SOL 8.7: Volume and Surface Area

8.7a-The student will investigate and solve practical problems involving volume and surface
area of prisms, cylinders, cones, and pyramids.
8.7b-The student will describe how changing one measured attribute of a figures affects the
volume and surface area.

You need to know how to:

Compare and contrast the volume and surface area of a prism with given set of
attributes with the volume of a prism where one of the attributes has been increased by
a factor of 2, 3, 5, or 10
Describe the 2-D figures that result from slicing 3D figures parallel to the base (e.
g. as in plane sections of right rectangular prisms and right rectangular pyramids)

Preparation:
Lesson aim for today: Today the students will learn how to find the volume of prisms using the
formula sheet and understand exactly what they are finding. (Rectangular and triangular prisms,
cylinders, cones, and pyramids)

Introduction: I will talk with the class about what they know about volume and how to find it. I will
have students look at the formula sheet and 3D models to see if they know what the different
letters mean when trying to find volume of 3D figures. I will also go over the different figures the
students need to know and their names (3D models) to help review. (Rectangular and triangular
prisms, cylinders, cones, and pyramids)

Questions:
What are you measuring when finding volume?
What are some real life examples of finding the volume of something? (pouring,
filling, etc)
What are the names of the figures that are on the formula sheet and models
shown?
What is needed to find the volume of the different figures?

Teach the lesson:

Activities:
1. Warm up based on formulas to get mindset for lesson ~10 mins
2. Present to students the puzzle packets I made for when they complete their work
and need something to do so they dont socialize ~5 mins
3. Student will discuss different outside world application and which formula for
which figure to use and the measures to replace ~5 mins
4. Powerpoint lesson on finding volume of the different shapes while students take
notes ~50 mins (during udos-pass out note cards for comment box)
5. Pass out homework to have time to look over before they leave ~10 mins

If needed: Have students complete exit ticket if there is time at the end of class for that and
review homework for questions

Materials needed: Powerpoint, pencil/paper, formula sheet, calculator

Check for understanding: The discussions they have with their partners and as a class will help
to check for understanding. If able to complete exit ticket this will also be a form of checking for
understanding.

Lesson closure:
Conclusion of lesson: Have students look over homework to ask questions before they leave for
the weekend. If time provides, exit ticket will be at the end of class as well.
Reinforcement: Homework-worksheet to be completed before Monday

Notes/takeaways:

*Naomi Heckford, Brian, and Tiffany will need to complete their benchmark test
*Matthew needs to finish the 8.11 test during second exploratory
