Final Refection on Myself, My Portfolio, and the Buena Vista

University School Counseling Program

Davon Campbell

Spring 2017

Reflection on Myself
My journey to this point in my life has been nothing less than an

adventure. I have come a long way from a student who used to be in special

education to one graduating from college with my masters degree. I couldnt

have got to this point without my support team that has done nothing but

encourage and support me along the way. Reflecting over the course of years

I have matured, learned, failed, and overcome many obstacles. I had to

juggle multiple jobs to support myself and family. I have sacrificed even

when it wasnt in my best interest to give a helping hand. Regardless of my

situation, race, or environment, failure was never an option.

I must thank my mentors and past teachers for helping me develop a

mindset to focus on my talents and abilities to overcome and achieve my

goals through perseverance, preparation, and support. Being a first-

generation student, I never imagined making it this far in my educational

career. I always knew that to succeed, change, persistence and dedication

were a must to break through the cycle of generational dysfunction that

existed within my family. Somehow, I managed to take my own path in life

while still giving back to my community, traveling aboard, and getting

awarded for my educational accomplishment. My education and support

team have been a driving force for a hopeful student like myself to pursue

and accomplish my dreams.

Reflection on Portfolio
The graduate portfolio reflected my personal growth, experiences, and

challenges on my journey to becoming a school counselor. Thus, I have come

to appreciate the rigorousness, my efforts, and experiences to learn more

about myself and the counseling profession. The portfolio helped me

illustrate the requirements and my dream of becoming a school counselor

through my work, research, and counseling experiences. It reflected a story

within a unique cohort were we all got the chance to learn about one

another, listen, and actively help one another to become better helpers. It

pushed me to understand the full role and responsibility of becoming a

counselor and a change maker within schools for all students. All the artifacts

and experiences have been such a critical part of my education that helped

me answer questions and start my career as a professional counselor.

Reflection of Buena Vista School Counseling Program

Im thankful for Buena Vista University and their staff for accepting me

and giving me an opportunity of a lifetime. The counseling program has

been nothing more than a dynamic and inclusive place where I was

encouraged to freely express myself and learn from others whose

backgrounds were completely different from mine. I was challenged to not

only to think critically but to act in a culturally appropriate manner. The

program provided me with the experiences necessary to walk in the shoes of

a counselor, understand the needs of students, education gaps, and issues

surrounding schools and the counseling profession.
