Story Touch is a complete

dramatic development
software. Colors and graphs
will give you a veritable X-ray
of your script.

You will be able to accompany the emotional

evolution and values involved in the script, feel
the tones and rhythms of the story, quantify the
presence of any one character, visualize the size
of acts, sequences and scenes. The software will
also allow you to see the turning points, crises
and climaxes in the story.

And better still, you will be able to see all

this together and compare items on the same
screen, tracing relations that will reveal,
with impressive clarity, structural connections
impossible to notice by merely reading the text.

I. GETTING STARTED

Story Touch - Guides User | 5

1. New Screenplay and text editor

Go to File > New Script

The TEXT EDITOR provides the

correct format to the screenplay,
just use the Enter and/or Tab
keys as guide. On the lower
part of the page you will find
information on the cursor line.

You may also change the format using shortcuts:

New Scene = Command 1 or Ctrl 1
Action = Command 2 or Ctrl 2
Character = Command 3 or Ctrl 3
Parenthetical = Command 4 or Ctrl 4
Dialogue = Command 5 or Ctrl 5
Transition = Command 6 or Ctrl 6
Shot = Command 7 or Ctrl 7

Story Touch - Guides User | 6

Use the SMARTTYPE function to write the script. Any new location, time, transition, shot or character
is automatically added to the list so you dont need to type it over and over again.
The list of characters in the SMARTTYPE function obeys the order of distance between characters of
the preceding dialogue, adding agility to writing.
For example, if JOHN and MARY are talking, after MARYS lines the first name to appear on the list is
that of JOHN, and so successively.
The list continues with the names of other characters from the same scene as well as the others
already found in the screenplay.

Story Touch - Guides User | 10

1. INTERFACE

There are basically four windows:

Graph
window

Script
window

Control window Scene window

Story Touch - Guides User | 11

2. SCRIPT WINDOW
n the Script Window, besides using the text editor, it is also possible to create new Acts,
Sequences, Dramatic Units or Scenes. For example: place cursor over the scene you want to
make into a new Act and click on the proper icon:

A letter A will appear on

the Scripts left border

The same with Sequences or

Dramatic Units (group of sequential
scenes that have been separated for
productions reasons alone, and that
actually behave as one single scene;
the dramatic scene).

If you create a new Scene, it will

appear following the scene you are in.

Story Touch - Guides User | 12

3. SCENES WINDOW
The whole script divided in Acts, Sequences, Dramatic Units and Scenes.

The size of the scenes is proportional to the number of lines. The wider the space the
longer the scene.

By clicking on any Scene (or Act, etc.) the Script will go to that point.

If you pass the mouse over the Scene, the Scene Heading will appear.

Story Touch - Guides User | 13

If you pass the mouse over the
Scene with the button Option or Alt
pressed, the first Action paragraph
will also appear.

By double-clicking on any Act or

Sequence, a window will appear. It is
possible to write a summary and name it.

By double-clicking on Dramatic
Units, besides name and summary,
you may also write the subtext of
each Dramatic Unit.

Story Touch - Guides User | 14

Individual graphs for VALUES that change in this
Dramatic Unit are found in the window as well.

In the Scenes Window, Dramatic Units that

do not change their value are marked in red
in the VALUE BAR.

By double-clicking on SCENES, you will be

able to include other information, such
as the duration, the dramatic time and the
work stage of that scene.

By clicking on the Scene (or Act,

etc.) with Command or Ctrl pressed,
the length of the scene, in number
of pages, will appear.

By clicking and dragging with

Command or Ctrl pressed, the length
of the group of Scenes (or Acts, etc.)
will appear.

Story Touch - Guides User | 15

The DRAMATIC TIME bar is
found under the scenes. Scenes
in the past are marked in green,
in the future, in yellow and
atemporal scenes are in purple.

You can move a scene in the

script through the Scenes Window.
Just click and drag it.

If you want to move a group of

scenes, click and drag over the
scenes selected with Shift pressed.
Then, just click again and drag the
group to the desired point on the
script.

It is possible to zoom into any region of the script. Just drag one
end of the Zoom Bar or roll the mouse.

To see the whole script again,

just click on the Zoom Icon.

Story Touch - Guides User | 16

Story Touch - Guides User | 19

6. STRUCTURE
It is possible to deal with three different elements in the Structure:

1. Macrostructure

2. Objective / Obstacle

3. Set Up / Pay off

Macrostructure allows to follow the main events of the story. Apply it directly
on the script and a window will pop up for editing.

Story Touch - Guides User | 20

Objective / Obstacle
allows to follow the
trajectory of any
character.

You have to create an

objective / obstacle
pair, clicking on the
corresponding icon in the
Control Window .

Story Touch - Guides User | 21

Set up / Pay off allows
following events throughout
the story.

In the same way, you

have to create an set up/
pay off pair, clicking on
the corresponding icon in
the Control Window.

