EMENTA
A disciplina Ingls Instrumental para os Cursos Tcnicos tem como objetivo central
ministrar ensino de qualidade, visando a formao do cidado crtico com competncias e
habilidades adequadas s necessidades do mundo do trabalho, bem como fornecer base para
a formao dos discentes/leitores de lngua estrangeira (Ingls), no que concerne a leitura,
compreenso e interpretao de textos tcnicos em Lngua Inglesa, objetivando atingir a
somatria da qualidade no s tcnica mas tambm humana no processo ensino-
aprendizagem.
OBJETIVO DA DISCIPLINA
METODOLOGIA
Utilizao de uma abordagem comunicativa (Communicative Approach), bem como a
utilizao de vrios mtodos e tcnicas, como por exemplo o English for Especific Purpose
ESP, que possam facilitar o desenvolvimento da prtica pedaggica do docente e tornar mais
diversificada a assimilao de conhecimentos dos discentes, com nfase em leitura Reading,
em metodologias como:
I. Aulas expositivas, abordagem instrumental utilizando as tcnicas de leitura para fim
especfico;
II. Seminrios, exerccios de fixao, leituras de textos tcnicos (*) e debates;
III. Utilizao das tecnologias que podem e devem ser utilizadas no ensino de lnguas
estrangeiras;
* Ler os textos para compreender e retirar as suas idias centrais.
CONTEDO PROGRAMTICO
O contudo a ser ministrado nesta disciplina abrange as Estratgias de Leitura (Reading
Strategies), Leitura e Compreenso (Reading and Comprehension), Estruturas e
Desenvolvimento do Pargrafo (Structure and Development Paragraph), Manual de Composio
(Guided Composition).

PRIMEIRO PASSO
Quando encontrar uma palavra desconhecida, voc no deve se preocupar
primeiro com o seu significado. Primeiro, veja se a palavra ou no importante no
texto. (Verificando se ela uma palavra-chave (Key Word), uma palavra que se repete
vrias vezes e de diversas formas (Repeated Words), ou se a ausncia dessa palavra
de grande importncia para a compreenso da sentena).
Como descobrir?
contexto seria as palavras vizinhas, mais tudo que j deu para entender no
texto.
Muitas vezes, possvel adivinhar o que determinada palavra h de significar,
pelo que j se entendeu.
1. Primeiro, olhe com mais ateno as palavras vizinhas na mesma sentena. Muitas
vezes j ser bvio o significado da palavra desconhecida;
2. Se isso no funcionar, procure raciocinar usando tudo que j deu para captar no texto.
Veja se a palavra consiste de vrias partes (prefixos e sufixos), verificando se uma

dessas partes so cognatas. Olhe os aspctos tipogrficos do texto: as figuras, ttulos,
pontuao, etc., pois eles podem fornecer dicas teis;
3. Agora, se ainda no deu para entender a palavra, e se voc ainda considera importante
entend-la, procure no dicionrio ou consulte algum.

Tpico um termo geral que, comumente, pode ser representado por poucas
palavras. A tcnica skimming consiste em olhar rapidamente o texto, numa breve

objetivo.

As palavras que cercam a palavra few proporcionam dicas para o significado da mesma. O que
temos que fazer ento para descobrir o significado da palavra inferir o seu significado utilizando
o contexto em que ela se encontra. Ou seja, analyses, plant e species so palavraas cognatas
(sobre cognate words, veja mais adiante) . Deste modo, so palavras que se parecem com
palavras em portugus e, portanto, tm o seu significado igual ao portugus. J a palavra hundred
um numeral, o que importa em uma idia de nmero.

A utilizao do contexto bem como do dicionrio, s vezes, torna-se desnecessria quando o
prprio autor do texto menciona o significado da palavra que estamos tentando encontrar o
significado. For example: In the human body these constitute 99.9 per cent of the total number of
atoms present but just four of them - carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen - correspond to 99
per cent of that total.
Mais do que qualquer outra abilidade, reconhecer a idia principal leva a uma boa compreenso
da leitura. A pergunta bsica que devemos fazer quando estamos lendo : "Qual o ponto
principal que o autor do texto est tentando apontar?"
Para descobrir qual o ponto principal, ou idia principal do texto, recomenda-se determinar em
primeiro lugar qual o assunto/tpico (topic) que est sendo discutido (Para descobrir o tpico de
um texto podemos utilizar a estratgia Skimming ).
Ento, devemos responder primeiro: Qual o assunto/tpico do texto "1. The chemical elements
in biology"?, para em seguida responder qual a idia principal, pois o resto do texto contem
idias que servem de suporte para essa idia principal. A idia principal nem sempre vem escrita
no texto. Desse modo, temos que construir uma sentena que expresse essa idia principal.
Quando j existe no texto uma sentena que expressa a idia principal, a esta chamamos de Topic
Sentence.
Para sabermos qual a sentena tpico do texto, basta perguntar: " esta a idia que est sendo
amparada pelas outras sentenas neste pargrafo? "

fundamentalmente).

