1. Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard
and competencies the artifact represents.

Data collected was from a graduate class assignment on human growth and learning. The artifact
provided represents leadership principles and theories, with a focus on preventive and
intervention strategies to promote positive change. It actively examines barriers to student
learning and utilizes reliable data to guide decision making and sound practices in order to help
close achievement gaps.

2. What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies
which fall under this standard.

The artifact presented illustrates how research can guide and be used to make systemic change
within the school setting. Students that struggle with self-regulation may benefit from specialized
instruction and curriculum to learn positive coping skills. Throughout the paper I analyzed a
developmental issue among school age students and effectively used data driven research to
provide solutions. Through research, I discussed strategies to help students cope with anger at
specific developmental stages. The tools and materials were reliable so I could ensure their
effectiveness for the chosen population group. This artifact effectively shows my ability to
analyze a problem and use research to guide decision making and practices. I successfully used
theoretical perspectives as a framework to help identify and apply curriculum that is research
based and effective.

3. What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your
personal goal and your growth as a professional school counselor?

The artifact reflects the way I will approach my goals as well as potential methods I will utilize
to better understand and tackle the need of my students. My goal is to ensure that every program
implemented within my comprehensive counseling program is data driven and reliable to, as
much as possible, ensure to the success of my students. The use of action research will allow me
to effectively convey programming needs that meet both the students needs and the program
mission. This kind of communication along with the use of school data will help engage
professional participation towards the same common goal. As a result, the use of action research
will allow school officials to evaluate program effectiveness and use data for accountability and
action.

4. What are your plans for additional growth and improvement in this area?

My plan for additional growth is to continue to collect data and understand the needs of my
students. Also, I want to make the research and data collection process a more collaborative
effort to help improve engagement and accountability. Our comprehensive counseling program
needs a more professional culture that is committed to understanding the quality of our programs
with a common goal to regularly evaluate and improve.
