Programming through Mass Media: Mass media are media forms designed to reach the largest
audience possible. They include television, movies, radio, newspapers, magazines,
books, records, video games and the internet. Many studies have been conducted in the past
century to measure the effects of mass media on the population in order to discover the best
techniques to influence it. From those studies emerged the science of Communications, which is
used in marketing, public relations and politics. The weapon using against you in your very
homes entertaining you and your children and gradually indoctrinating you without even
realizing. People are spending more and more time engage with modern media, television,
cinemas, computer games, internet popular fiction, popular and popular music are integral part of

Introduction: Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate
the masses. It shapes and molds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and
acceptable. This research looks at the workings of mass media through the theories of its major
thinkers, its power structure and the techniques it uses, in order to understand its true role in
society. Occult symbolism found in objects of popular culture. From this research arise many
legitimate questions relating to the purpose of those symbols and the motivations of those
who place them there, but it is impossible for us to provide satisfactory answers to these
questions without mentioning many other concepts and facts. We have therefore decided to
conduct this research to supply the theoretical and methodological background.

Mass Media: Mass media denotes a section of the media specifically designed to reach a large
audience. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-
circulation newspapers and magazines. However, some forms of mass media such as books and
manuscripts had already been in use for centuries. Mass media includes Internet media (like
blogs, message boards, podcasts, and video sharing) because individuals now have a means to
exposure that is comparable in scale to that previously restricted to a select group of mass media
producers. The communications audience has been viewed by some commentators as forming a
mass society with special characteristics, notably atomization or lack of social connections,
which render it especially susceptible to the influence of modern mass-media techniques such as
advertising and propaganda.

Who owns the Media? Of all the media distribution channels the most influential has been
the television, we are constantly exposed to thousands of images of violence, advertising, sex,
celebrities and much more, in fact a its known that a child is exposed to about 40,000 ads a year.
But who owns the media, which are the companies or people that shape our values, beliefs and
decisions? The media is basically dominated by five major companies they are:

• Time Warner
6|Page
• VIACOM
• Vivendi Universal
• Walt Disney
• News Corp

Those 5 companies own 95% of all the media that we get every day. They own the major
entertainment theme parks, entertainment movie studios, television and radio broadcast networks
and programming, video news and sports entertainment. They also own integrated
telecommunications, wireless phones, video games software’s, electronic media, the music
industry and more. Years ago there was more diversity in companies, but they have merged so
now they are just a few and they have the power to shape the opinion and beliefs of us and our
kids. So it’s important to be aware of what your kids are exposed to every day and you should
also try to look at things from different perspectives and not just from the one the media gives
you.

Role of media in the society: Media plays a significant role in our society today. It is all
around us, from the shows we watch on television, the music we listen to on the radio, to the
books and magazines we read each day. Television more so that any of the other Medias
achieves a myriad of different goals. These goals range from entertaining to educating. Various
confines of education and entertainment are depicted in television. For the most part the
television is found to be very entertaining. People watch television shows they enjoy and find
entertaining. Television is often looked at as a babysitter for children. The viewing of television
can entertain the young and old alike for great amounts of time. Along with entertaining, the
media is used to inform society. Days are often started by the listening of the news on the
morning television, judging the latest updates on the local traffic jams. Days are often concluded
with the watching of the late night news on television, keeping us informed of the world and the
events occurring around us.

Negative Influence of Media on society: In my opinion, the media has a strong influence
on society, both negatively and positively. How could it not have an influence, even if it's to
provoke thought? The media is all around us and what surrounds us will have an effect in some
manner. We feel the negative effects are stronger because of the "consistency" used to pound this
7|Page
negativity into society's mind. It isn't necessary to use a hot babe in skimpy attire to sell a
hamburger, but we have seen it done and in commercials for "family" restaurants. Sex is used to
sell anything and everything and in that respect, it sends a negative message all around. Gone are
the days when it was a shock to see an undergarment in a commercial. Now it's nothing to see the
undergarments attached live models. How many people do you think are actually looking at the
undergarments instead of the body parts? How often do you see overweight women on TV,
music videos or in any scene that represents a desirable woman? It's rare and it sends a message
that women have to be a certain weight, have a certain look in order to be seen as desirable, to be
"somebody". That is a negative message. The media, in the form of TV and movies, doesn't
represent the world as a whole. It often focuses on a single sector that influences what is to be
accepted. Some are influenced so strongly that they will do anything to live up to the
expectations, from developing eating disorders to multiple plastic surgeries. We all have
witnessed the influence music videos have on teens. We have heard the young boys talk about
the female artists and how hot they are and what they'd like to do to them. We have seen the
young girls striving to look like them so the boys will give them the same attention. We have
seen teens totally change their conservative attire to freaky after finding out it's cool to look like
certain music artists. Many change their actions and language to mimic these influences. Casual
sex is seen as very normal in movies and TV. It's cool. “everybody’s doing it" - not much
different than in society. Sex has become recreational for many and the media's influence doesn't
help to think otherwise. The message that is being sent can have dire consequences such as
STD's and unplanned pregnancy. We have witnessed the influence music videos have on teens.

