Recruit Peer Tutors

Start a Program: I would want to meet with the principle and some other teachers who have
worked at the school for a while and see if there had ever been a peer tutor program. I would
also talk with other schools and see what things they do for a peer tutor program. I think it
would be good to have a school assembly or go around to different classes and introduce
some of our special students and talk about the different activities that they would do doing
through the school year.

Market a peer tutor program: I would go around to different classes or having an assembly
in the school to market a peer tutor program. If possible I would have students from other
schools come that are apart of the peer tutor program and talk with our students. There could
be different fliers that could be handed out to also market the peer tutor program.

Syllabus

Handout of Peer Tutors:

Dear future peer tutors. We are so excited that you are willing to commit some of your time to
serving these wonderful special students who have different disabilities! Even though they
have different disabilities than you and I, they still have fun loving personalities and you can
develop a long lasting friendship with them if you try your best to get to know them. The
biggest thing these special students need is a best friend and a positive role model. Thank
you again for your interest in becoming a peer tutor. It will be one of the most rewarding
things you can do. We look forward to having you on our team!

Course Syllabus:
Welcome to the peer tutor program! We are excited to have you on our team and work with
special students! This course will not be like any other classes you have taken in high school.
You determine what you get out of this course and what activities you participate in. Some
may think this is a baby-sitting job but its not. This is a course where you learn to develop
and maintain healthy relationships and good friends. You learn to work on your
communication skills and be creative in assisting to the needs to others who have disabilities.
This requires you to be proactive and eager to work hard as well as play hard. If you let it,
this opportunity with these peer tutors can shape your life and the type of person you can
become. There are a few things that you need to be aware of:

1. Attendance: this is a big part of the class and will therefore be a big part of your grade.
Your buddy needs you and is depending on you to be in class everyday. Make sure you can
come and participate. If you struggle with getting to class and you know you will miss a lot of
days, this course might not be for you. 40% of your grade

2. Reflections: A reflection is something you will feel out at the end of each week to help you
see what went well and what didnt go so well. These reflections are worth 30% of your grade
and will really help you to improve as a peer tutor.

3. Observations: I will conduct three observations on you during the semester and provide
feedback on what you are doing well and what needs to be improved. They are a good way
of helping me as a teacher see what I need to change in this program and what I should
keep. They also help you to improve as well. 10% of your grade.

4. Professionalism: This includes how you dress, speak, and act. You have a big influence on
these students. They look up to you and follow what you do. Being professional in what you
do will help them to become better and be successful. You are the biggest role model to them
so we need you to be your very best. 10% of your grade.

5. Last but not least. Have Fun! This is a wonderful class full of opportunities to make new
friends and grow. We will have several fun projects and school field trips that you will be a
part of. It will be a great semester so thanks for joining our team!

FERPA/ Confidentiality Form

To teach the peer tutors about FERPA I would hold a meeting, probably every other month to
help remind them of what they can and cant do. Students cant name the students when
talking about them with others. Pictures and videos are not allowed unless they have written
permission from the parents.

Confidentiality form:
As a peer tutor I agree to get to know my buddy and help them out to the best of my abilities.
I understand that there will be difficult situations and I will seek out the resources to help me
know how to handle those situations. I understand that I will be in the students IEP therefore
I will know part of the goals in the IEP. I will follow what is written in the IEP to help my buddy
reach their goals. I understand that confidentiality is vital so I will be careful not to share
confidential information with other people. I agree to attend all of the training that will be
given throughout the school year to help me be an effective peer tutor.
I understand that as a peer tutor I agree to uphold the law under FERPA. This means that I
will not disclose in private information about the students I am working with. I will not mention
names or talk about incidences that have happened while working. I will not take any pictures
or videos with out written consent from the parents.

Managing Behavior
Behavioral issues may arise in a classroom when a peer tutor is working with a student;
therefore, peer tutors need to make sure that they understand the expectations of the
classroom teacher and follow classroom rules. Here are some of the rules I would put in
place in my classroom.
Do not talk while the teacher is talking.
Always raise your hand.
Treat others how you would want to be treated.
If you need to walk around during the lesson, be quite so you dont distract others.

Modeling Positive Behavior

I would have training with the students and share examples of modeling good behavioral
support. I would probably do one once a month and share a new idea with them on how they
can promote positive behavior in the classroom. Every week I would have all the peer tutors
turn in a reflection on what they felt went well that week and what they feel that they could
have done differently. I would also have them rate how helpful they felt towards the student in
promoting positive behavior.

buddies!

What is your buddies least favorite thing to do?

How can you gain the trust of your buddy that you peer tutor?

How does your buddy act when they are frustrated?

How can you respond in that situation?
