For the first time in its 98-year history, the Bacchus Marsh RSL has a female
president.
Cherrison Lawton took the reins on Mach 10 just six weeks before the
leagues biggest event of the year, ANZAC Day.
And while the job is a big responsibility, Cherrison is not daunted by it.
Ive got that sense of convergence about it, its being in the right place at
the right time, she explained.
I find it quite exciting, but I am also very aware of the responsibility,
and I am also very aware of the absolute honour and privilege that the
community have given me.
Cherrisons husband is a long-time member of the RSL in Melbourne, with
Cherrison having joined the Bacchus Marsh branch in 2013 after moving to
the town in 2011.
The people of Bacchus Marsh have welcomed us, theyve taken us into
their community, its beautiful, we love living in Bacchus Marsh.
Cherrison had already been serving with the club as a welfare officer but
she does indeed have family roots in the service.
I am a third generation servicewoman, my history is my grandfathers
and great uncles, my father and uncle all served - I have got history in the
services.
Settling into the role of president is set to be an easy transition, with the
help of a strong team.
Its team work. The secretary and the treasurer are a fantastic team holding
up the executive I must add that I make a lousy secretary.
And the team before her wasnt half bad, either.
I must admit, the men have done a noble task of carrying this RSL for 98
years.
The current lot are looking pretty good too and one of Cherrisons plans
for the future includes increasing the numbers.
The fellas are all really encouraging, weve got a fantastic group of men.
As far as my role, it is to look after our senior veterans and promote the
opportunities of Bacchus Marsh RSL to reach the younger veterans, from
the later campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, that are here in the Bacchus
Marsh region, and Id encourage them to contact the RSL.
But in the meantime, its all about that upcoming event.
First and foremost, we want to do the march on Sunday 23 April, the march
for ANZAC Day, leaving at 2 oclock from the hospital and going down
Grant St, along Main St, and ending up next to the RSL hall, followed by
afternoon tea here, we want to make that an absolutely fantastic afternoon.
We want to build on what has already been built up here.

Blitz nabs motorcyclists

A start-of-the-year police
blitz on motorbike safety has
nabbed nearly 200 offenders
in Bacchus Marsh.
Bacchus Marsh Sergeant
Mark Bacon said that a total
of 182 offenders were pro-
cessed for 193 offences.
The majority of the offenc-
es were speed related, with
133 penalty notices issued
for speeds ranging between
10 to 25kmh over the limit,
Sergeant Bacon said.
Two penalty notices were
issued for speeds in excess
of 25kmh over the limit and
there were 14 unregistered
vehicles detected and seven
unlicensed/suspended or
disqualified drivers.
There were also two driv-
ers who engaged police in
pursuits.
One was riding a Harley
Davidson motorcycle with
no registration plates. Police
had to disengage from that
pursuit due to the dangerous
riding and speeds reached.
Enquiries in relation to that
rider are ongoing.
The other driver who en-
gaged police in a pursuit
which also had to be called
off due to his dangerous
driving was later identified.

local roads is the aim of a new campaign
set to run through January and February.

Accident Commission have joined forces
to target behaviours of road users that

Dog blamed
for oil spill
A Bacchus Marsh company
has told Environment Pro-
tection Authority Victoria
(EPA) its guard dog was
likely responsible for an oil
slick in Werribee River that
saw it fined over $7,700.
EPA South West Regional
Manager, Carolyn Francis
said EPA officers had traced
the source of the oil to a me-
chanical workshop operated
by Traianon Transport Pty
Ltd.
The pollution was due to a
waste engine oil tank at the
companys premises leak-
ing oil into the stormwater
system, which then carried
it into Werribee River, Ms
Francis said.
The company told EPA the
only plausible explanation
was that one of its guard
dogs had bumped open the
valve of its waste oil tank,
causing it to spill the con-
tents of the tank, she said.
The oil travelled into a
stormwater drain at the
rear of the premises, which
resulted in it flowing about
two kilometres to a dis-
charge point in the Werribee
River near Peelmans Lane
and Grant Street.

