Theeffectwassostrongthatnewoutbreaksoffightingweremore
likelyevenifafriendofafriendandonwardsuptofourdegreesof
separationhadbeenviolent.
Oneoftheresearchers,ProfessorRobertBond,ofOhioState
University,said:Thisstudyshowsjusthowcontagiousviolencecan
be.

Wereactuallypreventingviolencenotonlyinthatperson,but
potentiallyforallthepeopletheycomeincontactwith.
InLondon,therehaslongbeenaproblemwithstabbings,mainly
carriedoutbyteenageboysandyoungmen.
InAugustthisyear,therewere1,749stabbingsofpeopleagedunder25
inthecity,afouryearhigh.However,gangactivitywasblamedforless
than5percentofknifecrimeinthecity.

In2006,DannyandRickyPreddie,fromPeckham,southLondon,were

convictedofthemanslaughterof10yearoldDamilolaTaylor,who
bledtodeathafterbeingstabbedinthelegwithabrokenbottlein
November2000whenthePreddiebrotherswere12and13.
IntheUSstudy,researchersstudiedinformationaboutnearly6,000
youngpeople,mostaged12to18,whotookpartintheNational
LongitudinalStudyofAdolescentHealthinthe1990s.
Theadolescentswereaskedhowofteninthepast12monthstheyhad
beeninaseriousphysicalfight,howoftentheyhurtsomeonebadly
enoughtoneedmedicalattention,andhowoftentheyhadpulleda
knifeorgunonsomeone.
Theywere183percentmoreliketohavehurtsomeonebadly,140per
centmorelikelytohavedrawnaweaponand48percentmorelikelyto
havebeeninaseriousfightiftheyhadafriendwhohaddone
somethingsimilar.
ProfessorBradBushman,anotheroftheresearchers,said:Wenow
haveevidencethatshowshowimportantsocialrelationshipsareto
spreadingviolentbehaviour,justliketheyareforspreadingmanyother
kindsofattitudesandbehaviours.
Thestudyechoesothersthathavelookedintotheeffectofsocial
networksonarangeofdifferentkindsofattitudesandbehaviour,from
happinesstoobesityandsmoking.

friendhadbeeninone,thisfiguredroppedto18percentifafriendofa
friendhad.
