Standard #11: Learning Theory


1. Identify and consult with teachers about how to create a positive learning
environment utilizing such factors as effective classroom management strategies,
building a sense of community in the classroom, and cooperative learning
experiences.
2. Identify and consult with teachers regarding teaching strategies designed to
motivate students using small group learning activities, student mentoring
programs, and shared decision-making opportunities.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent development and identify
developmentally appropriate teaching and learning strategies.

1. Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the
standard and competency the artifact represents?

The artifact was obtained from a graduate class that focuses on human growth and
learning. It touches on identifying barriers to student learning, closing the achievement
gap, collaborating with stakeholders, and developmental theories related to learning.

2. What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the
competencies which fall under this standard?

The artifact shows one of my weaknesses to actively explore approaches and strategies
that school personnel could have utilized to help students cope with their disorders,
behavior, and life circumstances. The artifact focuses too much on the student behaviors
and his inability to function in a classroom setting. Obtaining feedback from teachers and
parents in order to identify strategies that worked would have provided a foundation to
provide the student with an educational plan that also illustrates the student's strengths. I
feel I did a great job on identifying how the students environment affected his
development from a theoretical perspective, but failed to identify any strategies that were
implemented in the classroom to help create successful outcomes. I could have better
explored a developmental framework with a focus on creating positive change for the
students academic success.

3. What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your
personal goals and your growth as a professional school counselor?
This project showed that we as counselors must look at the student as a whole, while
considering their home environment and upbringing in order to understand a students
behaviors and motivations. There may be cases where unmet mental health needs can
cause the student to exhibit unwanted behaviors. I learned that we must examine how a
student is affected in a developmental context. Due to ever-changing student needs,
school counselors have an important role in meeting our students mental health needs.
My efforts will also focus on establishing collaborative efforts with a mutual goal to meet
these students needs.

4. What are your plans for additional growth and improvement in this area?

My plans for additional growth include actively researching and participating in


educational workshops that focus on improving the way I analyze and approach learning.
This may consist of connecting with our local area education agency to uncover
opportunities that will enhance my own professional skills, so I can become familiar with
the current evidence-based materials and strategies in place to improve student learning.
In addition, I will closely collaborate with specialized teachers and ask them questions
concerning classroom instruction, to establish a long-term mentorship.
