Gallery Hours during the exhibition:
Wed - Sat, 12 - 6

Curator's Office is covering the gallery walls with photography & photo-based work to
help out Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontieres. Our goal is to raise at
least $ 5,000, which could pay for an emergency health kit to care for 10,000 displaced
people for three months. Together, we and art can make an important difference.
Have we forgotten Haiti so quickly? It's hurricane season, and post-earthquake
medical need is becoming critical there once again.

Toronto

We are aware of the extreme and constant need in the world with crises affecting different parts of the globe on a weekly basis.
One stellar charity, Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is an international medical humanitarian
organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. Today, MSF provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people
whose survival is threatened by violence, negligence, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition,
exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF
reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, to challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and
to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols. In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize. For further
information or to donate directly, go to Donate Directly to MSF.

Washington area and beyond.

The season begins on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day at the U.S. Navy Memorial, located at 701

THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS:

Tibet's Struggle for Freedom

A film by Tenzing Sonam and Ritu Sarin

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS was recently at the center of a controversy at the Palm Springs
International Film Festival, where screenings of two Chinese feature films were pulled by the
Chinese government in protest of the festival's exhibition of THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS.
Directed by Tibetan filmmaker Tenzing Sonam and his partner, Ritu Sarin, the film focuses upon the
March 2008 demonstrations against Chinese rule, the largest ever since the 1959 take-over of Tibet,
and the split among Tibetans themselves regarding the most effective approach to Chinese
intransigence. The Dalai Lama, living in exile in Northern India, is interviewed extensively during
this turbulent period and he explicates his "Middle Way Approach," giving up a goal for an
independent Tibet in exchange for cultural and social autonomy. A younger generation of Tibetans
who are devoted to the Dalai Lama, but who nonetheless feel his solution is ineffective, appear in
the film, detailing their more militant position. (English: 73 minutes)

"Essential viewing for anyone who cares about the fate of the mountain region and the legacy of the
Dalai Lama... The film is notable for its focus on an extraordinary year in Tibet's history and on
Tibetans themselves - historians, writers, activists, all eloquent, impassioned and living in exile." -
Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

All aboard! NetParty invites you to
"board the current and embark on a
tantalizing journey that is bound to
stimulate all of your senses" at this
Dupont Circle hotspot.
(TheScene.com).

NetParty made its DC debut in April as more

than 300 young professionals joined us at
Shadow Room. On Wednesday, July 14, you
are cordially invited to another evening
"combining business networking and social fun"
(Forbes "Best of the Web") and to find out why
Cosmo called us "One of the Top New Ways to
Meet" and Las Vegas Weekly dubbed us "the
mother lode, the very seat of business/social
networking."

Our evening will be one of an aquatic nature, as we "ascend the grand

floating staircase" (The Washington Post) and take over The 2nd Floor
and The Deck at Current. That's "where the action is," according to The
Washington Post, who made Current an Editor's Pick and confirmed that
for Current, it's "full speed ahead."

Our guests will enjoy:

 Happy Hour Drink Specials (to be announced)

 Music played at a low volume to facilitate successful business
networking during our networking cocktail hours (6 pm - 8 pm)
 DJ spinning great music and creating a more social atmosphere after
8 pm while still allowing for continued conversation and interaction
 The chance to be part of a networking event unlike other boring
business card exchanges and to meet young professionals like you
for both business contacts and friendships.

Conceived as "an ultra-futuristic luxury yacht," Current is "sleek and

sophisticated" (CityLiving.com) and "nautical touches abound: The ribs
overhead look like the below-decks of a cruise ship, and "portholes" in the
ceiling allow views between floors, though a constant wash of water keeps
the glass slightly opaque." (The Washington Post).

If you choose to set sail with us, we sadly cannot promise Naked Sushi.
But we can promise hundreds of young professionals and a chance to
make lasting connections for landlubbers and seafarers alike.

We look forward to seeing you!

Time spent with the Bedouins of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, suggested the theme of artist Anna
Kipervaser's July exhibit at the Jerusalem Fund Gallery. "the light thread . the dark thread"
refers to the Quran’s instruction about Ramadan, "You may eat and drink until the white
thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn." Cutting and
painting her wood panels to form the shapes of her paintings, the artist interprets "the place
where inbetweenness is everything, where opposites are indistinguishable, where they are
one."

Anna is also working with an international team to document the muezzins of Cairo through
a multi-media project entitled Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo, a documentary film,
audio archive, multi-media library and art installation project about the Muslim call to prayer
in Cairo.

Tatiana Suarez (b. 1983) is a Brooklyn-based Miami native. This emerging artist is an alumni of the University of Miami's
Graphic Design program, and also works as a freelance illustrator. Her charming style is distinctive -- first, the trademark
eyes that draw the viewer into a beautiful and surreal world. Suarez takes full advantage of the oil paint's ability to create
creamy, soft images on canvas. Rich with symbols that stem from her Brazilian and El Salvadorian heritage, subjects
appear as if they are under water, frozen in lovely stillness. The doe-eyed figures look childlike, but also exude sexual
overtones, ornamented with plants, insects and other unsettling accompaniments. Beauty is presented concurrently with
exotic -- even creepy -- creatures to create enchanted narratives.

