0 INTRODUCTION TO REGGIO EMILIA EDUCATION

1.1 BIOGRAPHY OF REGGIO EMILIA DEVELOPER

The developer of Reggio Emilia is Loris Malaguzzi. Loris Malaguzzi was born in Corregio ,Italy
in 1920. He grew up in Fascist Italy and remembered 6 years of war . He was encouraged by his
father so he decided to enroll in a teaching training course in the year of 1939. He completed it
during the war. In the year of 1946, he enrolled in first postwar psychology course which is
located at Rome. This is the journey of beginning of the Reggio Emilia adventure.
It started in small town named Villa Cella in northem region known as Reggio Romana. The
place is having chaos due to the fall of Fascism and the German retreat from Italy. The villagers
including parents and children had collected sand, stone and timber to build a school. Malaguzzi
rode bicycle to the town to have a look and was so impressed by what he saw.

1.2 HISTORY OF REGGIO EMILLIA APPROACH

Reggio Emilia Approach is an educational philosophy aim on preschool and primary education.
After the war, according to people at there, they believed children needed a different way of
learning. On that year, they decided to open the very first municipal preschool. At that time, Italy
was in a stable economy and also in a social development. Malaguzzi and the parents have their
own personality during early years of development and that children own with a hundred
languages through expression of their ideas.

The motives of this approach is teaching how to use symbolic languages such as sculpting,
painting and acting drama play in everyday life. This education is according to principles of
responsibility, respect and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and
wonderful environment according to children interest through self-guided curriculum.

2.0 PHILOSOPHY OF REGGIO EMILIA EDUCATION

These approaches teach young children to puts the natural development of children and also
close relationships that they share with environment in this philosophy. This early childhood a
program shows the approach of respecting the children as a part of learning process.

A parent is the main asset to the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Parents roles are as collaborators,
partners and supporter for their children. Parents must know their children needs and keep
detailed of childrens activities.

Teacher must respect every childs parent because they are child first teacher and a parent is
always involved in their children life. Most parents choose this because it is like home life
learning and incorporate many of same principles.

2.1 Set of Principles by The Reggio Emilia philosophy .

One of the principles of the philosophy of Reggio Emilia is children must be able to learn how to
express themselves. From what they dislike and like according to their interest. This is to boost
the feeling of children to gain knowledge.

Besides that, children also learn from experiences of observing, listening, touching and moving.
One of the examples is visual learners. A visual learner is learning through observing.
Children like to observe their surrounding such as their parents or teacher body languange and
expressions. From this, the children will learn how to behave their attitude .

As for second learning styles is auditory learners. Children learns through listening. Children
who are actively in listening tend to be more discipline because they know how to gain
knowledge by listening. Thirdly, tactile learners is learning through touching. Children who are
prefer doing activities by using their both hands will allow them be creative in making task that
been ask by teacher. The last type of learners is kinestic learners.

The last principle is a child is recommending having a good relationship with peers and with
material items in the world that children must be allowed to explore. Good relationships with
friends allow them to communicate well with each other. This can boost their confidence level
talking with someone else.

CHAPTER 3.0 THE INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS AND COMMUNITY

3.1 THE ROLES OF ENVIRONMENT.

In Reggio Emilias Early Childhood Program, proper arrangement of environment is important

for children and this usually called as Third teacher. The most important is making the strategy of
new spaces and re-decorate the old one in each classroom with the rest of the school and of
course the school with the surrounding community. From environment, children can create
meaning and make sense of their world through environment support.

The classroom in preschools is basically decorated with plants and with natural light. The
classroom must be open to a centerpiazza, which is like kitchen open view and able to access to
the surrounding community. The entries must use of mirrors and along with children works at the
wall. These features characterize classroom interiors design where displays of activity that had
been done by children. As a solution, a good environment can make the children to boost their
feelings to study without getting bored easily.
Besides that, environment is an ample space for supplies and always changes to attract their
attention to their aesthetic features. Every classroom must be in studio spaces which is the form of a
large and always in designated spaces for large or small group activities. For the whole process of
schooling, this is one of the steps for children to interact with each other.

3.2 THE ROLES OF EDUCATORS

Based from Reggio approaches, educator or teacher is not only as an instructor but also call as
collaborator with children. Advice to teacher is they must make an effort for the childs learning
by making daily planning activities and lesson based on children interest. Teachers must always
ask questions to children because from this we can know whether they understand or not from
our teaching. Teacher also must actively involve in the activity together with the children instead
of only observing the child learning.

3.2.1 DOCUMENTATION

With many choices of media, teachers must give more attention to the documentation and
presentation of the children. Teachers have to listens closely to their children instead of making
judgement about the child. Such as an example of documentation might be a panel or book with
students drawing, words and photographs. From making learning that can be see, teachers can
succeed in making several things. Teachers are able to study the thinking and feeling of the
students in order to understand them. Besides that, documentation help the educators to evaluate
their own work . Last but not least, it gives parents information about their children learning
experience and achievement in school.

CHAPTER 4.0 IMPLEMENTING REGGIO EMILIA METHOD TO CHILDREN

The founder and director of municipal preschools of Reggio Emillia is Loris Malaguzzi. He
passed away two decades ago and we know he would be very pleased with the progress early
childhood education. It have made toward understanding his pedagogical lessons. He believed
that not so much we need to think of the child who develop himself but other than a child who
develops himself interacting and developing with others.

A proper environment is needed for a lesson which is responsible to the needs for teacher and
children to create learning together. By fostering creativity through the work of young hands
manipulating objects or making art is an environment that reflects the values we want to
communicate to children. To foster a wonderful environment, teacher must go deeper than what
its like and develop more understanding of childrens thinking and curiosities.

Teacher must always provide every learning space has paper and writing instruments. The
imaginary spaces within the classrooms and the playground outside, children will actively
writing and drawing. It is the part of learning and also the process that has connections within the
group. We must have a conscious effort to steer away from purchasing ready-made materials
such as rubber stamps and instead spend resources on paper, clipboards and multiple forms of
writing and drawing tools. Teachers must ask children to draw what they see and then revisit the
subject in more detail. Rather than instructing the children, teachers must set up provocation
and then take a step back.

CHAPTER 5.0 BENEFITS OF REGGIO EMILIA EDUCATION

There are so many benefits we can gain from Reggio Emilia Education. One of the benefits of
these approaches is that this program is adaptive and not focused on a specific curriculum
sequence for reading and writing. Instead it is a child-focused curriculum. This is adapted to
daily expressed interest and the needs of a caregiver group of children.

Language is a symbol through art and other expressive means to help to give children a solid
basis through expressing themselves properly. This is to support more formal teaching.

Those needs are explored with the children and then passed by the caregiver through a wide
range of activities. The activities is referring to play ,art, audio and exercise. This program
emphasis on safe experiences and interactions and exploration of nature and science for the
whole year.

CONCLUSION

Based on our knowledge about Reggio Emilia education, it shows that this approach is important
for our future generation. This approach does challenge some conceptions of teacher competence
and developmentally appropriate practice. Such as a teacher must have strategy on purposely to
allow mistakes to happen. Another character is that this education is importance of the child
ability to communicate well with peers.

The most difficult aspects of this approach is the multiple points of view based on childrens
interest, needs and abilities. Parents and teachers must work together to contribute successful
ways to determinations of the school experiences for successful future generation.

Educators must trust themselves to respond the childrens ideas and interest. They trust children
to be interested in things that worth it to know. Parents must be informed and productive
members of a together educational team.

This will give a fantastic result for all of us. We want our children to be successful so lets start
working from now on.