Prompt reports from con-
cerned residents alerted the
EPA via their hotline of the
spill in early January.
We responded immediate-
ly and worked with the local
council to gain access to the
stormwater system and trace

They may not quite have the
key to their new room yet,
but Bacchus Marshs CWA
ladies have set about mak-
ing plans.
It was a long four-year jour-
ney for the group to find
a permanent home, but a
peppercorn lease agreement
with Moorabool Shire Coun-
cil will see the CWA take up
residence at the Darley Civic
and Community Hub.
And locals are really, truly,
set to benefit.
One of the things were
thinking about doing is
having a lunchroom, for
the local workers, with the
council staff and the ladies
taking their kids to the early
learning centre, you know,
a morning tea, said presi-
dent Rose Heggarty, sadly
without specific reference to
the Associations renowned
scones.
There are other ideas be-
ing discussed too once the
kitchen has had a little up-
grade to become registered
including setting up cooking
classes for disadvantaged
young people, and opening
the rooms up to the general
public twice a year.
We havent nutted it all out
yet, Ms Heggarty said.
The Bacchus Marsh CWA
currently has 20 members,
as well as a new night branch
with about a dozen members
and with which the daytime
CWA is willing to share the
new space.
A lot of ladies are working
these days, and we have our
meetings in the daytime, its
too hard for them. But were
always looking for more
members.

Flight risk remanded

A man accused of stealing
hundreds of thousands of
dollars worth of items to
fund his lifestyle and pay off
debt has been remanded in
custody.
Shaun Taylor, of Ballan, ap-
peared in the Ballarat Mag-
istrates Court on Tuesday
March 14, where he was
refused bail after failing to
convince Magistrate Grego-
ry Robinson to release him.
Taylor was already set to
appear in court on that day
for a consolidated plea, how-
ever, the father of three was
arrested on fresh charges in
the early hours of Saturday
March 11.
Police informant, Senior
Detective at Moorabool
CIU, Joshua Coy told the
court that Taylor had alleg-
edly stolen a television and
doona cover, valued at $500,
from a caravan park in early
February.
He said it was also reported
that Taylor had damaged
the floor covering of a cabin,
with costs expected to be
around $1,000.
On March 10, police al-
legedly attended a cabin
located in a caravan park in
Creswick.
Detective Coy said the ac-
cuseds fianc had initially
tried to deny that Taylor was
inside, however, after being
located under a bed, Taylor
was arrested and remanded
in custody.
The following day, Taylor
was taken to the Ballarat
Base Hospital after suffering
chest pains.
Detective Coy said upon
his release from hospital at
about 11am, Taylor attempt-
ed to run free from police,
however, after a short chase
he allegedly fell over and
was subsequently arrested.
At the time of his arrest, the
accused was already on bail
for a number of dishonesty,
firearm and drug charges
and had failed to abide by
his strict bail conditions.
Based on the large number
of serious offendings, the
accused is an unacceptable
risk to the community, De-
tective Coy said.
I am aware he has a large
number of debts and he
continues to steal in order to
fund his lifestyle.
Taylor represented himself
to apply for bail, claiming
the allegations against him
were false.
These new charges are
ludicrous, I am not that des-
perate, he said.

ble with debts, but what
mounting debts? I am work-
ing full time now. I am not
a risk to the community, I
just want to go to work, come
home, see my kids and see
my fianc.
I didnt do half of those
things alleged, the [matters]
from last year are past me.
I want a fresh start, being
locked up is not good for my
boys.
Magistrate Robinson said
while the recent charges
were of less seriousness than
Taylors priors, the fact that
he continued to reoffend on
bail was disturbing.
There is a risk of further of-
fences here and with the po-
tential face of imprisonment,
you are a flight risk.
Taylor was refused bail and
remanded in custody until
April 7.

Dance offers women a little Payne

An all-new, all-female syn-
dicate with 2015 Melbourne
cup winning jockey Mi-
chelle Payne also as trainer,
has its roots in Moorabool.
The idea to encourage more
females to get involved in
the owners side of racing
came not only from Austral-
ian Thoroughbred Blood-
stock, run by Darren and Liz
Dance near Ballan, but from
their long-term relationship
with the internationally re-
nowned Ms Payne.
Between ATB, Womens
Racing, and Michelle Payne
weve banded together to
create this racing syndicate
exclusively for women, Liz
explained.
With a client base made up
mostly of men, the new syn-
dicate aims to balance out
the racing gender gap.
All the ladies out there that
dont know anything about
racing - the whole idea is to
have fun; and its affordable
for the women. Women can
come in, find out all about it,
and Ill be there to educate
the ladies about the work-
ings of the industry and
have a lot of fun.
And the ladies are in safe
hands Liz, and her hus-
band, have been in the rac-
ing industry for 25 years.
The relationship between
ATB and Ms Payne was al-
ready strong shes already
ridden group winners for
them, and the all-female
syndicate was the natural
progression of a good idea.
It was just an idea, that we
discussed out of the blue re-
ally, about getting women
involved in racing, and it just
seemed a good idea, Darren
explained.
We talked to Michelle
about it and given her pro-
file, and what shes been able
to achieve in racing, and as a
jockey, and her views on the
attitude of some to women
in the sport, it was a good fit
there.
Already, two horses have
been acquired through the
New Zealand Ready to Run
sales, and are being trained
in preparation for Autumn
racing and the all-impor-
tant Spring carnival.
Already weve had a lot of
interest and theyre nearly
fully subscribed, Darren
said.
Ms Payne, who has recently
been granted a dual licence
to ride and train as well, will
be jockey and trainer for the
horses.

Horses spark hope

A 15-hand high horse
named Steve is just one of
the cast of characters help-
ing people with self-devel-
opment using the popular
practice of horse therapy at a
Mt Egerton property.
Anna McGookin, herself
horse-mad since being a lit-
tle girl, and her husband
Barry are building up the
already successful Spark of
Hope program, now regis-
tered as a not-for-profit char-
ity and theyre getting the
word out about it.
At the moment its pri-
vately funded, by myself, my
husband and a few friends
that absolutely believe in it,
Anna explains.
Fully insured, Spark of
Hope offers personal devel-
opment, confidence building
and communication aware-
ness programs on a one-on-
one or small group (up to 5
people) basis for a number of
weeks or for larger groups
on a once- basis.
During the program, par-
ticipants learn about how
horses communicate with

signed to illustrate some of
the teaching.
We find that it is during
these activities that par-
ticipants become aware of
some of their patterns of be-
haviour, as well as, in some
cases, confront various fears
they may have.
As participants come from
that background as well.

as to best meet the needs of
those who attend.
At the moment, weekly ses-
sions are run on-site.

kids and the horses have
produced impressive results.
Different kids tend to re-
late to different horses, and
the other thing Ive found
too is that as Im talking
about the horse and their
own background, the kids
will relate to some aspects of

abused as such but a cou-
ple of them could have easily
ended up in the pet food in-
dustry because they werent
good at one particular thing,
but then it turns out that
theres this other thing they
are good at, and people find
that relates to them if Im
not good at one thing, I can
find another thing that Im
good at.
Anna herself has most cer-
tainly found what shes good
at.
Thats what really drives
me, its incredibly rewarding.
I was one of these horse-
mad girls, I always wanted
a horse... a number of years
ago I thought blow it, weve
reached a time in our lives
when we can do it, so we
did. Call it a midlife crisis if
you will
The program is focusing on
drawing more adult groups,
and working in particu-
lar with women and with
corporate team-building
groups.
Both of us have done lead-
ership training in the past,
and its particularly good as
an income stream support-
ing our other work, and its
a lot of fun to do it as a team-
building exercise.

Avenues sole surviving finals team, Division 5 travelled to
Saturday 9 July
Victoria BC to face Webbcona in the penultimate game of the
season, a knock-out Preliminary Final.
Avenue, qualified for this game despite a big loss to Central
Wendouree last week, but were able to survive in the race for
the flag, thanks to the double chance it earned after finishing
top of the ladder at the end of the Home and Away season.
With five changes to last weeks side, Avenue started well
in three of the four rinks to establish an overall two shot
lead by afternoon tea. Ray Humphreys rink led the way by
picking up 17 shots either side of the break, to establish a
commanding lead which they did not surrender, eventually
running out 20 shot winners. Di Hardiments rink was one
shot ahead of their opposition at the break, but picked up
valuable shots upon resumption (including six shots on
one end) to take control of the game and ending up with an
9-shot win.
Stewart Wilsons rink had a battle befitting a final, with scores
being close all day. They were able to pick up four shots in
the last three ends to win by five shots. Unfortunately, Peter
Kays rink faced arguably the oppositions strongest rink and
were playing catch-up bowls particularly after the tea break,
before going down by 16 shots.
Nonetheless the 17-shot win provides Avenue with the
opportunity for a re-match with their second semi-final
conquerors Central Wendouree in this weeks Grand Final.

The Labour Day long week-
end saw Bacchus Marsh
host Gisborne in the hotly
contested semi-final of the
GDCA McIntryre Cup. The
two-day game was an en-
thralling battle with the re-
sult in the balance until the
final over.
Bacchus Marsh won the
toss electing to bat. Unfor-
tunately, things didnt go to
plan with Bacchus Marsh
soon on the backfoot at 2/9
with Lalor and Porter back
in the pavilion. The pres-
sure continued to build as
the Bulls struggled to 5/74
with Sepala contributing a
solid 35 before becoming the

the game. Whilst the Mount
Clear tail wagged to give
them a respectable score, in
the end the Lions dismissed
them for 185 to move onto
next weekends Grand Final
against a Wendouree team
that havent played in a
Grand Final for four seasons,
but won five premierships in
a row before that.

