INTRODUCTION

Social media is an collective of online communication channels

dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content sharing and
collaboration. And are computer mediated technologies that allow the
creating amd sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms
of expression via virtual communities and networks.

The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was
social media was a wbesite called six degrees. It was named after the six
degrees of seperation theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001. Six degrees
allows users to create a profile and then friend users.Social media allows
greater flexibility for individuals to site their desire sources. This may allow
organizations to improve communication and productivity by disseminating
information among different groups or blogs in a more efficient manner.
Mobile phones and other gadgets allows us to visit any site and be updated
on social media with the use of internet connection.

Social media users had tremendous growth growth with over 1.71
billion monthly users and these figure is expected to grow. As of now
Facebook, Instagram and twitter are the most visited sites of social media
visitors. Students, adults, employees, and those with organization use social
media to be updated to the lastet trend, to be entertained with when they
are bored and to promote a blog or their business with the use of social
media. Social media are becoming increasingly popular among politician and
their organizations as a mean to disseminate political messages, learn about
the interests and institutions of constituents and the broader public, raise
funds, and build networks of support. These activities often take place on
privately run social networking sites that allow political figures and
institutions to communicate with the public in unmediated, high profile fora.
As of now popular sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Myspace and
Flickr are the most visited websites. The content posted on these sites may
relate to policy issues and the official work of politicians or to aspects of their
personal lives (C;ark, 2010).

Based on students responses, it is evident that using of social

media in distance learning environments allowed for increased collaboration,
communication, and interaction through blogging, document sharing
networking tweeting and social bookmarking(Brady,2010, Manan,2012
Mcarthy,2009 veletsianos and Navarette,2012). Many people use social
media to be updated in the latest trends, to be entertained, to communicate
to others, make accounts from social networking sites and many more.
Individuals are fond of using social media because this can give us the latest,
exact news in the world. This can improve the communication skills of every
individual. Social media are popular in promoting blogs, business via online,
news and etc. They have created social media for people to be able to
communicate, interact and connect with other people around the world. And
especially to gain friends. The researchers conducted this study to know

Social media

Role of Social media to our daily lives

Nowadays Social Media plays an important role in our life, we are
using it to keep in touch with our friends and make some new friends.
Besides that we want to show the world what we are doing by means of
posting pictures or videos. These tools are very useful, but do they control
our life too much? A few years ago social media wasnt that big yet, but
nowadays people are able to use it for almost anything in their daily life. Why
would people buy CDs when we have YouTube? Why would people buy
newspapers when we have Facebook and Twitter? Everything looks and feels
easier to do with social media. But is the impact of social media in our daily
lives too much? Browsing on Social Media websites can make you feel
connected to a larger community, but according to Steven Strogartz of the
Cornell University this is a false sense connection. Social media can make it
difficult for us to distinguish between important relationships from real world
and normal relationships formed through social media. Due to our social
media relationships there will be a higher chance that our most meaningful
relationships will weaken. It is the fact that social media has tremendously
changed the way people interacts and carry on with their everyday lives.
With internet becoming a necessity in every home or office, majority of
people who are online spend most of their time on social media. With these
phones, it is not a must for one to have a PC or laptop to be online. One way
social media is playing a great role in our lives is the way news is delivered.
The digital age has seen a drop in the amount of newspapers sold and the
number of people reading those news sources. Social media has greatly
affected the way people spend their leisure time. Gone are the days when
people frequented parks or libraries during their free time. However, with the
rise of Social Media sites more people are logging in everyday just to interact
and share information with friends and followers. Moreover, social media has
also changed the way people socialize and interact with each other. Even
though a large number of people still meet each other or new people through
traditional venues such as cafes, parks, and so on, more people are
discovering friends via social media. Social media not only helps people to
stay in touch but also aids in the formation of new alliances. These alliances
are usually people that share common interests. These social networks open
up the possibilities of discovering and learning new information. Social media
allows people to create professional networks that help them search for jobs
or get tips on how to enhance their careers.

With such networks, people are spending less time looking for jobs through
newspapers and are turning to social media. And also social media has an
importance to marketing. Marketers have discovered the great potential of
social media when it comes to reaching potential clients. It is common to find
companies with Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, u8sing them as a way
of interacting with clients. Some companies have even created special
accounts for solving customers problem and handling their complaints.
Social media is also being used as a way of attracting new clients and
promoting products and services. It has also changed the influence that
people have. For instance, celebrities such as Oprah have millions of
followers on social media and this increases her reach and power when it
comes to influencing others. Social media has definitely transformed the way
people interact and share ideas with each others.

