BIRTH OF A REFRESHING IDEA
The product that has given the world its best-known taste was
born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1886. Dr. John Stith
Pemberton, a local pharmacist, produced the syrup for Coca-
Cola®, and carried a jug of the new product down the street to
Jacobs' Pharmacy, where it was sampled, pronounced
"excellent" and placed on sale for five cents a glass as a soda
fountain drink. Carbonated water was teamed with the new
syrup to produce a drink that was at once "Delicious and
Refreshing," a theme that continues to echo today wherever Coca-Cola is enjoyed.

Thinking that "the two Cs would look well in advertising," Dr. Pemberton's partner
and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name and penned the now famous
trademark "Coca-Cola" in his unique script. The first newspaper ad for Coca-Cola

Human Resource Management 10

soon appeared in The Atlanta Journal, inviting thirsty citizens to try "the new and
popular soda fountain drink." Hand-painted oilcloth signs reading "Coca-Cola"
appeared on store awnings, with the suggestion "Drink" added to inform passersby
that the new beverage was for soda fountain refreshment. During the first year, sales
averaged a modest nine drinks per day.

Dr. Pemberton never realized the potential of the beverage he created. He gradually
sold portions of his business to various partners and, just prior to his death in 1888,
sold his remaining interest in Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler. An Atlantan with great
business acumen, Mr. Candler proceeded to buy additional rights and acquire
complete control.

The Coca-Cola Company exists to benefit and refresh everyone it touches. Founded
in 1886, Coca-Cola Company is the world's leading manufacturer, marketer, and
distributor of nonalcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups, used to produce nearly
400 beverage brands. Its corporate headquarters are in Atlanta, with local operations
in over 200 countries around the world.
Coca-Cola is the most popular and biggest-selling soft drink in history, as well as the
best-known product in the world. Created in Atlanta, Georgia by Dr. John S.
Pemberton, Coca-Cola was first offered as a fountain beverage by mixing Coca-Cola
syrup with carbonated water.

Human Resource Management 11

Coca-Cola was registered as a trademark in 1887 and by 1895 Coca-Cola was being
sold in every state and territory in the United States. In 1899, the company began
franchised bottling operations in the United States. Today, you can find Coca-Cola in
virtually every part of the world. The Coca-Cola Company has nearly 400 beverages
in its portfolio.

Atlanta

Human Resource Management 13

In May, 1886, Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from
Atlanta, Georgia. John Pemberton concocted the Coca Cola formula in a three legged
brass kettle in his backyard. The name was a suggestion given by John Pemberton's
bookkeeper Frank Robinson.

Coca-Cola® originated as a soda fountain beverage in 1886 selling for five cents a
glass. Early growth was impressive, but it was only when a strong bottling system
developed that Coca-Cola became the world-famous brand it is today.

The world has changed in many ways since pharmacist, John Styth Pemberton
first introduced the refreshing taste of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. However, the
pure and simple magic of one thing remains the same - Coca-Cola. The name and the
product mean so many things to hundreds of millions of consumers around the globe.
Coca-Cola products are served more than 705 million times every day, quenching the
thirsts of consumers in more than 195 countries in every climate. That's a long way to
come after such a modest beginning...

Human Resource Management 14

• Pemberton concocted a caramel-colored syrup in a three-
legged brass kettle in his backyard. He first "distributed" the new product by
carrying Coca-Cola in a jug down the street to Jacobs Pharmacy. For five
cents, consumers could enjoy a glass of Coca-Cola at the soda fountain.
Whether by design or accident, carbonated water was teamed with the new
syrup, producing a drink that was proclaimed "Delicious and Refreshing." Dr.
Pemberton's partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name
and penned, in the unique flowing script that is famous worldwide today, "

".

• Sales of Coca-Cola averaged nine drinks per day. That first year,
Dr. Pemberton sold 25 gallons of syrup, shipped in bright red wooden kegs.
Red has been a distinctive color associated with the No. 1 soft drink brand
ever since.

• Atlanta entrepreneur Asa G. Candler had acquired complete

ownership of the Coca-Cola business. Pemberton was forced to sell because
he was in a state of poor health and was in debt. He had paid $76.96 for
advertising, but he only made $50.00 in profits. Candler acquired the whole
company for $2,300. Within four years, Candler's merchandising flair helped
expand consumption of Coca-Cola to every state and territory.

• In January "Coca-Cola" was registered in the U.S. Patent office.

• The first syrup plant outside of Atlanta was opened in Dallas.

• Chandler's great achievement -- large scale bottling of Coca-

the biggest marketing blunder. They stumbled onto a new formula in efforts to
produce diet Coke. They put forth 4 million dollars of research to come up
with the new formula.

• July 10, eighty-seven days after the new Coke was introduced, the
old Coke was brought back in addition to the new one. This was greatly due
to dropping market share and consumer protest. The market share fell from a
high of 15 percent to a low of 1.4 percent. This was said to be a classic
marketing retreat. Coca-Cola executives admitted that they had goofed by
taking the old Coke off the market. The Coca-Cola company's eight hundred
number received eighteen thousand calls of gratitude. One caller said they felt
like a lost friend had returned home. The comeback of old Coke drove stock
prices to the highest level in twelve years. This was said to be the only way to
regain the lead on the cola wars.

Human Resource Management 38

Before going to explain the working of human resource department we must come to
know what is human resource management,

“HRM is the management of people working in the organization, it is a subject

related to human. In other words we can say that HRM is the management of human
or people. HRM is the managerial function that tries to match an organizational needs
to the skills and ability of employees .HRM is responsible how people are managed in
the organization .it is responsible for bringing people in organization helping them
perform their work, compensate tem for their work and solve their problems”

Role of Human Resource Management:

It is interesting time for human resource mangers. Globalize sales and production
mean, more competition and more competition means more pressure to improve i.e.
to lower cost, to make workers more productive, to do things better and less
expensively. For employers around the world, the human resource function is key
players in helping companies achieve these strategic aims. for example every third
firm rely on computerized HR technology to more efficiently track ,test, and select
job applicants.41%of large firms have internet based processes that let employees to
know their own needs like changes in benefits at least 25% firms provide their
employees with computer based training.
Human resource department of any organization plays an important role in
achievement of organizational goals. The company as stated above is working for
more than 30years and has proper department of human resources. We will discuss
about different issues of human resources management one by one.

Human Resource Management 39

Evaluation of Human Resource Department:

In the beginning the overall network of the company was very small. With the
passage of time as the company expanded its operational network more and more
people were hired now as the company was a multinational firm, therefore employees
started thinking that who will take care of there major issues like;

• Recruiting and selection

• Compensation packages
• Traveling facilities
• Retirement funds
• Social security
• Appraisals
• Security services
• Health and safety etc.
• Environment protection

To take care of these issues and to meet the changes in the world economies and
business scenario, that looked the labor force as the most vital asset of the
organization, it is very necessary to establish a unit who can serve this purpose.

HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING:

The objective of human resource department is to attract new people who are
capable, retain them as a satisfied employee and also create a healthy
environment to work safely and efficiently.

Every organization has position that need to be stuffed .Job analysis is the procedure
through which we can determine the duties of these positions and the characteristics
of the people to hire for them. Job analysis produces information for writing job
description (a list of what the job entails) and specifications (what kind of people to
hire for the job). Job analysis basically means to make job effective for the
employee by analyzing different requirements according to nature of job. There
are two components of job analysis:
1. Job Description
2. Job Specification

 Job Description:
