At Halliburton, we never lose sight of the primary objective

to help you make the best decisions that will yield maximum
payout from your wells.

Check-Shot Surveys
Check-shot surveys are one of the most inexpensive forms
of borehole-seismic services, and the answers they provide
can spell the difference between success and failure.
Geophysicists and geologists can immediately confirm
where their reservoirs are in both time and depth. Check
shots ensure that you gain maximum benefit from the

HAL18509
costly surface-seismic data that you have previously
acquired, and they can quickly point you toward more
intelligent drilling decisions. Time-depth chart from a VSP helps geoscientists determine exact two-
way time of their formations.

Check shots are particularly important when surface seismic

data reveals an amplitude anomaly. These anomalies can
indicate a potential drilling opportunity, but a lack of data
correlating depth to time could require operators to drill
blindly. In these situations, check shots add a new layer of
information to existing surface seismic data and help point
drilling teams toward target zones with the most potential.

We take a different approach from many

of our competitors. Instead of pushing you to try

HAL18510
new ways of acquiring or interpreting
geophysical data, we carefully listen
to what you hope to achieve with your data,
and then we create a plan to make it happen.

Check-Shot Survey Benefits and Applications

Provides accurate time/depth correlation (two-way
time chart)
Offers optional sonic log calibration
Improves accuracy of synthetic seismogram data
Improves velocity analysis for surface seismic processing

VSPs
A VSP provides not only precise velocity information, but it
also produces a much higher-resolution image of the
subsurface in the vicinity of the well than can be obtained
HAL18519

from surface-seismic data. A VSP can help identify a

reservoir target ahead of the bit, and also identify seismic
multiples or confirm that the target has been drilled. Check-shot velocity survey data.

timeframes and total cost.

Offset VSP Benefits and Applications

Produces images away from the well in one or
more directions
Can image thousands of feet from the wellbore in the
direction of the energy source
Generally has twice the image resolution as conventional

Walk-Away VSPs
We can create lateral images of a formation using a technique

seismic display created from these data can help specify the
size, location and fluid saturation levels of a reservoir,
VSP Benefits and Applications defining formation attributes that might otherwise be missed.
Acquires near well corridor stack seismic image
Records compressional and shear seismic wave fields
Offers Q studies of rock attenuation of acoustic energy
Provides accurate time/depth correlation (two-way

Offers sonic log calibration and accurate synthetic
seismograms
Improves velocity analysis for surface-seismic processing
Offers phase matching

Offset VSPs
To properly define formations some distance away from the
wellbore, Halliburton can produce an offset VSP, in one or
more directions away from the wellbore. The process uses a Layer 1
static offset energy source such as a vibroseis unit to acquire
information thousands of feet away from the wellbore. The
final report includes a VSP/CDP transform and a Layer 2

high-resolution 2-D seismic image that can yield important

information about faults and potential lithographical features.
Layer 3
This information can then help operators select the most
promising site to further develop the field.

Halliburton was one of the early pioneers in

geophysical services and we remain an industry
leader today. Operators rely on us to point them
in the right direction, and to help them avoid
making costly mistakes.

Offset VSP data spliced into surface seismic image.

A walk-away VSP can prove especially invaluable in deciding

when and where to develop a field or where to optimize the
sidetracking of an existing well. It opens the door to multi-
fold sampling that increases resolution and improves signal-
to-noise ratio on images above a specific subsurface point. A
walk-awayVSP can also help operators to refine their drilling
plan and maximize payout possibilities from otherwise
marginal reservoirs.

HAL18516
Migrated 3-D VSP data.

Walk-Away VSP Benefits and Applications

Allows acquisition of high-resolution 2-D VSP data
Improves velocity analysis for surface seismic processing
Includes anisotropic, AVO/AVA evaluations

3-D VSPs
Halliburton integrates 3-D VSP data with surface seismic and
well-logging data to define and describe formation properties
and identify other reservoir details with the greatest amount of
resolution. The results give operators a better understanding of
the best ways to exploit the reservoir. Over time, a 3-D VSP can

Amplitude, or strength of wavelet peak and trough, is affected by
offset between energy source (S) and geophone receiver (R).
Phase Matching, Q Estimations
and Anisotropic Evaluations
Measuring the decay of signal amplitude and frequency can
provide an important clue in the hunt for hydrocarbons.
Halliburtons geoscientists can apply five separate techniques to
help improve both the quality and quantity of data. These
include phase matching; Q estimation; and AVO, AVA and
anisotropic evaluations. These data-processing techniques
prove their worth by helping to pinpoint both the presence and
azimuth of fracturing in a formation and by helping to develop
a precise drilling map to maximize potential payout from a
reservoir.

Evaluation Benefits and Applications
Phase Matching
Allows borehole seismic data to be correlated to surface
seismic
Quantifies the phase of the surface seismic Q Estimation
Identifies and compensates for Q to help increase the
accuracy of conclusions
AVO/AVA Evaluation
Helps identify the presence of gas in the formation by
serving as direct hydrocarbon indicators (DHIs)
Anisotropic Evaluation
Measures the difference between fast and slow shear wave
data, which can help indicate a fractured reservoir
Uses borehole seismic to provide anisotropy measurements