Impact of social media on student life

Todays world is a global village. Everyone is connected to one
another in the vast network generated by the Internet. As said by Marshall
McLuhan, a philosopher of communication theory, the new electronic
independence re-creates the world in the image of a global village. It
illuminates the lives of thousands of people by spreading knowledge globally,
thereby making us global citizens. Humans are like animals. We always like
to remain in some group or another, and we prefer to follow what this group
does. All of our traditions and cultures are the product of this group-oriented
facet of human nature. A well-known American psychologist, Abraham
Maslow, stated in his Theory of Motivation that the social need of human
beings is the third most important requirement after our physical and safety
needs. Even our self-esteem comes after this social dependence this is the
main reason billions of people use social networking to stay connected, make
friends and satisfy their social needs. As of 2015 the worlds largest social
networking company, Facebook, has 1.49 billion active users, and the
number of users is increasing every year. Majority are students that are using
Facebook and other social networking sites. Students love to spend time
socializing because it provides them the freedom to do whatever they want,
to upload what they want and to talk to whom they want. Students likes to
make new friends and comment on the lives of different people. But not all
are students only that majority of students have this attitudes on social
media. Students can also create their own identity that the real world doesnt
allow. Students have become prone to frequent fluctuations in mood and
self-control. The most important thing that student must do in life is to
study, learn new good habits and gaining knowledge to become a good
person with moral character. But, today as we can see this optimal learning
process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming entrapped by the
ploys of social networking and social media. Getting too involved in social
media can lead to addiction that inculcates bad habits. However social media
also impedes an advantage to educational applications that can be useful to
students to make their performance in school better and learn independency
on the limitations of social media to their lives.

Advantages of Social Media in Education

There are many advantages of using social media in education.
One is to encourage interaction between students. This is especially helpful
in college environments where having students create a bond with the
institution can increase retention rates. Social media can increase student
collaboration. Students become friends with their classmates on social media
and are more likely to collaborate on projects. Faculty can use social media
to get students become more connected to participate. This can be useful for
team projects. Many colleges stress the importance of the soft skill of
working in groups. Social media sites can be helpful to increase the ability as
the students can hold meetings in real time and work on their projects. Social
media provides richer experience for resources. Video resources, tutorials
that can be share easily with the entire classroom at the click of the button.
This eliminates the need for students to copy website links from a handout
and have the risk of mistyping. These are just a few of advantages of using
social media in education.

Disadvantages of Social Media in Education

If there is advantages there are also disadvantages of social
media in education. Students can get distracted and start using social media
for their personal purposes and not pay attention to educational content.
Posting inappropriate content can also be a significant problem. This can
damage a reputation of a person or an educational institution and likely one
of the reasons that many educational institutions have not embraced social
media. Relying too much on social media for communication can stifle a
students ability to interact to a person. This is a problem throughout the
society and not just limited to education. Many of todays youth have grown
up with technology and many times it is easier for them just to communicate
online and not in person. Social media can influence students to do wrong
doings on the internet like bashing a person and posting harsh things on
social media that can be viral all along the social media. Students can also
be curious of sites that are not applicable for below 18 years old. And their
performance in school may be affected because of too much using social
media while in class, at home and etc. Social media can be a powerful
enhancement to the way students are educated but it does take some
planning and thought process before implementation.

Retta Guy 2012, the World Wide Web has been radically transformed,
shifting from an information repository to a more social environment, but
also creators content. Web-based technologies now encompasses the
socializing features of virtual spaces that have emerged as zones for
information sharing, collaboration and community formation and extension.
Social media derived from the social software movement, are the collection
of internet websites, services, and practices that supports collaboration,
community building, participation, and sharing. Social media are
technologies that facilitate social interactions, make possible collaboration
and enable deliberation across stakeholders. These technologies include
blogs, wikis, media (audio, photo, video, text) sharing tools, networking
platforms (including Facebook) and virtual worlds. The use of social media
has surged globally in recent years. As of July 2011. Facebook passed 750
million users, Twitter had over 177 million tweets per day, and YouTube
reached three billion views per day. Despite the popularity social media for
personal use, however a low percentage of students and faculty use them for
academic practice. As educators look for ways to engage and motivate
students, social media technologies are becoming viable supplement to the
traditional

learning environment. Also educators are examining the combination of

distance education delivery with instructional social media thus, providing
new approaches to teaching and learning that blend pedagogy and
technology. Thus social media makes our life easier with the help of those
latest technology like smart phones, tabs and laptops that will allow us to
visit social media. This can also influence our daily lives of what we can see
on social media, like the way others live their life by posting pictures and
more that will influence the youth and people to live the same way similar to
others. We can see that how social media really do influence us especially
the youth of todays generation.

