Q1 This was new course this year. Some

activities and units may have worked, and
others may have been big flops. After T2, I
cut something the first class thought didn't
work well, but that means I replaced it with
new material, so I still need feedback. Next
year, when the class runs again, what are
some activities and units you would
recommend doing again? What was not as
effective or engaging for you and you would
not recommend doing?

1 I thought that there was a really good balance between the human health material and the disease material. We had a 6/6/2016 12:56 PM
good amount of standard "learning" activities for each unit we had and then had a fun and interesting final project for
each one that allowed us to go beyond what we had learned and research something that was interesting to us
individually. I definitely recommend redoing the final research project, as this has allowed us to focus on something we
are passionate about learning and teaching and is great group work and teaching experience. One thing I would
suggest focusing your improvement efforts on is the nutritional study. It felt a little rushed and like we didn't put as
much time or effort into it as would have been more beneficial. I would also suggest trying to test a more particular
thing, such as removing beef from the diet or eating a lot more probiotics so that people don't have to revamp their
entire diet. Perhaps this would allow the study to go on for longer.

2 everything but the nutrition study it felt rushed and the experiment caused a lot of problems and did provide anything 6/6/2016 12:53 PM
useful for the class. I just seemed to need either more time or to not do it.

3 I can't think of anything to get ride of, maybe add a dissection of some animal. 6/6/2016 12:53 PM

4 I really enjoyed everything we did! It felt like the mini section on autoimmune diseases was an after thought and could 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
have just stayed a footnote on the immune system unit. We never really got that in depth on it and yet managed to
spend what felt like a lot of time on it.

5 I think you should do the immune system unit and activities again, as it was very interesting and fun. Particularly the 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
ELISA testing. I also thought looking at the incorrect health information was really interesting. I think everything
worked for me.

6 I enjoyed learning all about the immune system as well as gut bacteria. I think you should do the ELISA lab again as 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
well as the nutritional study. I think that if we had more time for the nutritional study and were consistent with the food
that we ate (stayed on diet) and with taking blood pressure/weighing ourselves it would have worked out better and
given more results.

7 I've really enjoyed this class. I especially liked the first unit (infectious diseases) and the final project, although the 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
infectious disease projects did feel like the kind of dragged on--although maybe I just didn't pick the right topic. I
definitely think the final project is a really good way to end the class. I also really liked the nutritional study. It was a fun
way to engage in the material and it wasn't that bad to do it together for just one week.

8 I think that we may have spent too much time on the immune system unit. I know that it was helpful to learn, but I feel 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
like we spent a really long time on this unit. I think that we should keep our final project because its a good chance for
us to research things that we are each personally interested in.

9 I think that the time we spent learning about cholesterol was a little brief, and didn't really mesh that well with most of 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
the other content.

10 I would recommend doing the project on the disease again, but not in an article form because it was not as engaging 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
as maybe it could have been.

11 I really enjoyed doing the ELISA testing lab. That was an awesome and very hands on way to learn about diseases 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
and how to test for them. In addition, I also enjoyed the nutritional study as it was something fun, and unique. There
was nothing that didn't work for me in all honesty.

12 I really liked learning how to write scientific articles in a way that was interesting and immersive. Reading Spillover was 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
really fun and a great introduction to the topic of zoonotic diseases.

13 I think we should have read more of the book that we had at the beginning. I thought that the class went really well in 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
the 1st half. The 2nd half felt rushed.

14 I really enjoyed the first unit, and learned a lot about the immune system. I wish we had more time to focus on a 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
lesson plan on any topic we chose.

15 I really like the disease unit and how we all focus on and present separate diseases. I didn't enjoy the diet unit, 6/6/2016 12:49 PM
because I don't really like altering my diet. I also feel that we didn't do much with the data at the end. We kind of just
entered the data and that was it.

16 The nutritional study was a big flop but the initial one analyzing the disease was very good. I'd like to see more 6/6/2016 12:48 PM
projects like that.

