooting section of the Corresponding
Installation Guide.
Licensing
For Engineers Desktop R2003.14, all PC and UNIX products including the Engineers Desktop
applications support use of FLEXlm licensing, which is the only licensing mechanism sup-
ported by Landmark. FLEXlm licensing has been supported with past releases, so many clients
will already be using this licensing mechanism. FLEXlm licensing is available for networked
application and standalone application use. FLEXlm standalone licensing may be used in con-
junction with a network card or through a FLEXlm dongle (bitlock) where no PC network identi-
fication is possible.
Previous versions of the Drilling applications and the Production & Economics applications sup-
ported use of a proprietary Landmark licensing mechanism called Netsecure for networks. Addi-
tionally, Sentinel bitlocks attached to a PCs parallel port could be used for licensing of standalone
installs, Crypkey licensing was also supported for standalone installs. Use of Netsecure, Sentinel
bitlocks and Crypkey has been discontinued by Landmark and is not supported for use with
Release2003 products.
The EDM R2003.14 applications require that an EDM license feature be available from the cus-
tomer's licensing server in order for the Engineer's Desktop applications to run. The EDM license
is handled as a Group Checkout for each application user on a particular PC. Only one EDM
license is checked out for all Engineer's Desktop applications being run by a user on a single
machine. Therefore, clients will need to acquire a set of EDM licenses based on their expected
concurrent user level. Please contact your local Landmark representative for EDM licensing.
Existing EDM and application licenses are valid for customers who have installed and run ver-
sions of EDM 2003.5 and later.
If you have:
2003.11 installedyour licenses are all valid for 2003.14.
2003.5 installedyou must obtain a new EDM license
W2000 installedyou must re-license your applications and obtain an EDM license.
To re-license, customers must contact their local Landmark representative. Refer to the LAM
2003.0-Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the \Prod-
ucts\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 5, for details.
IMPORTANT! If you have a version of LAM server older than 7.2e (Release 2003.0 and later), you
must uninstall it before installing the LAM 2003 server.
Failure to uninstall all previous versions of LAM Server before installing LAM Server 2003 will result in a
duplicate FLEXlm service that replicates itself until it crashes Windows.
The procedures for uninstalling LAM server are detailed in the section LAM Server - Uninstallation Notes in
the LAM 2003.0Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the Products\EDT\Install\LAM
folder on CD 5. Products that were licensed under the older server will still work with the new LAM server.
IMPORTANT! If you are using a FLEXlm dongle (bitlock), you must install FLEXlm 7.2i on the
standalone or client machine.
1. Go to your installed \LAM\bin folder, and run flexid.exe to install the bitlock drivers.
2. To request a bitlock license, run \LAM\bin\lmtools.exe. Select System Settings tab; provide the value you see
in the FLEXID9 field.

Integrated Workflows
The Engineers Desktop 2003.14 release provides a comprehensive set of workflows that
demonstrate to the user the full benefit of deploying Drilling, Production, and Economics
tools on a single data platform. After installation, you can view these workflows by select-
ing Workflows from your EDT.chm online help file.
Login Dialog
Engineers Desktop (EDT) applications are run against a database, SQL Server, MSDE, or Oracle
Enterprise. Use of a database requires that the user log into the application so that database
permissions and security levels may be determined. All EDT applications share the same common
login dialog. Use of the common EDM Data Services layer means that a user need only login into
a EDT application once. EDT applications that are subsequently launched will automatically use
the initial login information, so the user does not need to re-login for each application.
Property Dialogs
Accessible from the right-click menu, each hierarchical node (level) displayed in the Well Explorer
has its own Properties dialog, which is used to create new node objects or modify existing objects.
The contents of the Properties dialogs can vary between applications. Information present is
configured for each application, so the data displayed is only that which is relevant for the currently
open application.
Locking Support
Property dialogs support locking of data levels, which is a simple toggle feature used to prevent
accidental updates/changes to data. Locked levels signify to other users that the information
should not be changed. Used in conjunction with Data Passwords entered at the Company level,
the locking feature can be used to further protect data from unplanned changes or deletions.
You can lock the Company properties only, or individually lock other data levels (Project, Site,
Well, Wellbore, Design, Case, etc.) as well.
Data Auditing
EDM provides automated auditing support for all data sets in the database. EDM automatically
logs the User name, Application name, and Date/Time when each object is created and last
updated. Users can provide additional documentation describing changes to the data in the
available Notes field.
