& Infinitives

A Verbs followed by gerunds [verb + v-ing]

enjoy mind practise deny recall risk appreciate

consider finish avoid postpone prohibit resent keep

miss suggest admit quit delay cant stand recommend

e.g. I enjoy playing tennis.


e.g. John suggested going to the cinema.
e.g. The man denied stealing the money.


B Verbs followed by infinitives [verb + to-inf.]

want need offer forget agree plan try expect

hope promise refuse learn choose decide intend arrange

e.g. I need to buy a dress for my sisters wedding.


e.g. We have decided to go to Spain next summer.
e.g. My friend offered to help me with my homework.


C Verbs followed by both gerunds and infinitives [verb + v-ing/to-inf.]

like hate love begin start prefer continue

e.g. He loves swimming. or He loves to swim.
e.g. I prefer eating out. or I prefer to eat out.
e.g. We continued driving towards Dubai. or We continued to drive towards Dubai.

BUT

I would like e.g. I would like to dance.


I would love + to-inf. e.g. I would love to go to Thailand.
I would hate

* Note that some verbs that are followed by both ing or to-inf. have different meanings.

e.g. I stopped smoking. (= I dont smoke anymore)
e.g. I stopped to smoke. (= I stopped what I was doing to smoke a cigarette)

e.g. I remember playing in the garden when I was a child. (= I did this and now I remember)
e.g. I remembered to get some milk. (= I remembered that I should do this and I did it)

D Verbs followed by object + infinitive [verb + object + inf.]



advise (someone) to + inf. e.g. The doctor advised him to eat healthily.
encourage (someone) to + inf. e.g. Can you remind me to buy some milk?
e.g. My mother forced me to get out of bed.
remind (someone) to + inf.
e.g. Our teacher urged us to study hard.
tell (someone) to + inf.
allow (someone) to + inf. Note the negative form:

force (someone) to + inf.
e.g. The doctor advised him not to smoke.
order (someone) to + inf. e.g. Our teacher urged us not to miss classes.
urge (someone) to + inf.

E preposition + v-ing

in e.g. He apologized for being late.
for + V-ing
e.g. Im interested in learning languages.