Story Touch - Guides User | 22

7. CHARACTERS
Characters may vary from 0 to 10 on each scene, as a bar graph.

All characters with lines

are automatically detected.
The five most participative
are classified as main
characters, the next five, as
secondary characters, and
the others as bit part.

Main characters receive

the initial value of 5,
sencondary characters, 3,
and bit parts, 1.

Double-click on the name to reclassify it.

Story Touch - Guides User | 23

Use the SCAN CHARACTERS tool to add new characters that participate in dialogues or not, like the
Rooster* in the film City of God. Where there are no dialogues you should first create the character in the
Control Window.
* Rooster is called Galo, in Portuguese.

It is possible to change the value of the character by clicking and dragging up or down directly its bar on
the graph.

The width of each bar is proportional to the size of the scene the character is in.

Story Touch - Guides User | 24

You can visualize the graph in strips
for each character as well, using the
COMPOSED VIEW TAB.

It is possible to combine the

Characters graph with other elements.
For example, you may follow the
characters presence and the
Macrostructure events connected to it
throughout the Script.

Or even follow Characters and

their objectives simultaneously,
among other options.

Story Touch - Guides User | 25

8. TRACKS
Use the TRACK tool to highlight and accompany scenes that make up a set within a story.
For example, in City of God, we can accompany the scenes that show how Dadinho became Z
Pequeno; or those that make up the track of the war between Z Pequeno and Man Galinha in the
climax of the story.

Create a TRACK by clicking on the icon in the Control Window and apply to script by dragging it
directly to the desired scene.
You can write a summary or explanation in each application.

Story Touch - Guides User | 26

On the left side of the
script scene heading,
there is the icon indicating
the number of tracks
connected to that scene.

Select the TRACK you want to see in the graph in the Control Window.
You can visualize them either in bar or strip form by using the composed view tab, as well as in the
characters graph.

Access the TRACK TABLE.

There you will be able to
visualize all the tracks
and their summaries,
scene by scene, in one
sole window.

Story Touch - Guides User | 27

9. VALUES
Values may vary from -3 to +3, as a continuous curve.

By clicking on any point

of the curve, the Script
will go to that point.

It is possible to change
the intensity of the Value
by dragging up or down
any point on the curve.

To create a Value, click on the corresponding icon in the Control Window.

Values always work as opposing pairs. For

example, values (always in the order negative/
positive), can be: injustice/justice; destiny/
freedom; depression/euphoria.

The Dramatic Units with no change in values are

highlighted in red in the VALUE BAR in the Scene Window.

To check the altered values and their initial and final

intensities merely click twice on the Dramatic Unit.

Story Touch - Guides User | 28

10. EMOTIONS

Emotions may
vary from 0 to 10,
according to their
intensity, as a
continuous curve.
For example, Emotions
can be: Tension,
Humor, Trickery,
Suspense, etc.

By clicking once on any point of the curve, the Script will go to that point.

It is possible to change the Value of the emotion by dragging up or down any point of the
curve.

To create an emotion, click

on the correspondent icon in
the Control Window.

Story Touch - Guides User | 29

11. ANALYST
All the names of the analysts
who have commented on the
project can be found in the
analyst folder in the control
window.

You can visualize all

comments on the script and
on the graph, but you are only
able to edit, add or delete
your own.

When adding a comment to the script for the first time, define the analysts name and color.

Add positive, negative or neutral

comments directly to the desired point
in the script on the right margin.

You can add a title, summary and

value to each comment.

The SMARTTYPE function works on the comment titles as well. You will therefore be able to
repeat titles in other comments you make without having to rewrite them again.

Story Touch - Guides User | 30

The analyst icons are found on the right side of the script. Merely pass the mouse over them to
access the information.

You can alter the value of your comments directly on the graph by dragging it up or down.

To alter your name, color and SMARTTYPE title options, go to Preferences > Analyst Options or press
Command or Ctrl.

After finishing your comments

go to Report > Analyst Report
to add general comments and
alter specific ones.

Story Touch - Guides User | 31

You can print or
create a separate file
for the analysts. Go to
Report > Print Analyst
Report.

Configure the report

to your needs and
click in Print. You can
also create a PDF file
by clicking on the
corresponding flap.

Story Touch - Guides User | 32

Both are bar graphs,

divided by the
Dramatic Units.

To change their intensity, just drag each bar up or down.

very dark (black) to
very light (white).

Story Touch - Guides User | 33

13. BLANK SCENE
Use the Blank Scene tool when you have two moments (scenes, points, etc...) defined in the
story, but you still dont know what the scenes that will link them are like.

Place the cursor over the end of

the first moment and insert the
Blank Scene, clicking on the icon.

Then, double-click on the icon next

to the scene on the script and edit the
information of this Blank Scene (such as
estimated duration, ideas, notes, etc).

Story Touch - Guides User | 34

If you change the division of the scenes window, from script pages to time, clicking on the
correspondent icon, you will be able to see the blank scenes in the Scenes Window as well, functioning
as a normal scene.

To erase the Blank Scene just backspace it from the script directly.