influence, but each person has free will. They can follow the influence of the media or create
their own path. As for adults...it's pretty lame to follow a path just because the media tells you

8|Page
that are the way to go. Think for yourself; define yourself as somebody, regardless of the
influences around you. The media will always be an influence, but it can't control us unless we
hand it over control. In essence, there's a vast difference between influence and control.

Effects of violence in the media: When we watch TV or a movie we usually see many
images of violence and people hurting others. The problem with this is that it can become
traumatic especially in our children as we see it more and more. Our kids that are starting to
grow and are shaping their personality values and beliefs can become aggressive or they can lose
a sense of reality and fiction of what they are seeing. In the past years there have been some
cases of kids carrying a gun at school and even hurting others with it. Those kids have been
linked to excessive use of violent video games and war images. Another problem is that real war
is used as a form of entertainment by the media, we should make our kids and teen aware that
war is not a form of entertainment and that there is no win or lose like in video games, in real
war everyone lose.

How media influence public opinion: As we have said above, the media has a huge
impact on society and also in public opinion. They can shape the public opinion in different ways
depending of what is the objective. For example, after the attacks of 911 the media gave a huge
coverage of the event and exposed Osama guilty for the attack as they were told by the
authorities. This shaped the public opinion to support the war on terrorism, the same happened
with the war on Iraq. The problem is that if media received inaccurate information then the
public opinion supported a wrong cause, this is the power of public opinion influence. Other
ways to influence are with polls and trends, especially in political campaigns. The candidates that
can pay for more TV and media exposure have more influence on public opinion and thus can
receive more votes.

PAKISTAN: Effects of media on mind discussed (Dawn Tuesday, June 29, 2004): Exposure
of children to scenes of violence, natural disasters, catastrophic events and crime reports on
television leads to stress, anxiety and fear among children leaving far reaching impacts on their
personality. These views were expressed at a seminar on "Mind and media", organized by the
Endeavour-A Youth Forum at the Aga Khan University Auditorium. The speakers said that
research had shown that children and adolescent were prone to imitate what they saw on media.
9|Page
Effects could be evident immediately or surface a year later, they added. Teachers' Development
Centre Director Prof Abbas Hussain said that children through media got aware about certain
facts of life mysteries, contradictions, tragedies and violence, which were not considered suitable
for them to know. Television programmes and films, he said, were mostly full of violence and
tragic scenes, which were being watched in every home through cable television creating social
problems for people with no exception to children. Prof Abbas Hussain said, "All secrets of
adolescence like social, sexual and physical matters are watched by people of all age groups
including children, consequently childhood innocence is impossible to sustain." He suggested
that parents should watch television with their children to check on such programmes and time of
watching television should be limited. Dr Ihsanullah Saeed, a renowned psychiatrist, said that
parents should see what children were watching in order to minimize the effects of such
programmes. "Television should not be used as a baby-sitter," he said and recommended removal
of television sets from bedrooms, monitoring of the websites they visit, setting of time limitation
and finding alternative activities for them would be very helpful in reducing negative effects on
personality of children. He suggested to observe "Break: Free of TV" week in Pakistan in order
to promote healthy activities and spending more time with families. Referring to a case of an
eight-year-old girl, he said, she could not sleep and study for days after watching the images of
corpses, after a bomb blast in Karachi, recently aired on a private television channel. Among
others, Aga Khan Education Foundation General Manager Wasif Rizvi and Endeavour-A
Youth Forum President Sohail Mohammad Ali spoke at the seminar.

Literature Review: Literature review is considered to be the most important stage of the
research process as it allows to earn from (and eventually add to) previous researches and also
saves time, efforts and money. Therefore, the researcher reviewed all the relevant literature
available on internet. A logical and systematic review of the literature made the completion of
this study possible. The focal point of this study was to evaluate the effects of media on people’s
minds and life patterns.

Introduction: In this media mind control research we explain how media controls your
thinking. We also give some advice on how to prevent yourself to be controlled this way. If you
10 | P a g e
are reading this literature review it is likely that media mind control subject is not something new
to you. But most of the population would be shocked to find out this. Media controls you in such
a subtle way that the majority of population would not even believe that this could happen.
Media controls you in many ways: through commercials, TV news, newspapers, radio news,
movies and sometimes even through the internet.

