Quote Integration

Why should you use quotes in your writing?

They act as ______________ to support your point.
They give credit to someone elses ideas so you are not ______________.

How do you integrate quotes?

Introduce a quote with a lead-in so the quote does not stand alone.
Use ______________ around the quote.
Use parenthetical citations to state where you found the quote.
Always explain and develop your quotation. Use your own words to say how this quote
supports your thoughts and ideas. More than ______________ of explanation is
necessary.

What kind of lead-ins can you use?

According to X,
X says/states that
In Xs view,
X agrees/disagrees when she writes,
You can also incorporate the quote into your own sentence.
Example:
Toms left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung
dead at his side. It ended in a small, shriveled hand (Lee 186).
Practice Together:
From To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, page 9:
Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom. People said he existed, but Jem and I had never
seen him. People said he went out at night when the moon was down, and peeped in windows.
Practice Individually:
Pick one of these quotes to integrate. Write a lead-in and then copy the quote:
1. From To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, page 270. His cheeks were thin to
hollowness; his mouth was wide; there were shallow, almost delicate indentations at his
temples, and his gray eyes were so colorless I thought he was blind. His hair was dead
and thin, almost feathery on top of his head.

2. From The Caged Bird by Maya Angelou lines 15-18 page 293. The caged bird sings/
with a fearful trill/ of things unknown/ but longed for still.
Parenthetical Citations

What are parenthetical citations?

They are how you ______________ for a quotation you use.
The citation goes at the end of your sentence and is put in ______________.

Parenthetical citation rules:

Use double quotation marks around the quote .
If the quote includes dialogue or another quote, use single quotation marks around the
dialogue or quote .
Place the punctuation of your sentence ______________ the parenthetical citation.
Question marks and exclamation points should appear in the quotation if part of the
quotation, but after the citation if part of your sentence.
Examples:

but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge (Poe 7).
Miss Maudie explains that mockingbirds dont do one thing but sing their hearts
out for us. Thats why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird (Lee 90).

What to include in parenthetical citations:

Authors ______________, unless you state it in your lead-in.
If there is no author, a shortened version of the title of the work should be used.
The page number where the quote appears.
If you are quoting a poem, use ______________ instead of page numbers. Use the
word line before the number.
If you are quoting a play, list the act, scene, and lines with a period in between the
various numbers (Example: Act 5, Scene 3, lines 54-56 would be written as
5.3.54-56)
Examples:
When the narrator finds Doodle dead he says For a long time, it seemed like
forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of
rain (Hurst 564).
Before Romeo kills himself, he notices that Juliet has crimson in thy lips and in
thy cheeks/ And deaths pale flag is not advanced there(Shakespeare 5.3.95-96)
Hughes advises readers to Hold fast to dreams/ For if dreams die/ Life is a
broken-winged bird/ That cannot fly (lines 1-4).
Practice Together:
Said by Friar Lawrence in Act 2, scene 4, lines 65-67 on page 804:
Holy Saint Francis! What a change is here!/ Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear,/ So soon
forsaken?

Practice Individually: Pick one of the quotes. Then, write a lead-in to introduce the quote, copy
the quote, and then write the parenthetical citations for the quote.

1. Said by Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, page 30. You never really
understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.

2. Said by Mercutio in Act 1, Scene 4, lines 53-55 on page 785. O, then I see Queen Mab
