Community fund seeks grant applicants

The Directors of the Montcalm Pan-
handle Community Fund are very pleased
to announce that they will soon be issu-
ing their 2010 grant award(s). This year’s
grant award will be to one or more orga-
nizations and is estimated to be approxi-
mately $3,000 in total . Last years grants
were given to Stillwater Ministry for $750
and to the history room project for the
Reynolds Township Library for $1,250.
The Montcalm Panhandle Community
Fund is a local sub-fund of the Green-
ville Area Community Foundation but all
funds are retained within the local com-
munity. The fund qualifies as a commu-
nity foundation and all contribution to the
Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund
receive very favorable state and federal
tax treatment.
The fund began in 1999 and has now
achieved a fund balance in excess of
$80,000. Over $10,000 in prior grant
awards have been given to a variety of
school and community organizations.
This year’s grant award is expected to
be announced in early September with the
disbursement of the grant to occur later
this year. In order to be considered for
the grant request, a written application
is required. To receive this paperwork

The Montcalm Panhandle Community
Fund is intended to create a growing and
lasting legacy in the local community. It
serves the four townships in the Mont-
calm Panhandle; Reynolds, Winfield,

to enhance the quality of life in the com-
munity through the support of education,
recreation, art, and other cultural and

tian music. Formerly a start-
ing tight end for the Cincinnati
Bengals and the Indianapolis
Colts, this Super Bowl winning
player is known for his faith both
on and off the field. Ben’s debut
album with Stylos Records in-
troduced him as a singer and as
a musician to the world. Full of
passion, depth and an insight to
the struggles of faith and life, his
songs provoke an honesty and
sensitivity that tap directly into

Hometown Heroes —
Pvt. Christopher L. McCambridge
Army National Guard Pvt. Christopher L. McCambridge has
graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia,
S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the
Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness,
and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, mili-
tary weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and
ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed
combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military
justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training ex-
ercises.
McCambridge is the son of Kim Forton of Newaygo

Army Reserve Pvt. Jacob M. Pinkerton has graduated from

For several years now, Bill “Hokie Pokie” Ross, has been
taking care of the fishing needs of the Veterans at their Veter-
ans Home in Grand Rapids. He has provided the Veterans with

children’s show
The adventure features Mowgli (Tailor Mast) a boy
raised by wolves in the jungle with the help of his friends,
Baloo the bear (Brittany VanderVegte), Bagheera the pan-
ther (Madee Seabrook), and Kaa the python ( Alexsia Boy-
er).
The fierce tiger Sher Khan (Destiny VanDerWeide)
threatens to remove Father Wolf (Michael Groenke) from
the throne. The wolves (Summer and Autym Groenke), the
monkeys (Shelby VanderVegte, Kenzie Keith, and Grace
Krick), the mongoose (Buck Seabrook), jackal (Rose Burk-
holder) and the peacock (Bo Seabrook) all get involved.
With help from the village people, especially Nyra the sto-
ryteller (Victoria Kolenda) the story unfolds.
Jungle Book will be held at the Stage Door Theatre, 1147
Wilcox, in White Cloud on July 16, 17, 23 and 24. Evening
shows are at 7 p.m. and Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. Ad-
mission is $5.00 for all ages. Bring a new stuffed animal or
animal themed blanket to donate to the Newaygo County
PCA (Prevention of Child Abuse).

OBITUARY
Beatrice Marie
Winter
Beatrice Marie Winter (Schuitema)
age 90 of Cedar Springs, passed away
Thursday, July 1, 2010, and is now rest-
ing peacefully in the arms of her Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born
in March 1920, and was the eldest of
the eight children of Louella and Dorris
Schuitema. Beat was preceded in death
by her husband Ben in 1976, a newborn
in 1942, a sister-in-law Patricia in 1991,
a brother Blaine in 2003, a brother-in-
law Bud in 2007. Beat (Granny) will be
remembered for her love of the out-of-
doors with never enough trees, shrubs,
and flowers surrounding her home. Her
rendition of the “Happy Birthday” mel-
ody and singing that last high note will
be long remembered by all who heard
it. She is survived by a daughter Sharon
(Sam) Butler, grandchildren Kim (Jeff)
Miller, Gwen (Mike) Hancock, Nathan-
iel (Tricia) Butler, great-grandchildren
Hilary, Justin, Alyssa, Kaleigh, Cody,
Shayna, Paige and Cameron, great-
great grandchildren Caleb and Ash-
ton. Survived as well by siblings Marg
Kronberg, Dorothy (John) Lanting,
Milo (Marge) Schuitema, Larry (Cos)
Schuitema, Bob (Jeannie) Schuitema,
Bernard (Marie) Schuitema, sister-in-
law Maria Schuitema, and numerous
nieces and nephews. It was her wish
for cremation. Her life was celebrated
on July 7th at the Pierson Bible Church
with Pastor Tom Sluys officiating. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
are suggested for the continued minis-
try of Pierson Bible Church of which her
parents were among the founders in the
1950’s and her husband who was on the
board prior to his death. Due to Beat’s
health she was unable to attend church
for many years but is still remembered
fondly by all the old-timers.