Brother I'm Dying

Publisher's description: From the best-selling author of The Dew Breaker, a major work of nonfiction: a
powerfully moving family story that centers around the men closest to her heart—her father, Mira, and his older
brother, Joseph.

From the age of four, Edwidge Danticat came to think of her uncle Joseph, a charismatic pastor, as her “second
father,” when she was placed in his care after her parents left Haiti for a better life in America. Listening to his
sermons, sharing coconut-flavored ices on their walks through town, roaming through the house that held
together many members of a colorful extended family, Edwidge grew profoundly attached to Joseph. He was
the man who “knew all the verses for love.”

And so she experiences a jumble of emotions when, at twelve, she joins her parents in New York City. She is at
last reunited with her two youngest brothers, and with her mother and father, whom she has struggled to
remember. But she must also leave behind Joseph and the only home she’s ever known.

Edwidge tells of making a new life in a new country while fearing for the safety of those still in Haiti as the
political situation deteriorates. But Brother I’m Dying soon becomes a terrifying tale of good people caught up
in events beyond their control. Late in 2004, his life threatened by an angry mob, forced to flee his church, the
frail, eighty-one-year-old Joseph makes his way to Miami, where he thinks he will be safe. Instead, he is
detained by U.S. Customs, held by the Department of Homeland Security, brutally imprisoned, and dead within
days. It was a story that made headlines around the world. His brother, Mira, will soon join him in death, but not
before he holds hope in his arms: Edwidge’s firstborn, who will bear his name—and the family’s stories, both
joyous and tragic—into the next generation.

Told with tremendous feeling, this is a true-life epic on an intimate scale: a deeply affecting story of home and
family—of two men’s lives and deaths, and of a daughter’s great love for them both.

The book is available from Teaching for Change Bookstore at Busboys and Poets at 2021 14th Street NW (two
blocks from the Cardozo/U Street Metro. Contact: General Manager Don Allen (202) 387-POET

French singer Johnny Hallyday stars as a Parisian chef who travels to Hong Kong to avenge the death of his
daughter’s family in Johnnie To’s latest high-voltage noir thriller. When he joins forces with a gang of
underworld assassins (including To regulars Anthony Wong, Lam Suet, and Simon Yam), the bullets fly and
revelations about his daughter’s assailants—and his own mysterious past—come to light. Per Kirk Honeycutt of
The Hollywood Reporter, “Popcorn and art certainly can co-exist, as this movie amply demonstrates.” (Dir.,
Johnnie To; 2009; 108 min.; English, Cantonese, and French with English subtitles)

"Ip Man"

Friday, July 16, 7:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 18, 2:00 p.m.

Best known as Bruce Lee’s teacher, Ip Man is renowned as one of the world’s greatest kung fu masters. Part
historical epic, part kung fu extravaganza, this film focuses on the life of Ip Man, played by Donnie Yen, during
the Sino-Japanese War, when he went from a humble martial arts master to a tough partisan fighter who used
his skills to battle the Japanese invaders. Winner of the Best Picture and Best Action Choreography awards at
the Hong Kong Film Awards, Ip Man laces a fascinating true story with astonishing fight scenes to appeal to
kung-fu connoisseurs and neophytes alike. (Dir., Wilson Yip; 2008; 107 min.; Cantonese, Mandarin, and
Japanese with English subtitles)

Every artist has a definition of source; all little pools of the personal that seek to flow
towards a larger body; to somehow return to an undifferentiated unity from which the
familiar can resonate. Source can be one that creates; a maker, or that which supplies
information; a source code. Source can be a point at which substance springs into being or
the energy input point of a system. Nature as refuge from the artificial constructs of
civilization is always present as source. It is from a natural source that humanity has
diversified creating competition and inventing technologies that have brought with them
global problems of massive proportions.

Pat Goslee lives and works in Washington, DC. She received a BFA in graphic design from the
University of Georgia and an MFA in painting from Catholic University. She has served on the
Board of Directors for the Washington Arts Museum (WAM) and the DC Arts Center (DCAC), and
the Advisory Committee for International Arts & Artists' Hillyer Art Space. She has been a visiting
artist lecturer at local institutions including American University and the Corcoran Collage of Art
+ Design.

National Endowment for the Arts.

D. B. Stovall, a native Washingtonian, displays his vibrant large

format photographs of classically American landscapes in this series.
Saturated with color, these images reveal the nuanced design of mid-
century American storefront architecture, from Morgantown to North
Platte, Nebraska to Cheyenne; showcasing “things that seem
mundane or commonplace to others yet define our existence,” which
is how Stovall describes “American Vernacular.”

D.B. Stovall worked for almost 10 years as a professional

photographer after graduating from the Rochester Institute of
Technology in the mid-'70s, doing mostly industrial work and
graphic. After a nearly twenty year hiatus, Stovall returned to
photography after he was inspired by a cable television program on
historical Silver Spring. Advances in digital technology, software
and printing enabled him to transform his original photographs into
richly detailed prints.

