3. Composition/information on ingredients

Components CAS # Percent

Heavy fuel oil 64741-45-3
Heavy fuel oil 64741-57-7 100
Residues (petroleum), vacuum 64741-56-6

Composition comments The product contains more than 95 wt% hydrocarbons and less than 5 wt% sulfur and nitrogen. The
concentration of sulfur in the product is equal or more than 0.5 wt%. Small amount of hydrogen
sulfide, a highly toxic gas, may be present, especially in the headspace of containers.

4. First aid measures

First aid procedures
Inhalation Move to fresh air. Keep victim warm. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention
if discomfort develops or persists.
Skin contact Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with soap and water. In case of rashes, wounds or other
skin disorders: Seek medical attention and bring along these instructions.
Eye contact Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove any contact lenses and
open eyes wide apart. Get medical attention if irritation persists after washing.
Ingestion Rinse mouth thoroughly. Keep victim under observation. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs,
keep head low so that stomach content doesn't get into the lungs. Get medical attention.
Symptoms and hazardous Irritation of eyes and mucous membranes. Skin irritation. Swallowing may caus gastrointestinal
effects irritation. Hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic gas, may be present. Signs and symptoms of overexposure
to hydrogen sulfide include respiratory and eye irritation, dizziness, nausea, coughing, a sensation of
dryness and pain in the nose, and loss of consciousness. Odor does not provide a reliable indicator of
the presence of hazardous levels in the atmosphere.
General advice Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Refer to the Emergency Response Procedures for Ships
Carrying Dangerous Goods (EmS Guide) and the Medical First Aid Guide for Use in Accidents
Involving Dangerous Goods (MFAG) as necessary.
Notes to physician Treat symptomatically. The effects might be delayed.

5. Fire-fighting measures
Suitable extinguishing media Water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide.
Extinguishing media which Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.
must not be used for safety
reasons
Specific hazards Thermal decomposition may produce smoke, oxides of carbon and lower molecular weight organic

compounds whose composition have not been characterized. Sulphur Oxides (SOx). Nitrogen Oxides
(NOx).
Special protective equipment Selection of respiratory protection for fire fighting: follow the general fire precautions indicated in the
for fire-fighters workplace. Self-contained breathing apparatus, operated in positive pressure mode and full protective
clothing must be worn in case of fire.
Fire fighting Move container from fire area if it can be done without risk. Use water spray to cool unopened
equipment/instructions containers. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out.

6. Accidental release measures

Personal precautions Stay upwind. Eliminate all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area).
Avoid contact with skin. Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection. For personal
protection, see section 8 of the MSDS. In case of spills, beware of slippery floors and surfaces.
Environmental precautions Prevent spreading over a wide area (e.g. by containment or oil barriers). Do not contaminate water.
Contact local authorities in case of spillage to drain/aquatic environment.
Methods for cleaning up Stop the flow of material, if this is without risk. Dike the spilled material, where this is possible.
Small Spills: Absorb spillage with non-combustible, absorbent material.
Large Spills: Remove with vacuum trucks or pump to storage/salvage vessels. Use a
non-combustible material like vermiculite, sand or earth to soak up the product and place into a
container for later disposal. Wash area with soap and water. Ensure that waste and contaminated
materials are collected and removed from the work area as soon as possible in a suitably labeled
container.

7. Handling and storage

Handling Access to work area should be restricted to people handling the product only. Should be handled in
closed systems, if possible. Caution! Vapors may be present in the headspace of closed containers.
Ventilate after opening. The inherent toxic and olfactory (sense of smell) fatiguing properties of
hydrogen sulfide require that air monitoring alarms be used if concentrations are expected to reach
harmful levels, such as in enclosed spaces, heated transport vessels and spill or leak situations. If the air
concentration exceeds 10 ppm, the area should be evacuated unless respiratory protection is in use. Avoid
inhalation of vapors/mist and contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Immediately change contaminated clothes. Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof equipment. Do
not eat, drink or smoke when using the product. Be aware of potential for surfaces to become slippery.
Observe good industrial hygiene practices.
Storage Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Store in a cool, dry place with adequate ventilation. Keep
away from incompatible materials, open flames, and high temperatures. Keep away from food, drink and
animal feeding stuffs. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, solder, drill, grind or expose empty containers to heat,
flame, sparks, static electricity, or other sources of ignition.

8. Exposure controls/personal protection

Occupational exposure limits
ACGIH
Components Type Value Form
Hydrogen sulfide (7783-06-4) STEL 15 ppm
TWA 10 ppm
Residues (petroleum), vacuum (64741-56-6) TWA 0.5 mg/m3 Inhalable fraction

Engineering controls ACGIH Threshold Limit Values for mineral oil mist:
The 8-Hour Exposure Limit (TLV-TWA) is 5 mg/m3. The 15-minute STEL is 10 mg/m3.
Provide adequate ventilation and minimize the risk of inhalation of vapors and oil mist. Provide
easy access to water supply and eye wash facilities. Use explosion-proof equipment.