and staff of the Rustic Sports Shop in Howard City.
They have donated items and reduced its price of
some goods to help Bill fulfill his goal of getting
Veterans to the fishing hole. This year, the Tri
County Eagles #4467 in Sand Lake along with the
Ladies Auxiliary and the Eagle Riders, have joined
with Bill in his efforts to serve the Veterans. Each
of them have pledged money to help defray “Hokie
Pokie’s” expenses.
If any of you would like to help, you can do-
nate poles, and fishing supplies that might be ly-
ing around the house by dropping them off to the
Eagles Club on Lake Street in Sand Lake. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

The Drug Free Montcalm Collaborative (which includes
The Coalition to Prevent Underage Drinking and Tobacco
Free Montcalm) would like to thank all the schools in
Montcalm County who participated with the Michigan
Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY) survey this year.
The State of Michigan has developed the MiPHY sur-
vey and offered it at no charge for local school participa-
tion. Seventh, ninth and eleventh graders throughout lo-
cal school districts have the opportunity to participate in

Soft, warm breezes blowing through my windows.
Dappled sunlight blinking across the lawn. Birds and in-
sects singing their summer songs. The work week blends
into enjoyable weekend plans. Summer holidays spent
with family and friends. Parades and cookouts gathered
with neighbors. While this great nation has savored life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness, there has been an
undeniable shift in our foundation. We, the People, have
been working, playing, raising our families, and serving
those around us who are in need. Yet, We, the People, feel
unsure, off-balance, and somehow less safe.
Compromise. Could that be the shift I feel? Compro-
mise is to weaken or give up one’s principles guided by
self-interest. Before I began waking up to the compromise
in Lansing and Washington DC, I believed Congressmen
made decisions based on party platforms. I believed the
foundation for party platforms was the Constitution. These
platforms were to be the foundational principles from
which our representatives made decisions. Based on vot-
ing records, I can’t tell the difference between platforms or
the parties. Representation seems based on the self-inter-
ested principles of getting re-elected. Our representation,

Health Matters
It Could Be A Rough Time

In the winter, you run the risk of getting frostbite, In the
summer, you run the risk of getting a whole slew of things,
including poison ivy, mosquito bites and bee stings. For-
tunately, if you take the proper precautions, you can avoid
many of these things.
Lyme disease is the biggest threat you face from a tick
bite, specifically the bite of a black-legged deer tick. To
protect yourself against Lyme disease, take these precau-
tions:
• Wear light-colored clothing so the ticks will be easier
to see.
• Wear long pants and tuck them into your socks or
boots.
• Use tick repellent.
• Stay away from shrubby areas and tall grass.
• Keep the turfgrass mowed around your home and re-
move all brush piles.
• Thin out low shrub vegetation in the woods around your
home and widen all trails to six feet.
Infected mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting the
West Nile virus. To protect yourself against the West Nile
virus, take these precautions:
• Avoid being outdoors between dusk and dawn when
mosquitoes are most active.
• Wear shoes, socks, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and
insect repellent when outdoors. Make sure the insect re-
pellent is child friendly and contains picaridin or oil of
lemon eucalyptus and DEET. Read the directions before
using it. If wearing thin clothing, use repellent contain-
ing permethrin or some other EPA-registered repellent.
Don’t apply permethrin directly to your skin.
• Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when out-
doors.
• Install tight-fitting screens on doors and windows. Re-
pair openings or tears on damaged screens.
• Keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.
• Eliminate all areas of standing water, such as birdbaths,
wading pools and flowerpots.
For some people, bee stings can be fatal. To avoid getting
stung by a bee, take these precautions:
• Wear light-colored clothing and shoes when outdoors.
Dark colors and prints attract bees.
• Avoid using flowery soaps, lotions or perfumes.
• Don’t leave food, garbage or drinks lying out uncov-
ered.
• Stay away from gardens and orchards.
• If you see a bee, move away from it slowly. Don’t swat
at it; this will only aggravate it.
• If several bees are coming at you at the same time, run
for shelter.
Food-borne illnesses are common during the summer and
are caused by undercooked meat and contaminated pro-
duce. To avoid food-borne illnesses, take these precau-
tions:
• Wash your hands with soap and water after using the
bathroom and before cooking or eating.
• Wash cooking surfaces thoroughly and keep raw food
separated from cooked food.
• Store marinated food in the refrigerator.
• Wash fruits and vegetables with cool running water and
use a soft brush to scrub rough surfaces.
• Store cold food for a picnic in a cooler with plenty of ice
or freezer gel. Keep the cooler in the shade and make
sure the food stays at 40 degrees or below.
• Wrap hot food well and keep it in an insulated container
at 140 degrees or more.
For most people, exposure to poison oak, ivy or poison
sumac can make them miserable. To avoid exposure to
these plants, take these precautions:
• Learn to identify the plants so you can avoid them.
• Wear socks, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and closed
footwear when walking in an area that may have the
plants. Use plastic gloves when working in an area that
may have the plants. The oils in them can soak through
cotton gloves.
• Apply a barrier cream if you think you might be exposed
to the plants. This will slow the absorption of the oil into
your skin.
• Don’t touch your face, eyes or any other part of your
body if you think your hands or gloves may have been
exposed to the plants. Wash your hands immediately
with rubbing alcohol and rinse with cool water. Then
take a hot shower, using plenty of soap and making sure
you get under your fingernails to wash out any remain-
ing oil.
• Avoid contact with your pet if you think they may have
been exposed to the plants. Wash them three times with
a good shampoo, being sure to wear gloves and goggles
and cover all exposed skin. Dry them off with a towel
and wash the towel immediately in hot water.
• Handle all exposed objects with care. Thoroughly wash
off any tools in hot, soapy water and wash clothing and
let it dry outside for a couple of days before handling
it.
• Handle dead plants just like you would live ones. Dis-

