AppendixD:AnnotatedBibliographyEntryTemplate

When you save this document in your Capstone Google shared folder, you are required to
name this as Annotated entry #__ so that it is clear which entry this is and to ensure that it
is easy to find at a later stage in this process. Be sure that you leave a blank copy of this
template in your Google shared folder template file so that you have it available for the next
entries.

Two annotated entries are provided in this template for the two required sources due each time
annotated bibliography entries are due.

Her Code Got Humans on the Moon-And Invented Software Itself

Citation:
You are encouraged to use EasyBib to house your citations and then copy and paste from the site. Its
easy and they guarantee that you format correctly. The EasyBib site will default, depending on subject
area you identified when you set up your bibliography page, to either MLA or APA (or other formatting
systems). You should manually select either MLA or APA if you dont like the particular formatting that
EasyBib established and use it consistently.

If you are citing a website, you MUST include the URL (despite what EasyBib will generate and/or
Purdue OWL says).

Evaluatingthesource
Before you spend time reading the source, put your source through this brief test and determine whether its worth
using and documenting as part of your research. We are using a customized version of the CRAAP (an acronym for
Currency-Relevance-Authority- Accuracy-Purpose) test, designed by California State University at Chicos Meriam
Library.

Put an x (as appropriate) in relevant spaces.

I got new ideas on how I can structure one class in the workshop series to inspire my students to
continue code with these inspirational stories of very successful and intelligent women. Looking
into more depth of Hamiltons life has also given me more of an idea of what it was/is like to be a
women in the professional coding field, as it explains her experience being surrounded by men
and the sacrifices she made, but she ended up loving it overall.

might prove helpful and/or relevant to your project?

thanks to Hamilton and the work she led, notions of what humanity could
do, and be, changed not just beyond the stratosphere but also here on the
ground. Software engineering, a concept Hamilton pioneered, has found its
way from the moon landing to nearly every human endeavor.

Lauren had crashed the simulator by somehow launching a prelaunch

program called P01 while the simulator was in midflight. There was no
reason an astronaut would ever do this, but nonetheless, Hamilton wanted
to add code to prevent the crash. That idea was overruled by
NASA[...]Everyone said, That would never happen, Hamilton remembers.
But it did. [...]Hamilton was in the second-floor conference room at the
Instrumentation Laboratory when the call came in from Houston.
[...]Hamilton and the MIT coders needed to come up with a fix; and it
needed to be perfect. After spending nine hours poring through the
8-inch-thick program listing on the table in front of them, they had a plan.
Houston would upload new navigational data. Everything was going to be
OK. Thanks to Hamiltonand Laurenthe Apollo astronauts came home.

b) -What new ideas did you get that extended or broadened your thinking in new directions?

I got new ideas on what life was like for women breaking out in the coding field, as well as their
experiences raising a family and being a full time programmer, which is definitely a concern for
many female programmers, as it is a very demanding job and in the world we still live in today,
women are expected to be the main caretaker of the children in the household. This got me
thinking about how I can bring that narrative into my presentation, because it is also necessary to
allow women to have equal opportunities in technology.

d) Can you provide at least two quotes and/or statistical information from your source that you think
might prove helpful and/or relevant to your project?

In retrospect, I think I was very lucky. I worked in coding from its beginning and it has developed into
a fascinating mathematical topic. I have appreciated the opportunity to work with many wonderful
mathematicians, in particular Richard Brualdi, John Conway, and Neil Sloane. I was able to care for
my children in their younger years in a low pressure environment. I would find child rearing difficult
facing the pressures our assistant professors face. Our discipline is not the only one demanding a great
deal. My daughter, a medical resident with a young daughter of her own, has plenty to say about the
long hours required of residents. Unfortunately, our society is probably losing valuable contributions
from women for these reasons - Vera Pless

However, she felt knew that she was being discriminated against for being a woman and often she was
told openly that universities and colleges were not the place for a woman. However she heard that the
Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory was looking for mathematicians to work in a new area
called "error-correcting codes" and although she had never heard of an error-correcting codes at this
time, her algebraic experience was rightly considered to be exactly what was needed to make progress.