Jessica McDonough 2013,

Though social media can increase students learning through student
interaction, challenges arise when social media are incorporated into an
academic course. The assumption that students are familiar with and
agreeable to using certain types of social media can cause educators to
inadvertently fail to provide the resources or encouragement necessary to
support student usage and learning (Cole, 2009; Vljataga & Fiedler, 2009).
Arnold and Paulus (2010) found that even when social media is used for an
educational purpose, students incorporate the technology into their lives in a
way that may differ from the intentions of the course instructor. For example,
off-topic or non-academic discussions occur on social media because of its
primary design as a social networking tool (Lin et al., 2013). Further, as a
students age increases, the frequency of off-topic discussions also increases
(Lin et al., 2013). This indicates that while social media may encourage
broader discussions of course content, older students may spend more time
than younger students engaging in unrelated discussions. Social media can
also negatively impact student GPA as well as the amount of time students
spend preparing for class (Annetta et al., 2009; Junco, 2012b). One
explanation for this impact is that social media provides too much
stimulation and therefore can distract students from completing their
coursework (Hurt et al., 2012; Patera et al., 2008). Another reason for this
may be that students who spend more time on social media may have
difficulty balancing their online activities and their academic preparation.

Ma Hua 2013,
Students who participate in social media as part of a class feel more
connected to their peers that those students who do not participate in social
media (Annetta et al., 2009; Jackson, 2011; Tomai, Rosa, Mebane, DAcunti,
Benedetti, & Francescato, 2010). Social media allows students to not only
group themselves with peers who are similar, but also to enhance and link
existing peer groups (Jackson, 2011; Mazman & Usluel, 2010; Wodzicki et al.,
2012). In addition to enhancing established peer groups, social media can
bridge the diversity that exists in classrooms by establishing a neutral zone
in which students can interact with one another (Junco et al., 2011; Krause &
Coates, 2008; Kuh, 1993, 2009; Mehdinezhad, 2011; Pike et al., 2011). Tomai
et al. (2010) found that students who used social media felt more

emotionally connected to their peers because they felt as though they had
people to talk to if they had a problem or if they needed help. Further, these
peer connections encouraged participation by students who initially felt
intimidated by in-class discussions (Arnold & Paulus, 2010; Junco et al., 2011;
Rambe, 2008). The connections that students make with classmates through
social media can impact the learning environment that is created.
Participation in social media creates a more collaborative and communicative
learning environment for students by providing opportunities for discussions
and interactions with their peers (Heafner & Friedman, 2008; Jackson, 2011;
Liu et al., 2011). By collaborating with peers on a given topic, social media
offers opportunities to develop a stronger sense of community among
students (Arnold & Paulus, 2010; Dawson, 2008; Heiberger & Harper, 2008;
Hurt et al., 2012; Jones et al., 2009; Top, 2012). Although Dawson (2008)
found that the degree to which a student feels a sense of community might
be influenced by the presence and experiences of pre-existing social
networks, students who interact with higher numbers of learners also exhibit
a higher sense of community. The use of social media also contributes to a
sense of community among students by allowing personalization of profiles,
including the addition of pictures and other identifying information (Arnold &
Paulus, 2010; Stevens, 2009). This personalization, coupled with the critical
examination of course topics, supports an authentic relationship between
students by encouraging openness and sharing of information, which also
increases students perceived learning (Hurt et al., 2012; Top, 2012).

Kristen Tarantino 2013,

Social media supports collaborative learning, which in turn helps to
strengthen the creative learning process (Shoshani & Rose Braun, 2007).
Collaborative learning is characterized by student interactions and
connections with course content. Social media provides an opportunity for
students to expand their learning environment since only a portion of
student learning occurs within the confines of a classroom (Chen & Bryer,
2012; Friesen & Lowe, 2012; Wodzicki, Schwmmlein, & Moskaliuk, 2012).
Fewkes and McCabe (2012) further argued that it is the responsibility of
educators to find ways to incorporate current social media into their
classrooms. Educators can use social media to develop creativity in their
students by encouraging them to explore the content material in new ways
(Frye, Trathen, & Koppenhaver, 2010; Lamb & Johnson, 2010). For example,
social media provides students with options for creating authentic, creative
products through tools such as blogs, YouTube, and podcasts (Frye et al.,
2010; Lamb & Johnson, 2010). Students can also use social media to
research content material in order to develop new knowledge (Frye et al.,
2010; Lamb & Johnson, 2010). By allowing the needs of creative learners to
be met through a cooperative learning environment, students are better able
to balance their individualism with the need for contact with others, allowing
new ideas to flourish (Garrett, 2011; Shoshani & Rose Braun, 2007).

