HOME ASSIGNMENT -4

Practice problem not to be submitted

ME341-A

Lumped System Analysis

414 The temperature of a gas stream is to be measured by a thermocouple whose

junction can be approximated as a 1.2-mm-diameter sphere. The properties of the

3
Cp
junction are k = 35 W/m C, = 8500 kg/ m , and = 320 J/kg C, and the

2
heat transfer coefficient between the junction and the gas is h = 65 W/ m C.

Determine how long it will take for the thermocouple to read 99 percent of the initial

temperature difference.

Transient Heat Conduction in Semi-Infinite Solids

4-64 The soil temperature in the upper layers of the earth varies with the variations in

the atmospheric conditions. Before cold front moves in, the earth at a location is initially

at a uniform temperature of 10C. Then the area is subjected to a temperature of -10C

2
and high winds that resulted in a convection heat transfer coefficient of 40 W/ m C

on the earths surface for a period of 10 h. Taking the properties of the soil at that

m2 /s, determine the soil

5
location to be k = 0.9 W/m C and = 1.6 * 10

temperature at distances 0, 10, 20, and 50 cm from the earths surface at the end of this

10-h period.
