AOE 3104 Homework #4

Due: 20 March 2017 (Turn in during class or to 205 Randolph by 6:00 PM.)

Problem 1. A single-engine aircraft weighing 6000 lbs has had an engine failure at 30,000 ft on a
standard day. The aspect ratio is AR = 7 and the wingspan is b = 40 ft. The drag parameter values are
CD0 = 0.02 and K = 0.08. Estimate the best glide range and the best glide endurance in still air. State
your assumptions clearly.

Problem 2. A general aviation aircraft has the following properties:

AR = 6, S = 150 ft2 , CD0 = 0.02, e = 0.85.

The maximum weight is 3500 lbs, including the full fuel capacity of 50 gallons (at a fuel density of 5.64
lb/gallon). The power specific fuel consumption is p = 0.4 (lbfuel /hr)/hp. The engine produces a maximum
of 350 hp at sea level conditions and the propeller efficiency is P = 0.85. Calculate the maximum range
and the maximum endurance (at constant altitude and constant angle of attack) in standard, sea level
conditions.

Problem 3. A business jet has the following parameter values

b = 45 ft, S = 300 ft2 , CD0 = 0.015, e = 0.9.

The weight is 25,000 lbs and each of the twin engines can produce a maximum 3000 lb of thrust at sea
level. Find the maximum climb rate (in fpm) and the corresponding climb angle (in degrees). Also find
the maximum climb angle and the corresponding climb rate.

Problem 4. For the business jet in Problem 3, the maximum weight includes the full fuel capacity of 1000
gallons (at a fuel density of 6.67 lb/gal). The weight-specific fuel consumption is t = 0.75 (lbfuel /hr)/lbthrust .
Find the maximum range (in statute miles) and the maximum endurance (in hours) at sea level (constant
altitude) for flight at a constant angle of attack.