Mind Control Theories and Techniques used by Mass Media: We need to ask you
a very important question. What is the most efficient and effective way to control world? Two
words mind control. Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate
the masses. It shapes and molds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and
acceptable. This research looks at the workings of mass media through the theories of its major
thinkers, its power structure and the techniques it uses, in order to understand its true role in
society

Programming through Mass Media: Mass media are media forms designed to reach
the largest audience possible. They include television, movies, radio, newspapers,
magazines, books, records, video games and the internet. Many studies have been conducted
in the past century to measure the effects of mass media on the population in order to
discover the best techniques to influence it. From those studies emerged the science of
Communications, which is used in marketing, public relations and politics. The weapon
using against you in your very homes entertaining you and your children and gradually
indoctrinating you without even realizing. People are spending more and more time engage
with modern media, television, cinemas, computer games, internet popular fiction, popular
and popular music are integral part of our lives.

How Does Media Mind Control Affect You Through Commercial? Do you know
that you can be affected by TV commercials even if you shift your focus away from television?
This is because commercials are so powerful that through the repeat exposure they affect you on
an unconscious level. All you need to hear is 5 seconds of the repeated commercial (you don't
even have to see it) and your unconscious mind 'gets the message'.

11 | P a g e
“Advertising is the art of arresting the human intelligence just long enough to get money from
it”.

Commercials are getting more and more sophisticated. Thus they affect your mind to even
greater extent. Their repeated exposure lets commercials really sink into your mind, affecting
you unconsciously. You may not even notice how often the same commercial is running. Repeat
exposure is the single most powerful tool of convincing. Every big brand knows that. People
associate repeat exposure with credibility. They don't even know what impact this exposure is
making on them. You may think that if a commercial is run often, it means that the company
selling the product is credible. Thus, the product should be very quality and would not do any
harm. This is just how your 'logical' thinking works.

How Does Media Mind Control World Through TV News? This is the worst
method to control people. TV news keeps people at a very low, fear and consciousness level.
Their Message is always the same: “You have to fear as today. Happened do not believe that?
Before almost every single sentence they say, just add "You have to fear because." they will let
you know what you should be scared of today. Their power is not distant and impersonal; it
reaches into every home, and it works its will during nearly every waking hour. It is the power
that shapes and moulds the mind of virtually every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, simple or
sophisticated. The mass media form for us our image of the world and then tell us what to think
about that image. Essentially everything we know, or think we know, about events outside our
own neighborhoods or circle of acquaintances comes to us via our daily newspaper, our weekly
news magazine, our radio, or our television. It is not just the heavy-handed suppression of certain
news stories from our newspapers or the blatant propagandizing of history-distorting TV
“docudramas” that characterizes the opinion-manipulating techniques of the media. You
probably get the impression from watching news that there is nothing good happening in the
world. That we are all 'doomed'. This is just nonsense that media mind control impressed on you.
The reality is so much different. And you will never understand this unless you stop watching
TV. There are so many good things happening in the world. So many people are becoming
millionaires, there are millions of them, and plenty of people are becoming extremely wealthy at
this very moment. Finally the inspiration and empowerment can reach you so effortlessly

12 | P a g e
through books and articles of people that experienced that. It is becoming so much easier to
travel the world, to understand different cultures and to explore subjects that interest you. The
world is becoming, it is certainly not ending!

How Does Media Mind Control Affect You Through Newspapers? Newspapers
affect you less, but they use the same method as TV news. Every newspaper, every poster, every
magazine in world has subliminal messages embedded in the pictures. Subliminal perception is a
deliberate process created by communication technicians, whereby you receive and respond to
information and instructions without being aware of it. Messages in the form of printed words,
pictures or voices presented either very rapidly or very obscurely bypass your conscious
awareness. Anything consciously perceived can be evaluated, criticized, discussed, argued, and
possibly rejected. Anything programmed subliminally to your sub consciousness meets no
resistance. This subliminal information is stored in your brain and capable of influencing your
judgment, behavior and attitudes.

How Does Media Mind Control Affect You Through Movies? Movies usually
have different effect than news. There is less media mind control involved. Instead of instilling
fear, they maintain your Comfort Zone. You see, you can choose whichever movie you like to
watch. It is not the same as mixed content that you get in news.
Subliminal messages in movies and media: Subliminal messages have always
been an uncanny phenomenon and often subject to scientific and public debate. A subliminal
message is a signal in the form of a picture or sound that is designed to pass the normal limits of
perception. That means that people perceive it with their subconscious while not perceiving it
consciously. This technique is sometimes used in movies and advertising to influence the
subconscious of the viewer. The latest stir around this controversial technique has come up
around the campaign of the Bush administration. Allegedly, a promotional video that was aired
recently would contain subliminal messages meant to convey a hidden message.