17 I think the nutritional study and disease projects were really cool. The disease project was my favorite, because it 6/6/2016 12:48 PM
really spoke to the whole name of the course: "Human Health and DISEASE". It was definitely the most interesting
part and having the chance to independently research and present on something like MRSA (this is Bobby, obviously)
was really, really cool.

18 The nutritional study really was a downer for the class and me personally and affected my other school work. 6/6/2016 12:47 PM

Q2 We got to a lot less than I imagined we

would. What are some topics that were not
covered that you would have liked to have
covered? Did it feel like we spent too long
on anything?

1 Overall, the class felt well balanced and definitely gave us necessary skills to continue our studies beyond the class. I 6/6/2016 12:56 PM
felt that the human health portion of the class was a little shorter than I would have liked and that we spent a little too
long on diseases. I would have liked to learn more about how to determine what is "healthy" and focus more on
confirming/debunking the many health myths. Home remedies was an example of this - perhaps doing some research
on particular claims about what works to, say, cure the common cold, to see how scientifically supported such claims
are.

2 Exercise science along with more physical health! also some mental heath stuff would be good also I think more 6/6/2016 12:53 PM
anatomy stuff would have been cool.

3 I think addiction, and like the bright side to all of this stuff. 6/6/2016 12:53 PM

4 I think it would have been really nice to have more information on genetic disorders and epigenetics. These are the 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
kind of issues most of us see more often. And maybe more of that myth debunking like we did with cholestorol and
HFCS

5 I think timing wise it was really well constructed. It would have been interesting to do a little more on cancer and learn 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
some of the more intricate things we have never covered before on this subject.

6 I think we could have looked more on cancer maybe and also spent longer on the nutritional unit. I felt like in the 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
beginning we spent a long time on infectious disease because of our projects and that could have been shortened.

7 I think the infectious disease topic probably went a little long. It's hard to say exactly what we could have done with the 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
other time--i would be interested to here what you had in mind. I feel like we spent a lot of time on cancer and genetic
diseases in bio 1, so I would say probably neither of those. I do think that mental health is really interesting though so
that could be something to consider.

8 I think it would be interesting to go more in depth about cancer and how it works 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

9 I feel like we spent a lot of time on the infectious disease project, and while I enjoyed being able to pick and research 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
an individual disease, I think maybe only having a presentation deliverable or only an article would have opened up
more time to learn other topics.

10 I think that we spent too long on the immune system, but I think we could have learned about cancer with it. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

11 I would have enjoyed going over more global health topics, and addiction as those are both very interesting, relevant 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
topics.

12 I kind of liked that the class wasn't as structured, and we mainly focused more on researching our own 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
topics/diseases. I also like how the course seemed to be very project based. Those lectures are also very helpful.

13 I would have liked to have covered more of the diseases and causes of them. We focused on how they are 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
transmitted, but like origins, and stuff like that would be cool. More of an in-depth look at the course of diseases.

14 I feel like we spent too long on infectious diseases and would have liked to at least touch briefly on mental health as a 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
class.

15 I would like to go a little deeper into diseases. I feel like a class discussion would be nice. 6/6/2016 12:49 PM

16 I would have liked to go more in depth on allergies and spent less time on nutritional stuff, a field of science where it 6/6/2016 12:48 PM
seems like there are no "right answers".

17 I think it would have been cooler if we had read more from Spillover/used the book more. I've read some of it in the 6/6/2016 12:48 PM
past couple of weeks and it's a really interesting book that brings up a lot of cool facts and information about diseases.

18 more on infectious diseases, most interesting, less on how the cell works 6/6/2016 12:47 PM

Q4 Does the teacher have any notable

strengths or weaknesses not covered by
the previous questions?

