Subject: ASME B16.20 Spiral Wound Gasket Specifications for Inner Rings,
Default Selling Condition for Graphite and Mica-Graphite Spiral Wound Gaskets
In the early 1990's a requirement was added to ASME B16.20 for inner rings to be included on all PTFE filled
spiral wound gaskets (to be in conformance to ASME and stamped "ASME B16.20" on the outer ring). This was
in addition to requirements that certain size and pressure class spiral wound gaskets must have an inner ring to
conform and bear the ASME stamp, regardless of filler. These requirements are still in place. The 2007 edition
of ASME B16.20 included additional changes to the inner ring requirements for standard spiral wound gaskets.
The current 2007 ASME B16.20 edition calls for inner rings to be furnished with all flexible graphite filled spiral
wound gaskets "unless the purchaser specifies otherwise." For reference, please see the exerpt to par. 3.2.5 in
the attached memo. These requirements are largely given in context of concerns about inward buckling of the
winding element.
Because so many graphite filled and mica-graphite filled spiral wound gaskets continue to be ordered without
inner rings, we felt the responsible thing to do was to reissue our 2011 memo addressing this issue.
Additionally, we would like to clarify with our customers the requirements for inner ring use. Since the 2007
change affects flexible graphite filled spiral wounds, it should be indicated in writing on purchase orders or via
letter if future orders are not to have the inner rings for graphite filled or mica-graphite filled spiral wound
gaskets. Without such notice in writing, or on the purchase order, inner rings will be provided and reflected in
the price.
I hope this letter clarifies the inner ring requirements mandated in ASME B16.20. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact anyone at GRI for further assistance.
Sincerely,

ASME B16.20 was recently updated to make inner rings the default standard for graphite filled spiral wound
gaskets, as it already is for PTFE filled spiral wound gaskets.
The purchaser can still specify graphite filled spiral wound gaskets without inner rings, however. They must
realize this is an exception to the default standard with inner rings. In response to this new requirement,
customers ordering graphite filled spiral wound gaskets without inner rings must indicate so in writing via a
purchase order, e-mail or by letter.
Regardless of which style is ordered, the outer rings will be stamped ASME B16.20. This new revision has
been balloted and approved at the Sub Committee and Main Committee levels, and has been approved by
ANSI.
3.2.5 Inner Ring. Inward buckling of spiral-wound gaskets has been identified as a potential problem. Inner
rings shall be furnished with all spiral-wound gaskets having PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) filler material. Inner
rings for flexible graphite-filled spiral-wound gaskets shall be furnished unless the purchaser specifies otherwise.
For all filler materials, inner rings shall be furnished in spiral-wound gaskets for:
Inner rings are required for these gaskets due to high available bolt loads, which may result in outer ring
damage. The inner ring thickness shall be from 2.97 to 3.33mm (0.117 to 0.131 in). Tables 12 through 14
(Tables I-7 through I-9 of Mandatory Appendix I ) show inner ring inside diameters that may extend a maximum
of 1.5mm ( 0.06 in. ) into the flange bore under the worst combination of flange bore, eccentric installation, and
tolerance. Gaskets with inner rings should be used only with socket welding, lapped, welding neck, and integral
flanges. Reference Table 15 for minimum pipe wall thickness for use with gaskets with inner rings. Reference
Tables 16, 17 and 18 (TablesI-10 and I-11 of Mandatory Appendix I) for maximum allowable bore for use with
gaskets without inner rings.