REPEATED WORDS: so aquelas palavras que se repetem com a mesma, ou diferente, funo
ou forma dentro do texto. Ao observarmos as palavras repetidas racionamos tempo, que um fator
singular em leitura de textos. Essa observao ajuda-nos a encontrar as palavra que so chave
dentro do prprio texto, mais conhecidas como key words.
KEY WORDS: so palavras que se referem mais especificamente ao assunto principal do texto,
tais como: sujeitos especficos e palavras que ocorrem frequentemente dentro de um texto (por
exemplo, se o texto fala sobre FUTEBOL, palavras como win, lose, ball, etc., tero uma certa
frequncia). Elas podem aparecer repetidas e/ou com diversas terminaes. Por exemplo, podem
ser consideradas como palavras repetidas no texto "1. The chemical elements in biology", as
palavras: natural, natural elements, elements, elements, elements, elements, elements, element,
species, species, plant, plant, animal , animal, chemical, chemical, chemical, chemical, systems,
systems, systems, systems, biological, biological, biological, biological, million, million, hundred,
hundred, among,among, amongst, energy, energy, selection, selection. At aqui, se pode observar
que poucas palavras no so chaves, como por exemplo "among". As outras palavras ou so

READING
Analysis has shown that only eleven elements appear to be approximately constant and
predominant in all biological systems. In the human body these constitute 99.9 per cent of the total

sublinhadas um nominal group/grupo nominal, porque possui um ncleo (headword): species; e
modificadores (modifiers): a, few, hundred plant.
Para compreender o significado dos grupos de nomes, devemos entende-lo como um todo, pois
todas as palavras que compem todo o grupo de nomes apresentam uma relao de dependncia
umas com as outras. Alm disso, a ordem do grupo nominal em Ingls primeiro os seus
modificadores e por ltimo o ncleo.

PREDICTION
A Prediction a atividade pela qual o leitor levado a predizer, inferir o contedo de um texto
atravs do ttulo ou de outros elementos tipogrficos, como ilustraes, por exemplo.
Sendo uma estratgia do tipo pr-leitura, a prediction contribui para estimular o interesse e a
curiosidade do leitor pelo contedo de um texto que o tpico sugere.
Quanto mais cultura geral (Background Knowledge), tiver o leitor, mais fcil ser a Prediction.
Como exemplo, vejamos o ttulo "Ecologia". Um leitor com um conhecimento razovel poderia
ordinariamente predizer sobre o assunto palavras como:
Estas palavras poderiam at no fazer parte do texto, mas muito provvel que o fizessem.
Ecology
Tomando por base os exemplos acima, pergunte-se se seria capaz de fazer algo parecido a partir
de ttulos como "Nuclear War", "Education in Brazil", "Inflation"... claro que a sua cultura exerce
um papel importante nessa atividade.

On March 11, 1985, with the death of President Konstantin Tchernenko, Mikhail Gorbachev came
to power.
The Secretary General of the Communist Party would become the biggest personality on the world
political scene of the 1980's. A new era began for the Soviet Union. After a long period of political
stagnation under Leonid Brezhnev (1964 - 1982) the Soviets began to see the light at the end of
the tunel.
Perestroika (reconstruction) and Glasnost (transparency) became key word, resulting in a series of
measures such as political, cultural and economic freedom, campaigns against corruption and an
inefficient administration, and the replacement of veteran communists in favor of a new generation
of Soviets.
The Soviet Union definitively opened its doors to the world. Eventhough conservatives have been
critical, the reforms continue and Gorbachev little by little gained support form the most important
faction: the people.
On December 26, 1987, after a long meeting, Reagan and Gorbachev signed an accord to limit
missiles, and nuclear disarmament began to turn into reality.
Since then the world hasn't stopped applauding the decade's greatest political leader.

Linking Words
So palavras que tm a funo de unir oraes e mostrar o relacionamento entre as idias nas
mesmas.
As linking words transmitem idias de adio, alternncia, concluso, resultado, oposio, reforo,
condio, etc.
Podem ser classificados como Linking Words as conjunes, os pronomes relativos e as
preposies.
Relative Pronouns
So as palavras: who, whom, which, and that. A funo de um pronome relativo ligar uma
orao subordinada orao principal.
That como um pronome relativo nunca tem uma preposio antes dele.
e.g.: This is the person that Annie was talking about.
Which no usado para sujeitos ou objetos humanos.
e.g.: That is the car which she has just bought.
Who and whom so restritos a antecedentes humanos.
e.g.: He introduced me to his friend, who had just returned from China.
A forma objeto do pronome relativo usada como o objeto de um verbo ou uma preposio.
e.g.: The late Principal of the College, whom we all remember with affection, left this bursary in
her will;
I discovered whom he was visiting.

