In Practice Again
Intro We know that we have talked before
about tobacco and smoking but we had
someone in Reyes class last week who
noticed that there were a lot of cigarette
butts outside near the track. They were
concerned because we know from the
asthma friendly school checklist that
cigarette smoke is especially harmful for
people who have asthma. We thought that
this would be a good opportunity to talk
about it again from a historical
perspective.
Presentatio You are always invited to ask questions or
n of even write them down and we can talk
Advertisem about them more later. I dont want any
ents question to go unanswered with this
subject.

Start slide show asking questions such as:

-What do you notice?

-Is there anything that surprises you?
-Why do you think that the artist might
have done that?
-What do you think this is saying?
-Do you agree?
-How have things changed?
-How have things stayed the same?
-How is this relevant for us today?

In the middle of the slide show after the

Smoker's lungs/Non-smokers lungs
slide pass out straws and have students
breathe out of them to feel the constricted
air

Extension Depending on time, Returning to the

dilemma of the cigarette butts What can
we do?

Possible responses:
-Tell people
-Not smoke
-Put up signs

Pass around pieces of paper to make

anti-smoking advertisements or signs
asking people not to smoke.
Reflection What did you think about taking a
historical look at tobacco? How will this
prevent you from using tobacco in the
future?
Reflecting on practice:

The students suggested we put up the anti-smoking advertisements around the track, so
that is what we did. We put them on posters and laminated them, so they could hang
outside. The students felt proud of their work because they are advocates for a cause!
They saw a problem and they are actively working to fix it. I could not feel better about
the direction they are headed in!
Refracting for practice:

In the future, I hope to move their interests into inquiry and push those towards more
advocacy work. I also hope to use history in more subject areas because looking at the
past can help us think about the present and look towards the future.