routine mammograms at United Hospital now have the latest
diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography.
Greenville’s United Hospital features the state-of-the-art system,
Selenia™ digital mammography from Hologic™.
”We are very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for
breast cancer detection,” states Mike Ancil, director of diagnos-
tic imaging. Digital mammography is different from conventional
mammography in how the image of the breast is acquired and,
more importantly, viewed. The radiologist can magnify the im-
ages, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and
white values while reading the images. These features allow the
radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of
concern.
By offering women the latest technology in mammography, the
hospital hopes to increase the number of area women who follow
recommendations for regular screenings.
The digital mammography unit at United Hospital is accredited
by the American College of Radiology, and meets all the require-
ments of the US Food and Drug Administration’s Mammography
Quality Standards program. All technologists performing mam-
mography procedures at United Hospital are certified and regis-
tered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
To work correctly, our bodies must have foods that contain all eleven primary chemical elements, plus
trace elements that are needed in tiny quantities. Soft tissues need Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen,
and Sulfur. Boney tissues need Calcium, Phosphorus, and Magnesium. The Main electrolytes are Potassium,
Sodium, and Chloride. Essential trace elements include: Iron, Fluorine, Zinc, Copper, Iodine, Selenium,
Manganese, Molybdenum, Chromium, and Cobalt. Other trace elements that are not essential, but useful
are: Silicon, Vanadium, Tin, Nickel, Arsenic, Boron, Strontium, Lithium, and Germanium
Wow, that is quite a grocery list. All of that is supposed to come from our food. One of the big problems
is that sometimes the soil that grows the food does not contain all the things we need. For example, most
Michigan soil is low in Iodine. As a result many people in the last few generations had thyroid problems.
This is why we feel quite strongly about supplementation of the diet with a good nature vitamin and trace
mineral combination.
Another problem is picking fruit before it is ripe, to increase the shelf life. I know someone who grows
oranges, who picks them green and stores them for many months in cold warehouses. When it is time
to ship them, the room is filled with some kind of gas which turns the green fruit
orange overnight. Some times they spray paint the oranges so they look nice. So
the nutritional content is difficult to know for sure.
Buy organic if you can. Some of the local grocery stores are stocking some organic
food. Look for a 4 digit code that starts with a 9 ( example 9253). 4000 numbers
are not organic, and 8000 numbers mean the food is GMO, genetically modified.
We do not really know yet if that is a big problem, but it might be.
So the best advice is to eat organic, and add a good natural vitamin plus mineral
supplement. Check your supplement to see if it will dissolve in water or vinegar in
less than 5 minutes. If it will, then it will dissolve in your digestive tract and be able
to be absorbed.