The Unit System Editor is available to all EDM applications in the Tools menu (Tools > Unit
System). A major component of the EDM Unit Management System (UMS), the Unit System
Editor enables users to create or change selection of their active display unit sets. EDM ships with
two system unit setsAPI and SIwhich cannot be edited. However, users can make copies of
these unit sets to create their own custom unit sets which may be changed. Unit sets are stored in
the database and are therefore available to all users. You can also import and export unit systems
(you cant use reserved characters).
The EDM database supports storage of data to a consistent storage unit set. With the Engineers
Desktop release, this storage unit set is fixed to store data to API units.
A significant component of the Engineers Desktop release is support for .XML EDM data transfer
files that enable users to export and import EDM data at different levels of the EDM data hierarchy
to facilitate movement of data between EDM databases. Part of the Data Services layer, the Data
Transfer Export generates a .XML file which may be copied, emailed, or sent to other EDM sites
where that information may be imported. This .XML file format supports inclusion of Blob data
such as logo images stored within EDM.
When doing an XML import into a database, Landmark strongly recommends that you close any
open data sets in the application unless you know they are not related to the contents of the
imported data transfer file; the transfer process will not update open data items. Changes made by
the import process will not be visible in open items until these items are closed and re-opened or
refreshed.
Please refer to the EDM Release Notes for more information on the EDM
Common Interface Components for Drilling & Completions applications.
The EDT Production & Economics Global Release Notes document (this document) lists all
enhancements, fixed defects, and known issues for the Engineers Desktop, Desktop Navigator,
ARIES, DSS, and TOW/cs.
Engineers Desktop
NT Authentication
The NT Authentication is a new feature available in this Production and Economics 2003.14
release. This feature allows you to use Windows NT user names, passwords and domains to
control the security logins of your application. This centralizes your security profiles within the
Windows NT framework (rather than using the internal application framework).
ARIES
Project Manager
A new dedicated method is now available to import production data from DrillingInfo.
ARIES automatically refreshes the reports list names after you save a new report.
The Pick list Counter displays both a value for Marked Properties and the Marked Properties
and Sums for the current item.
Economics Module
ARIES will perform both economic limit and payout calculations at a Summary Group level.
The members of the group are automatically rerun using these calculated dates.
ARIES will generate up to 128 reporting time frames. This allows for more detail
(i.e.; budgeting). This new functionality will change the structure of the SUM files, so the user
will not be able to mix the new files with the old files when performing a summary run.
New functionality populates the output array and sum files with up to 400 streams of results.
New ARIES functionality features a pop up spreadsheet data entry method where the user
can list, copy, or paste production forecasts.
Included in the ARIES application, is a START date option for a variable delay period (number
of months) to automatically shift the beginning point forward or backward. A user can also
combine this new feature with the ENDDATE to model a delay in starting workovers.
There is no limitation on the number of investment lines that can contain the RISK X
procedure.
When using the hyp/exp switchover procedure in the ARIES economics package, the decline
curve forecasting matches the MultiGraph results.
ARIES now offers the ability to enter blank lines within the economic title section so that the
user may tailor the appearance.
ARIES now features an option (Delete Output Before Run) you can use to automatically delete
the economic output file at the start of each run. This option is located in the Miscellaneous
area of the Output tab on the Economic Run Settings dialog.
MultiGraph Module
Trend Alignment
ARIES permits up to 500 wells to be used in the Trend alignment analysis method.
MultiGraph can use the start date from the economic data lines that contain the lookup entry:
@M.STARTDATE.
Landscape mode is the new default plot orientation for ARIES. Use the Graph Preferences
dialog box to set the orientation to Landscape or Portrait.
Tab functionality has been added to the ARIES Plot Title line dialogue text to enable the user
with better formatting capabilities. Use the backslash t (\ t) command to set the tab stop, as the
actual tab button on your key board has been designed to move you to the next dialogue box.
Status Bar
For improved usability, the SHOW ID box on the multi-graph status bar has been enlarged.
ARIES International
This is the initial release of ARIES International, please look for subsequent releases for new
enhancements and functionalities.
Several enhancements have been added to the 2003.14 Release of ARIES RMS. These
enhancements include improved interim production adjustment methods and a second booking
approval level. The second booking approval level also includes a freeze procedure for
reserves and revision values, which will help the user community with their close outs at year
end.

