Cortes Island Elementary Junior has a population of 55 students, 1 Principal, 1 Administrative Assistant, 3
Teachers, 1 EA, 1 Learning Assistant/Councilor/Librarian, 1 Aboriginal Support Worker, 1 Custodian, 1 Bus
Driver/Maintenance, and 1 Student Supervisor for a total of 11 staff members.

Cortes Island is composed of a predominately close knit community with a population of approximately 1050
residents. Many community members commonly visit Cortes Elementary with the purpose of volunteering for
school programs, events, or functions, or to participate in after school activities designed to accommodate a
range of ages. Due to the relatively small size of the island (130km2), interactions with residents is generally a
common occurrence.

The class is made up of 22 students, ranging from grades 6-9. Due to the specific age range within the class, the
students intellectual, physical, and emotional development are strikingly diverse, as are their interests and skills.

There are four students with designations, all of whom have I.E.P.s:

-A grade six student is designated category R, (behavioral)

-A grade seven student is designated category G (ASD)
-A grade seven student is designated category Q (learning disabilityreading and Math)
-A grade nine student is designated category Q (learning disabilityreading and spelling)

There are also two students whom have recently joined the class, notably one of which requires
accommodations and adaptations in several subject areas.

Students are generally supportive of each other; however, there has been challenges with some of the new
students either adapting to social norms or finding comfort within their own individuality. One student in
particular appears to be ostracized by several other students. The situation appears to be improving.

Lucas has successfully fulfilled the eight BC Teachers Council Standards. Lucas has a strong professional presence in
the classroom. He is well organized, prepared and focused. His planning and his lessons are purposeful, clear and
sequenced. He has established a solid relationship with the class. The students respond very positively to his teaching.

Lucas is open to feedback and is able to adapt his lessons when the situation demands it. He is flexible, caring,
empathetic and possesses a good sense of humour. He has fine communication skills. Lucas has effective classroom
management skills as well. He is enthusiastic, supportive and respectful. Lucas has a solid work ethic. The learning
environment in his class is definitely positive and synergetic. He is very knowledgeable in the content areas although he
feels that math in particular can get better. He possesses exceptional technology skills. Lucas has a relaxed demeanor
about him, uses humour appropriately and is always encouraging to the students in his care.

Lucas reflections are full of details of how the delivery of a lesson went and how it might go better in future. He is
insightful, detailed and thorough and is always open to feedback. He is an active learner himself and thus provides a
super model to the students in his care.

Lucas is fully aware of what makes an effective classroom, a positive learning situation and the reasons that parents and
students like to attend and contribute to their school. Lucas developed a capable approach in managing and planning a
multi-grade level setting. He involves himself in school life by supporting and contributing to school and classroom
activities as well as leading some of those same activities. He believes in lifelong learning and as such is ready to commit
totally to his professions both in growth and practice.

Lucas completed an outstanding practicum.

Lucas Anderson has successfully met the outcomes for the Vancouver Island University Teacher Education
