Unit Plan
Unit Focus: Catching and Unit Dates: January
Grade(s): 1/2 Teacher: Mr. Jordan Logan
Throwing 9th- February 3rd
Overview:
The skills of catching and throwing will be explored through different activities, drills, and games that incorporate the
skills into them. Each lesson will include a pre-amble in which the class will discuss an important aspect that will follow
such as the techniques previously learned, or an important issue within physical education that attributes to the
students physical literacy (i.e. nutrition, or daily activity). The progression of the unit leads up to a handball
championship focus in which the students will separate into teams and compete to win the championship. Each lesson
within the championship will involve the teams to brainstorm and compete in diverse sections that will boost the
students physical literacy.
Rationale:
The focus of the unit will involve a scaffolding of different types of movement and abilities that will build up to an overall
outcome of team collaboration in preforming in games. The students have been working on different types of throwing
games and using different types of stopping and going up until this point, so I have decided that it would be best to
start to culminate those skills into different types of traditional games such as handball. There will be varied formative
and summative assessment that will be ongoing through each lesson with a focus on the students attitude towards
expanding their physical literacy and physical education. There will be rubrics incorporated later on that will further the
direction and points of emphasis of feedback. I have decided to base the unit off of the grade 1 P.E. PoS despite
teaching s few grade 2s in the class. This decision was made consciously due to the repetitive similarities that can be
seen across both PoS.
Objectives / Learner Outcomes:
The outcomes will cover a vast amount of movement that will be included through a mix of gameplay and explicit
instruction. The different concepts of team work and fair play will be further encouraged in the actual game play that
takes place.
GLO A: A1-1, A1-5, A1-10 GLO C: C1-3, C1-5
GLO B: B1-1, B1-2, B1-3, B1-6, B1-8 GLO D:D1-2, D1-3, D1-4, D1-6, D1-7
Key Teaching and Learning Activities:
The key activities of the unit are initially the catching and throwing fundamental days where the students will be given
explicit steps and techniques that are to be implemented in the games. The focus activity of the unit is the handball
championship in which the students will incorporate the different techniques that were learned and use them to
compete with their teams.
