1. GENERAL.
The radio altimeter (RA) system measures the vertical distance from the
airplane to the ground. The radio altitude shows in the flight compartment.
The system has a range of -20 to 2500 feet. The flight crew and other airplane
systems use the altitude during low altitude flight, approach and landing.
The receiver/transmitters get discrete inputs from the air ground relays.
Radio altitude data goes on ARINC 429 data buses to these components :

Indicator Discrete.
The indicator discrete supplies status of flight compartment radio altitude
indicators. This system does not use radio altitude indicators.

RA Receiver/Transmitter.
The RA receiver/transmitter calculates radio altitude and has a nonvolatile
memory which stores fault information. Only shop personnel read the
nonvolatile memory information.
There are two switches and an LCD on the front panel of the RA receiver/
transmitter. You use any of the two switches to start a test of the RA receiver/
transmitter. The LCD shows the test results.
Shop personnel use the RS 232 connector to connect shop test equipment to
the LRU. This feature is not for use by line maintenance personnel.

command to the main processor and the radio altimeter fails.
BITE Logic.
The built-in test equipment (BITE) logic monitors the circuits in the RA receiver/
transmitter for faults. The BITE logic faults are stored in a nonvolatile fault
memory card.
The air/ground relay supplies a discrete signal to the main processor. This
discrete defines flight legs for the nonvolatile fault memory.

Radio minimums is the same as decision height. You use the minimums
reference selector to set the radio minimums or the minimum descent altitude
(MDA).
To set a radio minimums value, use the rotary switch to adjust the decision
height between -1 feet and +999 feet.
Push the radio minimums reset (RST) switch to set the radio minimums alert
display back to normal.
The MDA function does not have a relation to the radio altimeter operation.
Display Unit.
The display unit (DU) shows radio altitude and radio minimums values.
The flight crew uses this data during an approach and a landing.
Radio altitude shows in white for airplane altitude between -20 and 2500 feet.
This is when the radio altitude values update:

The radio altitude does not show above 2500 feet. Each of these procedures sets the radio minimums alert back to normal :
The white radio altitude shows digitally on the DU for altitudes between -20 - Push the reset (RST) switch on the EFIS control panel
and 2500 feet. For altitudes between 0 and 1000 feet, a round dial shows - The airplane climbs to 75 feet above the radio minimums value
around the digital display. The dial has increments that show 100 feet. - The airplane lands.
As the radio altitude increases or decreases, the display adds or removes the
perimeter of the dial. A green radio minimums bug moves around the dial and When radio minimums is set to normal, the radio altitude and the radio

green.
The green radio minimums display shows above the digital radio altitude
display. The radio minimums display does not show for these reasons : Rising Runway.

- Radio minimums reset switch is pushed.
- Radio minimums value is less than zero. - Radio altitude is less than 2500 feet.
- ILS localizer deviation shows on the ADI.
The green radio minimums display shows above the digital radio altitude
display when the airplane is on the ground, or when radio altitude is more The rising runway symbol moves towards the airplane symbol on the ADI as
than 1000 feet. If the radio minimums value is less than zero feet, the display the airplane altitude decreases from 200 feet to 0 feet. At 0 feet, the rising

The test switches on the front of the RA receiver/transmitter start an RA self- These are the selections that can show above the receiver front panel switches
test. The LCD shows the results of the self-test. The self-tests do a check of during the test sequence :
these :

- Receiver/transmitter internal status. and discrete interface status
- ARINC 429 output transmitters status. - RETURN: This selection causes the display to go back to the start test
- Antennas and coaxial cables. page

follow.
Push one of the test switches on the front of the receiver to start a test of the
radio altimeter system. The BITE does a check of internal transceiver operation The front panel BITE test causes the RA receiver/ transmitter to send a test
and of its interfaces. The test results show on the LCD on the front of the altitude to the flight compartment display units. The test altitude is 40 feet.
transceiver. The test altitude shows during the full test. The altitude display goes back to
normal when the test is complete.
When you push the test switch, the TEST IN PROGRESS page shows and the
transceiver goes through a selftest. The test continues for approximately 5
seconds. A 5 second scale shows at the bottom of the page. You can monitor
the test time by the line of Xs that come into view below the scale.
The TEST COMPLETE NO FAILURES display shows for a test pass condition.
The TEST COMPLETE FAILURES display shows for a test fail condition.
