Research Funding

+ Why?
+ How?
+ So what?

+ Tips and tricks

+ Examples the process and the outcomes

What does research funding refer to?

+ Supports research activities!!!

+ Can fund existing sta time

+ Can fund new sta (Research Assistants)
+ Travel and subsistence
+ Exhibitions
+ Symposia
+ Publicity (print, online, etc.)

+ Create a job for you!!!

10 Point Guide
RESEARCH FUNDING
Securing (research) funding aint easy

IF IT WAS EASY, EVERYONE WOULD DO IT!

BE PREPARED TO FAIL
Nothing ventured and all that

YOU WONT BE SUCCESSFUL IN ALL

FUNDING THAT YOU APPLY FOR

LEARN FROM FAILURE

SUCCESS RATES CAN BE BELOW 10% BUT

SOMEONE HAS TO GET FUNDED.
GET CONNECTED
Get involved

DO YOU KNOW OF ANY CURRENT

RESEARCH PROJECTS?

PAY FORWARD TO GET SOME PAYBACK

MOTIVATION
Be clear why

IS THIS A STEPPING STONE

TO SOMETHING ELSE?

CAN YOU DO THIS

WITHOUT FUNDING?
GET THE KNOWLEDGE
Research funding requires a certain kind of knowledge

RESEARCH FUNDING HAS ITS OWN LANGUAGE AND CODES

HAVING A PHD IS NO GUARANTEE OF

BEING ABLE TO SECURE FUNDING
UNDERSTAND THE FINANCES
Money makes the (research) world go round

RESEARCH CAPACITY CAN BE INCREASED

SIGNIFICANTLY THROUGH FUNDING

RESEARCH AND NON-RESEARCH

FUNDING AVAILABLE (UK AND
EUROPEAN FOR NOW)
ITS NOT ALL ABOUT YOU
Collaborate with the best

COLLABORATION, COLLABORATION, COLLABORATION

BEYOND THE ARTS
Interdisciplinary research

WORK WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES

USE THE ARTS TO ENERGISE RESEARCH AND

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES
A COG IN THE MACHINE
Many minds...

THERE ARE LOTS OF

BRIGHT MINDS OUT THERE

YOU WILL DEVELOP NEW UNDERSTANDING

TEACHING & RESEARCH
Research informed teaching

RESEARCH CAN INFORM

AND INVIGORATE TEACHING

NO NEED TO HAVE A SPLIT PERSONALITY

OPPORTUNITIES FOR
POSTGRADUATE INTEGRATION
So what?

+ Know you enemy WHO?

+ RCUK, charities, trusts, etc.
+ Non-research funding provides opportunities
for activities that give track record and CAN
lead to research

+ JUSTIFY against THEIR criteria

Understand the funders motivations

+ Why do they fund research?

+ What do THEY get out of it?

+ What should they fund your research?

+ What do YOU get out of it?
An example

+ Arts and Humanities Research Council

+ Full-time sta required to submit two
research outputs.
+ Fractional member of sta can chose to
submit one or two outputs.
+ All outputs will be accompanied by a 300

Design Action Plan
