TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR)

I. Introduction
There are currently a wide variety of teaching approaches in language teaching

and these help to diversify pedagogical methods that are highly beneficial for

learners in second language acquisition. The Total Physical Response (TPR) is

orginally developed by James Asher, an American professor and psychology and is

viewed as one of the interesting language-teaching approaches for learners

because it is built around coordination of speech and action and it attemps to

teaching language through physical activity. Throughout this paper, the author will

be looking at the advantages and disadvantages of this pedagogical method as well

as exploring implications of this approach in teaching English in Vietnamese ESL

classrooms.

II. Discussion
1. Advantages
There are a number of good points of TPR that are highly beneficial for

English language learners. Firstly, it is fairly memorable and students will find

it easy to absorb words or phrases without encountering any obstacles. In TPR,

the main roles of learners are a listener and a perfomer, so they listen intently

and physically respond to the commands raised by their teacher. By doing that,

the learners will remember the words and stick in their mind much longer

because they are able to visualize the language through their teacher physical

acts related to that word, hence the commands are comprehensible. Krashen, S.

(1998) states that it is an astoundingly successful beginner language teaching

method (or technique). In order to let the learners grab new words effortlessly,

the teacher is not only a director who monitors and observes the learners

responses but also a well organizer that decides what to teach and selects what

materials for the purpose of making the lesson go smoothly and predictably.
Secondly, the ESL classroom environment will become much more open

and dynamic. The main target learners of this language-teaching approach are

mostly teenagers and young learners, so they will actively participate in the

lesson and will make the classroom environment more lively and energetic.

The students will seem motivated that brings tremendous beneficial impacts for

not only their learning but also their energy to language acquisition.
