Note: This syllabus is subject to modification based on class size and also based on the needs,
background, experience and interests of the students enrolled in the course. The goal of the
syllabus plan is to make the learning experience as rich and relevant as possible to the students
while adhering to the course outline as established by the University. The instructor reserves
the right to make certain modifications to this syllabus as are dictated by the unique
circumstances of each class.

3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to study the basic concepts of management information systems
(MIS), encompassing the principles, current practices, and an analysis of the business
environment in which individual firms operate and also the related organizational
activities pertaining to information technology management.

4. GOALS

The goals for this course include providing the student with an awareness of how
effective information systems management can be undertaken by an organization to
successfully conduct their business as well as to prepare the student for advanced
courses on this subject.

5. COURSE OUTLINE

This course will cover all the basic elements of management information systems.
Complete details of the subject matter are included in the schedule portion of this
syllabus.

6. ACTIVITIES IN CLASS SESSIONS

- Review of noteworthy information technology stories and announcements in the media


- Review assigned homework
- Lecture on new material
- Student exercises / case analysis
- Student presentations (when scheduled)
- Video Presentations

7. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

Attendance and Up to 100 points total (Based on attendance and 100 points 8%
Participation contributions to class discussions)
Research Paper To be based on an Instructor approved business/technology 200 Points 16%

Research Paper 1. Up to 50 points will be awarded based on team peer 200 Points 16%
Presentation review
2. Up to 50 points will be awarded based on class team
evaluation
3. Up to 100 points will be awarded by the instructor for
content and presentation quality

Individual Presentation Up to 100 points total for bringing in and presenting to the 100 points 8%
on a Current Topic class an article from the media on a relevant information
technology subject

Mid-term Exam 15 Essay questions 300 points 23%


Final Exam 20 Essay questions, comprehensive 400 Points 31%

8.5 POLICY ON INCOMPLETES

Unavoidable work or life events may make it impossible for a student to complete all course
requirements by the end of the term. In such cases, it is the student's obligation to make
appropriate arrangements by drafting a written, signed Incomplete Contract and obtaining the
instructor's written agreement prior to the last class session. This Incomplete Contract must
identify which specific course requirements will not be completed by the end of the term and
the date by which all course requirements will be completed.

A student who does not complete all course requirements within a term and who fails to enter
into an Incomplete Contract as described herein will be given zero points for each required
course component that was not completed.

10. ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is required to maintain course proficiency. 10 points are awarded for each
class meeting for attendance AND participation. Participation includes the following:

Each student must present during the course of the class, at least once, a brief oral
presentation of an article on a relevant information technology topic from the media.

12. PROGRAM RELATIONSHIP

This course is required by all business administration majors.

13. RESEARCH PROJECT

Students will form teams consisting of two or three students each. Each team will research and
write a paper and prepare an accompanying PowerPoint presentation on a relevant

management information system/technology topic (e.g. How mobile computing is transforming


the banking sector)

Other examples:
An significant emerging technology that will affect the business landscape
A noteworthy information technology STRATEGY
A significant historical event in the evolution of information technology

The research results will be presented to the class on the night of week nine. All team
members will participate in the presentations.
