CLP 302 Mass Transfer and Fluid Particle Mechanics

Lab
II Semester 2016-2017

Course content
Six mass transfer experiments and six fluid particle mechanics experiments will be
conducted in groups of 4 students each.

Mass Transfer (UG Lab)

1. Vapor liquid equilibrium

2. Mass transfer with and without chemical reaction

3. Adsorption in packed bed

4. Wetted wall column

5. Mass transfer coefficient measurement + 6. Diffusion coefficient measurement

(Single turn for both)

Fluid Particle Mechanics (UG Lab)

1. Blaines apparatus for surface area measurement

2. Flow through packed bed

3. Fluidization

4. Sedimentation analysis

5. Sieve analysis

6. Stokes drag law

Evaluations:
- Lab reports: 30%

- Session evaluation (viva/quiz & lab discipline with inputs from TAs and lab
assistants): 30%
- End-Semester quiz: 40%

- One FPM or MT experiment design (bonus): 10%

Lab report:
Each group (40-45 students) will be divided into about 10-11 sub-groups of 4
members. Single report needs to be submitted by each sub-group.

Lab report must be submitted in the same turn or the next turn after the
experiment is performed. Late submissions may invite penalty. It is expected that
each team member has contributed to the report writing and each team
member must know what the report contains.

The report must contain the objective and the theoretical background written in
own language, sample calculation (absolutely must), quality graphs, detailed
discussion and analysis of findings, error analysis and scope for further
improvement. The reading sheet signed by lab instructor/TA must be attached with
the report.

Other instructions:
Performance evaluation of an experiment performed comprises of viva as well as
lab discipline and punctuality for that experiment.

If you miss any experiment, you can perform the experiment during the make-up
session towards the end of the semester.

An F grade will be awarded for serious undisciplined behavior or for unsafe

practices in lab or for cheating or using unfair means in end-semester quiz/session
quiz.

You must wear shoes and lab coats in the lab; otherwise you will not be
allowed to perform the experiments.

Absolutely no cell phone use is permitted inside the lab.

You are supposed to clean the experimental setup before leaving the lab.
Not cleaning the setup may result in zero marks for the session.
