UTAHS EMPLOYMENT SUMMARY: FEBRUARY 2017

SALT LAKE CITY Utahs nonfarm payroll


employment for February 2017 grew by an estimated Labor Market Indicators
3.3 percent, adding 45,700 jobs to the economy since February 2017
February 2016. Utahs current employment level
registers 1,445,000. Utah
Employment Year-Over % Change: 3.3%
Februarys seasonally adjusted unemployment rate Employment # Change: 45,700
held steady from January at 3.1 percent. Approximately Unemployment Rate: 3.1%
47,500 Utahns were unemployed during the month and
actively seeking work. The national unemployment rate United States
decreased one-tenth of a percentage point from Employment Year-Over % Change: 1.7%
January to 4.7 percent. Unemployment Rate: 4.7%

Utahs monthly labor market indicators continue to


show the economy operating at or near full employment, reported Carrie Mayne, Chief
Economist at the Department of Workforce Services. For the first two months of 2017, the state
had fewer unemployed persons than the 2016 monthly average of 51,800.

Eight of the ten private sector industry groups measured in the establishment survey posted net
job increases in February as compared to last year, while the Natural Resources and Mining
industry decreased by 800 positions and the Information industry shed 600 positions. The
largest private sector employment increases were in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (11,500
jobs); Professional and Business Services (8,200 jobs); and Education and Health Services
(7,200 jobs). The fastest employment growth occurred in Other Services (4.4 percent); Trade,
Transportation, and Utilities (4.3 percent); and Professional and Business Services (4.2
percent).
