INTRODUCTION
During this short semester, I have chosen Fueg Architects to be my place of internship training. As
it is a small company, I was given a variety of different jobs that range from design to contract
paperwork. The internship took place from 3rd January 2017 till 3rd March 2017. The following is a
report of my working experiences of the past 8 weeks.
For my first week of training, I was given the task to design the site plan for an on-going housing
development project which was still in the design phase. Designing the site plan included the
planning of roads, guardhouses, setbacks and types of houses. I was told to maximise the amount of
corner lot and end lot bungalows as they have a higher market price as compared to intermediate
lots. Prior to the planning, I had to read up on basic housing laws in Selangor as well as bomba
regulations such as the setback of houses from the roads and maximum length of the street. It was
quite a new experience for me as all dimensions were given in feet instead of meters such as road
widths, lot sizes and so on. After planning, I photo shopped and rendered the plan to prepare it for
presentation. I also included a table of the various unit types, lot sizes and number of units using a
pleasant colour scheme.
After my first assignment was completed, I was asked to design the floor plan of the Waterfront
Villa units. This was very challenging as the spacial arrangement of rooms on the ground floor
contrasts to the conventional types as the utility spaces were places in front of the house rather than
at the back as the client wanted to maximise the view facing the waterfront. Therefore spaces such
as guestrooms and toilets were moved to the front. I also had to refer to the UBBL setbacks for the
building as well as for the parking lot and roof overhangs. The rest was quite smooth as I was
familiarised with standard walkway and room dimensions in houses during my previous semester in
Taylors University. After cadding, I plotted and coloured the plans in Photoshop in order to prepare
them for presentation. Lastly, I assisted in the calculation of the GFA (Gross floor area) tables for the
bungalow to estimate how much it can be sold for. The total time frame for this project was
approximately 2 weeks.
For the next project, I was paired up with another UCSI intern to propose a retail boulevard beside
Federal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. We went for a site visit on the first day to conduct a site analysis and
also require some basic measurements such as the road and walkway widths. I applied all the
knowledge I obtained from my 2 years of degree in Taylors such as paying attention to vehicular
traffic, pedestrian circulation, public nodes and many more. After returning from the site, we
thought of a modern approach that takes advantage of trending modern cultures in Malaysia. We
managed to successfully propose a concept and a design proposal. Spaces and programmes were
added in later on. I took on the concept, site analysis and other presentation boards including plans
and 3D renderings. It was a rare opportunity for me to propose a design from scratch outside from
university and it was a good chance to showcase all the various skills I have learnt from the past few
years in degree.
For my final project in this span of 8 weeks, I was tasked to design the faade and 3D of the
Bungalow and Semi-D factories to propose to the client Barisan Elite using similar architectural
language used by previous designs with my own personal touch. I suggested that the renderings
should include views towards the interior of the building as the client wanted the faade to look less
dark and more welcoming. I also played around with materials and learned how to use 2 new 3D
modelling and rendering programmes which was Google Sketch up and also Lumion 6 as they did not
teach the use of these software in Taylors. Just like for the waterfront villas, I assisted in the
calculation of GFA and presentation drawings and colouring.
