Who is a Champion?

Champions are responsible for functional business activities and to provide

business deliverables to either internal or external customers. They are in a
position to be able to recognize problem areas of the business, define
improvement projects, assign projects to appropriate individuals, review projects
and support their completion. They are also responsible for a business roadmap
and employee training plan to achieve the goals and objectives of Six Sigma
within their area of accountability.A champion is a senior-level manager who
promotes the six sigma methodology throughout the organization and especially
in functional groups. A champion may be termed as a process owner.A champion
understands the discipline and tools of six sigma, participates in selecting
projects, establishes objectives, serves as coach and mentor and removes
barriers.Champions are responsible for monitoring and managing each critical
element in six sigma. They do whatever it tatakes to keep the project on schedule.
They must be fully engaged in the process, allotting at least 20%-30% of their
time to ensuring that black belts are making progress on their projects and
effecting lasting changes. The black belt and project teams hunt defects and
waste, but it is the champion who selects the project and monitors progress. They
also ensure that the teams share what they learn, they transfer the knowledge
into other areas and increase the results exponentially.

Black Belt

A Black Belt is a project team leader, working full time to solve problems under
the direction of a Champion, and with technical support from the Master Black
Belt. Black Belts work on projects that are relatively complex and require
significant focus to resolve. Most Black Belts conduct an average of 4 to 6 projects
a year -- projects that usually have a high financial return for the company. To