1 I really appreciate Hannah's passion for science and the material she teaches as well as her broad understanding of 6/6/2016 1:01 PM
the different fields. She has a really clear way of explaining things and always has another way to phrase things when
we are confused. Her presentation of material is clear and she consistently challenges us to use a variety of skills in
our assignments and to apply our understanding to current-world issues.

2 Nope all covered 6/6/2016 12:58 PM

3 She is one of the few teachers who is extremely proactive in helping student with learning disabilities which allowed 6/6/2016 12:56 PM
me to be successful in the class

4 She is very responsive to questions and great at answering those questions. She is also great at guiding us within 6/6/2016 12:55 PM
what can be very open ended and intimidating(but challenging in a good way) projects.

5 Ms. Lynch is a really great teacher. She's clearly very knowledgeable and is really good at explaining concepts both to 6/6/2016 12:54 PM
the whole class and one-on-one or in small groups. She also brings a fun, light-hearted energy to the class but is still
able to keep the class in control.

6 The teacher is very clear when presenting the material,a and gives very clear and direct feedback. 6/6/2016 12:54 PM

7 She is a really great teacher, cares about all of our learning and does a great job making the class interesting and fun. 6/6/2016 12:53 PM
She also is very good at taking student advice.

8 She is always prepared and the homework is always relevant and I always learn something new. She gives us plenty 6/6/2016 12:53 PM
of work time for our projects and explains everything very clearly!

9 Hannah is really good and explaining challenging concepts in a clear and straightforward manner 6/6/2016 12:52 PM

10 Hannah is an incredible teacher! She is very enthusiastic about the subject manner and is able to break down difficult 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
concepts so that they are understandable. In addition, there are always a variety of activities so class is never boring.

11 Hannah is super nice and supportive of all of us, and really patient with our questions. She provides great feedback on 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
our work, and we also know what level of work she expects from us. Also another huge thing that I appreciate so much
is that the tests and quizzes we've had are actually on material that we go over as a class.

12 Most of the homework was useful, but I feel that some of it was mostly a lot of reading that could be easily condensed 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
if we went over it in class instead.

13 Hannah is really good about giving thoughtful, constructive feedback in a short period of which is really helpful when 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
working on projects.

14 Hannah is an incredible teacher who knows so much. She is a difficult teacher and sometimes it is a bit overwhelming, 6/6/2016 12:51 PM
but she is a phenomenal teacher.

15 Nope. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

1 One thing that may help is to provide a list of a few things to focus on in our readings of text book and articles, since 6/6/2016 1:01 PM
many can be detailed and long. Doing a Do Now was also helpful in her previous classes because it challenged me to
recall what I had read and put it into my own words and also gave me a sense of what information was important that I
focus on.

2 No improvement needed 6/6/2016 12:58 PM

3 a little fewer lectures 6/6/2016 12:56 PM

4 I honestly can't think of anything in specific that she doesn't do a good job of. 6/6/2016 12:55 PM

5 i can't really think of anything atm. 6/6/2016 12:54 PM

6 It would be helpful to connect the material a little more. It would be helpful to show how sections of a unit are related 6/6/2016 12:54 PM
instead of showing them as separate, non-related things.

7 Continue doing what you have been doing :) 6/6/2016 12:53 PM

8 Honestly, nothing. 6/6/2016 12:52 PM

9 Maybe assign less reading homework and more videos? I learn better through videos and visual. 6/6/2016 12:52 PM

10 Maybe we could have another lab and one less lecture. The lectures were very important and informative, but I feel 6/6/2016 12:52 PM
that another lab in place of the diet lab would be fun.

11 Slowing down on the lectures would be helpful to better absorb some of the information. 6/6/2016 12:52 PM

12 I would say limit the amount of homework. That was one thing that was really hard. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

13 Maybe spend a bit more time on final projects instead of the nutritional study. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

14 Less lectures and limit the amount of reading that we have to do, it has been overbearing at certain points 6/6/2016 12:50 PM

1 The pace felt to fast to me, but that was because I kept having to catch up or make up things. 6/6/2016 12:59 PM

2 We seemed to spend an uneven amount of time on different things. The communicable disease portion went very 6/6/2016 12:59 PM
slowly, especially with reading the book(though it was a fun read). Meanwhile the nutrition portion went dizzyingly fast
and didn't seem to include a lot of information outside of our own research. It would have been helpful to have a
review+ new information about the basic mechanics of the digestive system.