This study is affiliated from the study of Andrew Reiner called The
Advantages and Disadvantages of Student Social Media Use He advocated
for social media

Sabbaths, in which students would disconnect from their networks in order to

more deeply engage with each other and their academic pursuits. While
there are certainly negatives that can be associated with social media
overuse, it is also a valuable part of the way our society functions.
He mentioned some positive effect of social media to youth, one of these is
Social Constructivism which he means that social media provides an easily
accessible tool for helping students to work together to create their own
meaning in academic subjects, social contexts, or work environments and
he believes that supporting the development of this skill for students
prepares them for real working experiences.

Another positive effect is Breadth of Knowledge which he consider that

students can experience the broadness of the knowledge and connectedness
through social media and it is now easier than ever to know (or find out)
something about almost anything in the world through connected media.
Additionally, students can be connected to a broader base of opinions and
world views through instantaneous global connections. Last positive effect
he mentioned was Technological Literacy that stated, all social media relies
on advanced information and communication technologies that seamlessly
work to build and support technological literacy. Simply put, one cannot be
engaged in deep and meaningful uses of technology without developing the
sorts of rich 21st Century skills such as information evaluation,
troubleshooting, mediated communication, and others that will enable
connected learners to become valuable contributors to a connected global
economy.
Though all these three aspects of social media use are excellent matches to
employer expectations and help to develop the 21st Century skills that
students will need to be successful in a globally connected economy, there
are some of negative effects of social media to students.

Distraction, the way in which social media involvement provides an

acceptable diversion from intellectual pursuits. It is socially safer to stay
connected to peers through always-on social media, than it is to put oneself
out there by having a legitimate opinion about a serious topic and
disconnecting from the social networks long enough to put it out there. Next
is Pressure to Conform, the main reason of the students behind their 24/7
connection is a fear of not keeping up with peers or appearing like a loser
in public. Another negative side is Risk Aversion, stated that social media
engagement supports a culture of avoidance which operates in direct
opposition to the idea that students need to take risks and fail in their
academic endeavors in order to become successful innovators. Shallowness,
as one of the negative effect states that it could have long-term negative
consequences for learners. Twitter, text messages, and other social media
tools focus on brief, quick, shallow interactions that do not encourage
either deep social engagement or intellectual exploration. There is, after all,
only so much information that can be obtained in 140 characters. While the
option to dig deeper may be present through embedded links in Tweets, for
example, there may be little reward in pursuing those connections for
students. There is no right or wrong answer about social media in our
educational systems. It is an evolving method of communication and one
that is only more likely to gain acceptance and prevalence.
Rather than rail against it, it makes more sense to embrace it, minimize the
negatives and teach students new ways of engaging with social media, their
instructors, and each other that will support them in becoming connected
learners with the skills to become successful connected workers.

Social media- is the collective communication channel dedicated to

community-based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration.

Advantages- is any state, circumstances, opportunity, or means

especially favorable to success, interest or any desired end.

Disadvantages- the state or an instance of being in an unfavorable

circumstance or condition.

Performance- the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an

action, task, or function.

Students- are the respondents of our study.

ABM- Accountancy and Business Management

University of San Agustin- is the setting of our study, the researchers will
conduct interview to those selected ABM students inside the campus.
CONCLUSION

Summary of the Findings

Both male and female has a balance result of the interview, that the both
advantages and disadvantages does not affect that much the performance of
the selected ABM students. Every respondents mostly has similar answers in
both advantages and disadvantages. They admitted that by using social
media can have a big impact to the people, especially in this generation in
their age, people became more dependent on the new technologies.

Conclusions

The social media does not really affect the performance of the ABM
students in school. Because they can manage their time very well. Somehow
it has disadvantages for them by being late, but as what I have said they can
still manage their time in their studies and by using social media.Though
social media can make people very attached to it,but not all people can be
influenced and it is proven upon our research.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusion, the researchers recommends the following:

1. Since the social media has a balance effect to the performance of the
selected ABM students, students must still balance their time with their
studies and using of social media in able to maintain their performance in
school.
2. Teachers must allow their students to explore the social media to gain
new knowledge on certain things rather than nonsense things.
3. Parents must always guide their children by using the internet for them to
maintain good performance in school and in their grades.
4. Future researchers must be eager enough to search for more sources that
will provide more information about certain things.