He now resides in Richmond, VA and is an electrical engineer for a

private firm. His work has been shown at The Delaplaine Visual Arts
Center in Frederick, MD and at the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery in
Rockville, MD.

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.

Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

To all our partners in the DC region -

Thanks again for your support of StreetWise Partners' programs over the last 12 months. We are excited about further
developing and improving our Career Ventures program, as well as our Alumni workshops over the next year, to better help
motivated low-income individuals. Currently 77% of participants have a job, a promotion or pay-rise, or are enrolled in a
career advancing education program within 6 months of starting our Career Ventures program. We want to get this up to
100%!

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer „roles‟ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!

If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year’s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not have done it without you.
Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose to serve with us or on our behalf.

You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ Battle) that you were
interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. PLEASE read on about the process to
becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some general volunteer roles that may interest you.

ABOUT THE PROCESS:

In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application packet. This will include a
registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form (attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy of their photo ID.
Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find a listing of fingerprinting
agencies with which you can make an appointment to complete the card.

**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint check, though they MUST complete the
background investigation consent and permission form for minors and have each form signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to
include ALL required information including social security number and signature(s)**

ABOUT YOUR ROLE:

Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a potential volunteer role.
General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides, administrative aides, maintenance, beautification/repair,
events/fundraising, or even pro bono services based on your skills. BGCGW also offers summer programming at most locations.
Summer schedules often times include field trips, educational enrichment workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and more!

I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific Club is another great
way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have attached a listing of our Clubs for your review.
This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and contacts.

Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any colleagues/classmates that may be
interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope to see you again soon!!!

Americans for Tax Reform is accepting
applications for fall internships.

Applications are due July 16, 2010.

We believe in a system in which taxes are simpler, fairer, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today. The
government's power to control one’s life derives from its power to tax. We believe that power should be

StreetWise Partners

Established in 1997 by young corporate professionals on Wall Street, StreetWise Partners works to empower
motivated, low-income individuals to be able to achieve the job they want. Our unique model matches volunteer
mentors with motivated participants who work with them over 14 weeks to develop their employability skills,
including hard skills (computer training, resume creation) and soft skills (communication, professional etiquette,
networking). Together, we help economically distressed adults develop the job-search competence, the necessary
soft and hard skills, and the access to professional networks to secure sustainable and career-advancing
employment and be employable in the rapidly changing global economy.

BECOME A MENTOR

The next cycles will begin in March 2010 with options to mentor on Wednesday evenings (6:30-9:00pm, March 3rd
- June 9th) or on Saturday afternoons (11am-2pm, March 6th - June 12th). Both programs are held in downtown
Washington, D.C. If you are interested in being a mentor on one of these programs, you will need to complete an
application at www.streetwisepartners.org/application/volunteer. You are also invited to attend a volunteer
information session at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 10th, to find out more about the program. To RSVP for the
info session, please e-mail Lauren Libera at lauren@streetwisepartners.org.

ONE-TIME OPPORTUNITIES

- 1:1 COMPUTER INSTRUCTION. Work 1:1 on a laptop with a motivated job-seeker to help them develop basic
computer skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

- RESUME REVIEW. Spend time reviewing different mentees' resumes before meeting with them and providing
them with verbal feedback.

- MOCK INTERVIEWS. Conduct three mock interviews with our motivated, low-income mentees. Volunteers play
different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager, HR Manager – to give the mentees experience of different types of
interview. Volunteers then give mentees feedback about their performance and their resume.

- SPEED NETWORKING. Listen to mentees' 30 second elevator pitches and give them feedback on how to better
‘sell’ themselves.

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest need is for Savings
Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about taking money management classes,
savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience necessary, we train you.

We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during daytime hours, or who
speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the
email below and please pass on to your networks!

Thanks,
Emily Appel

You Can Change Lives,

One Return at a Time

This tax season you can be a part of a tremendous effort that brings over $9 million
into the homes of DC’s low-income working families each year.

Volunteer as a Savings Promoter or Tax Preparer with the

DC Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign
(www.dceitc.org)!

Our Success Depends On Volunteers Like You!

Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working family’s income by
more than $6,000.

This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills, and save for
future goals and needs.

Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to move up the
economic ladder!

*The Campaign's greatest need is for additional Savings Promoter volunteers.

No Professional Experience Needed

If you know how to complete a tax return, or have done your own taxes, you can volunteer as a tax preparer. All
preparers receive 12 hours of free training (on Saturdays and/or weekdays evenings) and IRS certification in
January.

Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive training to enable
you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes and credit counseling, and even open
direct deposit accounts!

Opportunities for Everyone

In addition to tax preparers, we need volunteer interpreters and Savings Promoter
volunteers to educate clients about savings products and free financial resources.

Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.

Flexible Hours & Locations

Volunteer for 3-4 hours a week from January 30 through mid April at one of 12 sites throughout the DC area. Most
sites are open on evenings and/or weekends.
