Traffic congestion, faced by the city of Petaling Jaya,
is a strategic issue that needs to be managed
effectively and thoroughly. Road expansion and
highway development are not always the best option
in managing traffic congestion in the city. Developing
cities should move forward and explore new
approaches in optimizing the usage of public
transportation mode namely the LRT, MRT and BRT
in a more efficient manner.
MBPJ moves a step ahead by pioneering and
establishing the standard and guidelines on Transit
Oriented Development (TOD) that will benefit the 3
public transportation systems and transform Petaling
Jaya as a liveable city with low carbon emission,
fulfilling the wish of its people. Transit Oriented
Development (TOD) is expected to contribute towards
reducing 40% of carbon emission from the national
target.
The seminar and workshop on Transit Oriented
Development is another forward thinking initiative
undertake by MBPJ to create awareness amongst the
people of Petaling Jaya and other stakeholders,
government agencies, private sectors and NGOs. It
aims to provide an understanding of the needs,
challenges and benefits of TOD in developing and
planning the city.
OBJECTIVES
To create awareness amongst the community
on the Transit Oriented Development and its
approaches towards a livable city;
To provide explanation to the participants on
the public transportation master plan in
Petaling Jaya and Klang Valley;
To share best practices in resolving
transportation issues based on Transit
Oriented Development approach, in Malaysia
and overseas context; and
To develop and draft amendments on existing
guidelines.

ii. Dr Wang Liang Huew a Malaysian born
citizen and founder of a town and transport
planning consulting firm in Hong Kong with
extensive experience and expertise in Asians
transportation system
iii. Mr Warren Rowe a director at the Gold Coast
City Council, who has been responsible for
implementing a significant number of
programmes in the last sixteen years, focused
on improving the planning framework for
Australias sixth largest city including the Gold
Coast light rail project.