It isnt just the Lions First
XI moving through to a pre-
miership decider next week-
end though, as Darleys 16 &
Under team will also play in
a Grand Final next weekend
after they comfortable ac-
counted for Ballarat-Redan
in their semi final.
After losing the toss and be-
ing asked to bowl first at the
Darley Hub, the Lions took
41 overs to skittle the Two
Swords in one of their best
team bowling performances
for the season, dismissing
them for 84. Wickets were
shared amongst the Darley
bowlers, with Mitch Ward
(2/13 off eight overs), Corey
Beaton (2/13 off five overs)
and Joel Cadman (2/4 off
three overs) taking multiple
wickets and Tyler Cox (1/9
off seven overs), Miles Sea-
ger and Aiden Cox all taking
a wicket each.
Commencing their innings
Ekanayaka returned to the
attack only to pay the price
from his previous efforts
with serious cramp forcing
him from the field. Upon
his return to the field, a he-
roic final spell by Ekanayaka
resulted in him bowling Wil-
son breaking his off stump
in the process. At 6/193, with
limited overs remaining, it
was game on again.
The tension was palatable,
with the scoreboard closely
followed by the strong crowd
as balls and runs remaining
converged to zero. Vernon
and Young held steady for
Gisborne until, with scores
level, Vernon was run out
in the second last over. The
first ball in the final over was
the nail in the coffin for the
Bulls as Young guided Gis-
borne to victory with 2 runs.
A brave effort by all in-
volved with Bacchus Marsh
proudly fighting until the
end to only just miss out on
a place in the McIntryre Cup
final for 2017.

Galea for eight, with Jordan
Monaghan and Joel Cad-
man carrying the team over
the line and into the Grand
Final with unbeaten half-
centuries Monaghans
coming off 59 balls before he
retired, and Cadmans off 60
balls with eight boundaries
before also retiring. Mitch
Ward came in to play a late
cameo innings of 28 off 12
balls, with four fours and a
six as Darley notched 2/148
off 25 overs before calling
it a day, and now face Na-
poleons-Sebastopol in next
weekends Grand Final.
Unfortunately, the Lions 14
& Under Second XI wont be
joining their older counter-
parts in Grand Final week-
end, with their season end-
ing at the semi final stage at
the hands of Mount Clear on
the weekend.
Darley won the toss and
sent the Mounties in, with
their 50 overs netting them
a score of 7/257. Luke Hay-
ward was the leading wick-
et-taker for the Lions with
2/30 off his eight overs, with
Brodie Ward, Aaron Cad-
man, Jyson Fawcett, Zane
Colley and Kurtis Beck all
taking wickets.
Darleys innings started
well, with Brodie Ward and
Rockey Hoey combining
for a 68 run opening stand
before each was dismissed
for 25 with the score on 68.
Aaron Cadman and Zane
Colley put on 36 runs for the
third wicket before Colley
was run out with the score
on 104. Cadman was the next
to fall, top-scoring with 38
before being caught with the
score on 127 and when Tyler
OHehir was the fifth wicket
to fall on 154, the remaining
Darley wickets fell soon as
the Lions were dismissed for
166 to end their season, with
Jyson Fawcetts 24 the only
middle order rear-guard
action.

The AFL home and away season kicks off this week and as
the Ballarat Football League prepares their season opener,
Ballan 2nd X1 Semi Final Darley Seniors had a practice match against Portarlington.

Ballan went into the game with only
10 qualified players due to injury or
unavailability of a couple of bowlers.
Despite that all bowlers put in a great
effort to restrict Mt Clear to 218 with
a good contribution by all, only to
be let down by some poor fielding
at times. When Ballan batted we lost
some quick wickets to be 4/34 but
an excellent performance by our tail
end batters Roger Taylor, Evan Shaw
and Michael Vallance got Ballan back
into the game only to tie the match.
Unfortunately as Mt Clear finished
higher on the ladder they progress

in a great performance on the day

Ballans bowling and fielding on the
Sunday slipped a bit and allowed
Ballarat Redan to put on 116 on the
Sunday. This left Ballan 65 runs to
make; Ballans batters stuck to the job
at hand to get the winning runs with
two overs to spare.
The boys are now into the Grand
George Muir (12 runs) trying hard to bring the team to victory. Final this week against East Ballarat.
