EXPERIMENT NO. 1
Preparation of Aspirin
Apparatus:
i. Flask Round bottom ii. beaker iii. burner
iv. stand v. wire gauze. vi. Stirrer
vii. Funnel viii. Filter paper etc
Chemicals:
i. Salicylic acid = 5.0 g
ii. Acetyl chloride = 5 ml
iii. Pyridine = 10 cm3
Chemical Reaction:

Procedure:
Take 10.0 ml of
pyridine in round bottom
flask and dissolve 5.0 g of
salicylic acid in it. Warm
the solution on water bath.
Then add 5 cm3 of acetyl
chloride drop wire with the
help of droper or pipette
with continuously shaking
the mixture. The
temperature should be in
between 60 70OC. Heat
the mixture for 10 15
minutes and the flask can
be cooled with water if
needed.
Add 150 cm3 of cold water in it, stir vigorously. Aspirin separates out as
white solid. Filter it and washed with water.
Result:
I have prepared the white crystals of Aspirin and shown to the
examiner.
Note:
In second method we can also prepare aspirin with help of these
chemicals:
(i) Salicylic acid (ii) Acetic anhydride (iii) conc.
H2SO4