3 nope 6/6/2016 12:57 PM

4 for the most part it was just right but it felt a little slow with infectious diseases. 6/6/2016 12:57 PM

5 We could have spent less time on the immune system and more time on reviewing for the diet test. 6/6/2016 12:56 PM

6 Even though we only covered a few topics, I felt like the pace was a little bit fast. For example, it feels like the lesson 6/6/2016 12:56 PM
plan is rushed, while we could have spent less time on infectious diseases.

7 i think we tried to cover too many things in a short amount of time, which made it so we spent a really long time on 6/6/2016 12:54 PM
some units while a really short amount of time on the others.

8 I thought this class was paced fine. It may come off as a little slow to some people, since a lot of the time, we are just 6/6/2016 12:54 PM
working with our partners on projects.

9 The last part felt really fast. 6/6/2016 12:52 PM

10 It got a bit rushed towards the end. Trying to cram a lot into a short span. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

activity or homework assignment that you
thought was particularly successful in
helping you learn? Specifically what did
you learn that you did not know or know
how to do before?
Answered: 16 Skipped: 2

1 I learned a lot of new, fascinating information from the infectious disease articles and discussions we had. I also 6/6/2016 1:03 PM
particularly enjoyed the group research projects, especially the final one, and feel that what I have learned about
stress will be beneficial to me in the rest of my life and is a very relevant issue to the era.

2 The AIDS STD transmission was really interesting but also very scary because it is so realistic and actually happens. 6/6/2016 12:59 PM

3 I really liked the melodramatic video about when viruses attack! It was very effective at teaching a very complicated 6/6/2016 12:59 PM
concept.

4 the disease projects was great 6/6/2016 12:57 PM

5 I feel like I learned a lot when we broke up into small groups to do research on specific diets for a day. My group did 6/6/2016 12:57 PM
gluten-free and I hadn't realized that it really has no effect unless you are celiac, gluten-intolerant, or autistic. I feel like
every time we took an in-depth look at something--so that research, the infectious disease project, or the final project--
we were able to gain a lot of information from doing research (with guidance).

6 I found the book spillover to be very helpful in understanding how diseases spread and the nature of them. I thought it 6/6/2016 12:56 PM
was a really good choice for the introduction reading.

7 I learned a lot from the first unit about the immune system. I also enjoyed starting off by reading about zoonotic 6/6/2016 12:56 PM
diseases and then getting to write a scientific paper on an infectious disease.

8 I loved the ELISA lab because we could see and track an infectious disease throughout the class. It was clear and 6/6/2016 12:54 PM
effective. It was also effective and helpful to have a lab write up for it so that we cloud explain what we saw/found in
the results.

9 i really liked the activity where we had to figure out who had AIDS 6/6/2016 12:54 PM

10 Reading Spillover was fun, reading about microbiome was fun, doing the class diet was great too. I learned how much 6/6/2016 12:54 PM
diet can affect one's body.

11 The ELISA test was particularly successful at strengthening our understanding for that unit. 6/6/2016 12:53 PM

12 I thought that the ELISA testing was an activity that really helped my understanding of diseases. Especially with 6/6/2016 12:53 PM
understanding the concepts of virulence, and disease thresholds, and how diseases can spread.

13 The disease presentation. I learned a lot more about ebola, SARS, the plague,etc... 6/6/2016 12:52 PM

14 The first disease project was really great. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

15 infectious disease article, in the future don't make it an article try and have it be something different. 6/6/2016 12:51 PM

16 The disease project, reading Spillover. 6/6/2016 12:50 PM