There is not an NT user setup within these applications. They connect to any ODBC data
source. The database administrator configures NT Authentication within the applicable
database setup.
Map Charts
The map chart functionality supports the ability to plot eight variables as well as x y plots.
Tools Menu
Use the Back Allocation Option to calculate data from child entities. The allocation will be
calculated using source value splits from the parent entity.
Declines
The Auto Cum feature has been removed and now allows the user to forecast other variables
in the decline chart.
A new field has been added to this dialog box and automates the decline rate changeover from
Use the Auto Refresh Interval field to set the time interval for the automatically refresh your
workbooks.
New development has been applied to the ID Cross Reference and extends the functionality to
cover areas not covered by the calculation engine.
Graphs
Use the Deep Copy option, located on the Workbooks rightclick menu, to create a full copy
of the workbook, worksheet, and subsequent charts thus giving yourself the ability to create
new graphs.
Grids
Users may now copy the grid header to the clipboard after selecting the header.
Functions
This release of DSS now offers the @FORMAT, @NOW, and @TODAY functionality.
@FORMAT. Gives the user more control over the presentation of data in reports and
posted values.
@NOW. Returns the system date with and without a time stamp.
Note: @NOW and @TODAY functions are useful for surveillance calculations
requiring comparisons with an actual date.
OpenWire Production
The database administrator uses the EDM Administrator Utility to create NT users and grant
NT user rights. The Desktop Navigator Login dialog has an Edit check box. When the user
marks the Edit check box, the Edit Connection dialog displays.
On the Connection tab, there is a Trusted Connection check box. Checking this box and
clicking OK automatically enters the current Windows login User ID in the disabled Username
field on the login dialog.
TOW/cs
Common Login
A Common Login has been developed for this 2003.14 release. Once you have logged into an
application, any subsequent application you open, whether as a Desktop Navigator snapin or
outside the Desktop, will not require input in the login or password field.
Please note, the Job Scheduler will not use the shared memory established
by the registry table that is accessed to create the common login
functionality.
NT Authentication
NT Authentication can be used to set up external users. The TOW/cs Login screen features a
Use Windows Authentication checkbox. If your company decides to use NT Authentication,
and your database administrator has set the end user up as an NT user (or external user), the
end user simply checks this box and the end users external User ID automatically enters in the
User ID field.
Creating an NT User
To create an NT User, the database administrator must first set up the NT User outside of
TOW/cs using the database tools that are provided by the database vendor (this cannot be done
through the TOW/cs Utilities module).
After the NT User is set up within the database, the TOW/cs administrator can open the
TOW/cs Utilities module and access the User Accounts dialog by selecting Tools > User
Accounts from the main menu. There, the administrator will see a column labeled NT User. In
this column, a checked box appears on the row next to any user that is an NT User (external
user). If the user was setup using the Utilities application, then he is an internal user and the

Known Problems
The Engineers Desktop 2003.14 has been a significant development effort intended to realize the
strategy of supplying integrated applications to the client that enable engineering workflows. For
each product, changing the application to support a new data model was a significant challenge.
Engineers Desktop 2003.14 is being released with some outstanding issues that are known, but not
thought to prevent users from achieving the efficiency gains provided by these applications. The
following list of issues enables clients to compare observed application behavior against issues
known to Landmark at the time of release. These issues will be addressed in future releases of EDM
together with any additional issues reported by clients.
For our international clients, it is important to change your regional settings so that our applica-
tions accurately display and calculate the data entry volumes, commas, and decimal separators.
Regional Settings:
In most Latin America countries, the decimal symbol is comma (,) and the digit group symbol is
period (.) (ex. 12.500,50). TOW/cs does not handle this setting. Because of this, when language is
set to Spanish (ex. Spanish (Venezuela)), the Decimal Symbol has to be changed to period (.) and
Digit Group Symbol to comma (,). If the settings are not changed, some of the fields calculated by
TOW/cs are incorrect.
2. On the Regional Options tab, click the drop down menu arrow and scroll the menu and
highlight your language/country.
3. Click OK.
5. Change the Decimal symbol to a period (.) and the Digit grouping symbol to a comma (,).
6. Click OK.
TOW/cs does not recognize decimal places if the decimal symbol is a comma and the digit group
symbol is a period at the Oracle client level.
Or