Prepositions
As preposies capacitam-nos a:
expressar movimento para ou de um lugar;
expressar localizao e tempo.
Uma preposio necessita de um objeto tanto quanto um verbo transitivo necessita. Uma
preposio e um substantivo frasal que seque a preposio. Uma frase preposicional utilizada
como um adverbial ou um postmodifier:
He put the flowers on the table.
The house on the corner has at last been sold.
As preposies combinam com alguns verbos para formar novos significados derivados desta
combinao. Estes so os phrasal verbs: I believe in his innocence.
Quando um verbo seguido pro uma preposio h sempre pouca ou nenhuma escolha de qual
usar: Rely on, speak to, give to.
Quando h chances de escolha da preposio o significado muda: check for, check on, check over;
speak to, speak about; talk to, talk with, etc.
As preposies permitem-nos expressar relaes. Isto ocorre mais com tempo e lugar. Algumas
preposies podem ser usadas com mais de um significado, dependendo de como ns pensamos
a respeito do tempo ou lugar que estamos discutindo.

estando em determinado pondo: on, at, by, near...

As preposies de tempo podem indicar:
um ponto no tempo ou data: at, on, in...

um perodo ou ponto do tempo que marca uma mudana: before, after, since, until... e.g.: We

a durao de algum evento: for.

e HOW OFTEN.
Position of adverbs
e.g.: He was reading a book calmly in his room last night.
- Os chamados frequency adverbs (always, never, ever, often, frequently, generally, usually,
sometimes, hardly ever, seldom, rarely, etc.), so sempre colocados antes do verbo, exceto TO
BE. Se houver mais de um verbo no predicado, o FREQUENCY ADVERB ser colocado aps o
primeiro verbo auxiliar.
e.g.: He has always spoken English.
The fisherman could often catch his fish without any problems.
Obs.: para dar enfase, alguns advrbios podem ser colocados no inicio de uma sentena. Nesse
caso, deve-se observar a inverso na forma verbal.
e.g.: No sooner had he caught the big fish than the shark appeared.

Contextual Reference
Normalmente existem nos textos elementos de referncia que so empregados para evitar repeties
de palavras e para interliagar as sentenas, tornando a leitura mais compreensivel e fluente.
Esses elementos aparecem na forma de pronomes diversos:
Pessoais: he, she, it, I, we, you, they (direct) e me, you, him, her, it, us, them (indirect)
Demonstrativos: this, that, these, those, such, etc.
Relativos; who, whom, whose, which, that.
Possessivos: mine, yours, theirs, ours, his, hers, its.
Adjetivos possessivos: his, her, our, my, your, it.
Pronomes reflexivos: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, oneself, ourselves, yourselves,
themselves.
Interrogativos: who, what, which, whose, whom, when, why, how, how much (many, far, often,
long, etc)
Indefinido: someone, no one, anyone, everyone, somebody, nobody, anybody, everybody,
something, nothing, anything, everything, others, several, many, all, Enough, either, neither, both,
some, none, etc...

Este tipo de leitura acontece quando o leitor , ao final da leitura, pra e reflete sobre tudo
que o texto lhe transmitiu. A partir desta anlise, iniciamos um processo de avaliao do
texto o qual onde verificamos: a) a importncia do texto para ns; b) at que ponto o
texto nos transmitiu algo de novo; c) de que modo o texto nos foi apresentado (de modo
objetivo, profundo, confuso, etc.); d) se h concordncia de nossa parte a respeito das
idias do autor ou no; e) se h algo que possamos acrescentar s informaes obtidas

Grammar
Passive Voice (voz passiva)
e.g.: Jules Verne wrote From the Earth to the Moon in 1865. (active voice)
From the Earth to the Moon was written by Jules Verne in 1865. (passive voice)
As sentenas que possuem objeto, complemento nominal, podem ser colocadas na voz passiva.
A voz passiva formada com o verbo auxiliar TO BE + o participio passado do verbo principal
da sentena
No exemplo dado anteriormente, o objeto da sentena na voz activa (From the Earth to the
Moon o paciente da ao), torna-se o sujeito da sentena na Voz Passiva;
O sujeito da sentena na Voz Ativa (Jules Verne o agente da sentena), toma o lugar do objeto
precedido pela preposio by;
Quando o agente vago, sem importancia, ou at desconhecido, por exemplo: tehy, somebody,
people. Etc), ele no mencionado.
e.g.: They launched Vernes spacecraft form Cape Town, Florida.
Vernes spacecraft was launched by them from Cape Town, Florida.
Note:
no caso dos verbos com dois objetos (complementos verbais), geralmente o
objeto indireto torna-se o sujeito na passiva. possvel, tambm, utilizar o objeto
direto como sujeito na voz passiva. Mas, isto feito quando queremos enfatizar o
objeto direto.
e.g.: Sub. V. ind. obj dir. obj. complement
Somebody gave me a comb for birthday!
A negativa formada na Voz Passiva pela insero da particula de negao not depois do verbo
auxiliar.
e.g.: The book was not written by Hemingway.
A formao da interrogativa na Voz Passiva feita pela colocao do verbo auxiliar antes do
sujeito.
e.g.: Was the book written by Hemingway?

o processo de formao de palavras que se caracteriza pela colocao de afixos que se
somam ao radical da palavra para formar derivaes ou at graus de significados que se
possa dar a esta palavra que est sendo modificada como a afixao.