Conclusion: Once we come to the conclusion that the media is intentionally deceiving us, we
can apply the principles of problem-reaction-solution. This formula takes a problem by either
13 | P a g e
creating it or allowing it to happen and presenting that to the population. It could be terrorism,
molestation, extra terrestrials. These topics create fear and no one in their right mind would
support terrorism or crime. It's therefore OK to blast the television, the papers, and radio with
'the problem.' The natural reaction from the people is a request for more control to ensure more
safety. Most let their fear and emotional side control their decisions and usually translated into
something like, "The government needs more power over our lives to make us safer and freer
from tyranny. We believe what the media tells us so we will support whatever decisions they
make." Today's mainstream corporate news program discourages dissent of the war and paints
activists with a negative brush that hints of treason. At the same time, the so-called journalists
are cogs in a much larger machine who know that if they report a story that paints the
government in a dark light, is likely to remain on 'the wire' and off the front page.

14 | P a g e
Research Methodology: Our research is qualitative in nature. This is primarily based
on the primary data that was collected through interviews. These interviews were conducted with
the concerned media persons from Express news, Geo TV, Ary Digital and Mehran TV etc.

Variables:

Dependent Variable:
• Controlled people mind

Independent Variables:
• TV programs

• Commercial

• TV News

• Newspaper

• Movies

• Internet

15 | P a g e
Data Analysis and Findings: The information and survey data were collected in
various ways, including a secondary research that is a research requires a summary or collection
of existing data which include previous research reports, newspaper, magazine and journal.
Primary research also performed that is media concern person Ali Ahmed Ghuryani Chief
Editor Mehran TV, Kamran Shah Geo News, Aftab Ahmed Samejo Free Lance TV
Director, Saad Faraz Assistant Manager Marketing Daily Express & Tribune Express,
Mohsin Rasool Editor ARY News and Syed Hamid hussian shah Asst Promotion Manager
ARY Digital face-to-face interviews conducted.

Audience study:

Qualitative phase
The face-to-face research had three purposes:
• To identify issues and provide input for the design of the queries to used in the interviews
• To explore some of the emotive aspects of the contemporary experience, and what drives
these attitudes
• To gain understanding of the emotional and rational motivators and barriers to
attendance.

Data Analyses: After the interacting with media related professionals and having their
opinion on the queries, is can be said that “there is no doubt that
being a most powerful mean of communication can impact directly or indirectly on minds of
people. It is being used to form public opinion and motivate the audience towards a certain
direction. A common man can easily be influenced by media’s well known techniques i.e.
16 | P a g e
advertisement, newspapers, campaigns, movies and talk. It is the sole responsibility of Media
that it should also disclose all the aspects on an issue and arrange different forums where is issue
may be debated, so that a common individual can be able to understand the same and play his /
her valuable contribution / role in that. Though the Media always talks about their freedom but
never let any government or institution to put checks on them that may relates to yellow
journalism. In our opinion there should be an institution that forms its policies in consultation
with the Media instead of imposing rules and regulations to such an important pillar of the state.

17 | P a g e
Research Conclusion: In conclusion, we are not one of those tinfoil hat people, but we
definitely believe there is a conscious effort by governments, corporations, and the media
companies themselves to influence the masses through the use of mass media. Think about it.
You're a government in control of 300,000,000 people, many of which *coughsouthcough* are
not too bright. You need to keep them under control, and you know that they enjoy watching TV
for hours at a time. What do you do?
The clear choice is too subtly (or no so subtly in some cases) tweak what is broadcast to suit your
needs. Need more oil dependence? Promote shows criticizing the research on clean fuels. Want
an accurate census? Make a series of frilly ads with lots of singing and clever slogans. Fucked up
big time? Launch a vague public apology claiming you'll do better next time.
It works the same way for corporations, too. If you want your product advertised, buy
commercial slots on the big networks. Want your opposition to look bad? Mimic their product in
your "Ours vs. Generic" tests. The long and short of it is that as long as there is mass media, it
will be used to control people mind. Next time you guys watching TV keep a sharp eye out for
the blatant tricks employed. Same goes for radio and just about any web site. You can't escape it.
All you can do is be aware and consciously look out for it, lest you fall into the same trap. As an
interesting little experiment, start actively looking for and following trends. We don't mean give
in to them, but notice them.
