1. GENERAL.

The radio altimeter (RA) system measures the vertical distance from the
airplane to the ground. The radio altitude shows in the flight compartment.
The system has a range of -20 to 2500 feet. The flight crew and other airplane
systems use the altitude during low altitude flight, approach and landing.

The radio altimeter system has two receiver/transmitters.

Each receiver/transmitter has a transmit and a receive antenna.

The receiver/transmitters get discrete inputs from the air ground relays.
Radio altitude data goes on ARINC 429 data buses to these components :

- Flight control computers (FCC).

- Autothrottle computer.
- Ground proximity warning computer (GPWC).
- Flight data acquisition unit (FDAU).
- Traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) computer.
- Common display system (CDS) display electronic units (DEU).

These are the radio altimeter program pins :

Indicator Discrete.
The indicator discrete supplies status of flight compartment radio altitude
indicators. This system does not use radio altitude indicators.

4. SYSTEM DETAILED DESCRIPTION.

RA Receiver/Transmitter.
The RA receiver/transmitter calculates radio altitude and has a nonvolatile
memory which stores fault information. Only shop personnel read the
nonvolatile memory information.

These are the operation limits of the receiver/transmitter

- Frequency = 4235 MHz to 4365 MHz.

- Transmit power = 500 mW nominal.
- Operating range = -20 to 2500 feet.

There are two switches and an LCD on the front panel of the RA receiver/
transmitter. You use any of the two switches to start a test of the RA receiver/
transmitter. The LCD shows the test results.

There is a memory card slot on the front of the RA receiver/ transmitter.

Shop personnel use this slot to put in a flash memory card which loads
software into the LRU. A memory card can also keep LRU condition data
sent by the LRU during operation. These features are not for use by line
maintenance personnel.

Shop personnel use the RS 232 connector to connect shop test equipment to
the LRU. This feature is not for use by line maintenance personnel.

RF Processing. Input Program Pins.

The altitude calculation starts with a signal in the RF processor. The frequency The system select program pin input sets the system modulation rate and

make a difference frequency. The difference frequency is in proportion to the When grounded, the continuous data program pin selects non-interrupted RA

command to the main processor and the radio altimeter fails.

BITE Logic.
The built-in test equipment (BITE) logic monitors the circuits in the RA receiver/
transmitter for faults. The BITE logic faults are stored in a nonvolatile fault
memory card.

The air/ground relay supplies a discrete signal to the main processor. This
discrete defines flight legs for the nonvolatile fault memory.

not permit the antenna to send or receive RF signals. - A radio minimums reset (RST) switch.

Radio minimums is the same as decision height. You use the minimums
reference selector to set the radio minimums or the minimum descent altitude
(MDA).

To set a radio minimums value, use the rotary switch to adjust the decision
height between -1 feet and +999 feet.

Push the radio minimums reset (RST) switch to set the radio minimums alert
display back to normal.

The MDA function does not have a relation to the radio altimeter operation.

Display Unit.
The display unit (DU) shows radio altitude and radio minimums values.
The flight crew uses this data during an approach and a landing.

Radio altitude shows in white for airplane altitude between -20 and 2500 feet.
This is when the radio altitude values update:

- Two foot increments from -20 to 100 feet.

- Ten foot increments from 1 00 to 500 feet.
RA ANTENNA - Twenty foot increments from 500 to 2500 feet.
