5.1(C) analyze the short-term and long-term harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco,
and other substances on the functions of the body systems such as physical,
mental, social, and legal consequences;
5.1(F) explain strategies for avoiding violence, gangs, weapons and drugs;
5.12(A) identify the author's viewpoint or position and explain the basic
relationships among ideas (e.g., parallelism, comparison, causality) in the
argument; and
Possible responses:
-Tell people
-Not smoke
-Put up signs
The students suggested we put up the anti-smoking advertisements around the track, so
that is what we did. We put them on posters and laminated them, so they could hang
outside. The students felt proud of their work because they are advocates for a cause!
They saw a problem and they are actively working to fix it. I could not feel better about
the direction they are headed in!
Refracting for practice:
In the future, I hope to move their interests into inquiry and push those towards more
advocacy work. I also hope to use history in more subject areas because looking at the
past can help us think about the present and look towards the future.
