Passage 1
-There's a New Planet With Three Suns-
On Thursday, a team of researchers published their discovery of the exoplanet HD 131399 Ab, in Science, namely, its chilling
with not one, not two, but three suns.
Nothing quite like HD 131399 Ab. has ever been seen before, and it opens a door to the study of planetary formation and
movement between orbits in dynamic multi-star systems, which are way more common than you might think and are surprisingly
under examined.
It is still unclear how HD 131399 Ab. formed to get its unusual orbit. In the three star system, HD 131399 Ab. orbits the single A
star, and passes in between the A star and the BC star couple. Wagner and his team have several theories about how HD 131399 Ab.
could have formed around one of the stars, where it was then ejected into its current orbit.
A planet that crosses in between two stars let alone three has a huge chance of getting ejected either out into space, or into one
of the stars. HD 131399 Ab. is apparently stable, despite the fact that it has a surprisingly wide orbit. Wagner says he thinks HD
131399 Abs orbit is right on the boundary of what can be stable, but the research team needs to do more analysis of HD 131399
Abs orbit to actually understand how it works and how it was formed.
Even though it had three suns with it, HD 131399 Ab. was not an easy find. Searching for exoplanets said is like looking for
your lost keys on a dark street, says Veselin Kostov, a NASA postdoc studying exoplanets at the Goddard Space Flight Center. You
look under a streetlight first not because your keys are most likely to be there, but because thats the easiest place to look. As our
methods for finding exoplanets have gotten better, weve found more street lights (metaphorically). Suddenly we can find planets in
parts of space that wed never dreamed of finding, like HD 131399 Ab. And from these planets, Kostov says, We learn about the
origin, the history, the evolution, the future of planets in general.

Passage 2
-Huge coral reef discovered at Amazon river mouth-
A huge 3,600 sq. mile (9,300 sq. km.) coral reef system has been found below the muddy waters off the mouth of the river
Amazon, astonishing scientists, governments and oil companies who have started to explore on top of it.
The existence of the 600-mile long reef, which ranges from about 30-120m deep and stretches from French Guiana to Brazils
Maranho state, was not suspected because many of the worlds great rivers produce major gaps in reef systems where no corals
grow.
In addition, there was little previous evidence because corals mostly thrive in clear, sunlit, salt water, and the equatorial waters
near the mouth of the Amazon are some of the muddiest in the world, with vast quantities of sediment washed thousands of miles
down the river and swept hundreds of miles out to sea.
But the reef appears to be thriving below the freshwater plume, or outflow, of the Amazon. Compared to many other reefs, the
scientists say in a paper in Science Advances on Friday, it is is relatively impoverished. Nevertheless, they found over 60 species
of sponges, 73 species of fish, spiny lobsters, stars and much other reef life.
Its discovery came as a complete surprise, says co-author Patricia Yager, a professor of oceanography and climate change at the
University of Georgia. I was flabbergasted, as were the rest of the 30 oceanographers. Traditionally, our understanding of reefs has
focused on tropical shallow coral reefs which harbor biodiversity that rivals tropical rainforests, she told The Atlantic.
But the reef, no sooner found, is said to be in grave danger. According to the paper, the Brazilian government has sold 80 blocks for
oil exploration and drilling at the mouth of the Amazon and 20 of these are already producing oil some, it is thought, right on top
of the reef.
