7.3 Materials

The materials of the structural elements of the tank will be allowed by API 650
and referred to by the customer. The plates used to manufacture the bottom,
walls and tank nozzles are carbon steel ASTM A-36, except for those who send
in the data sheet.
Design properties and inspection to be used in the calculations of carbon steel

7.4 Design and Calculation Tank Corps 003-TK-60002

The thickness of the wall design condition, is calculated based on the liquid level, taking the

relative density of the fluid established by the customer. The thickness hydrostatic test

conditions is obtained by considering the same level of design, but now using the relative

density of water.

When possible, the tank can be filled with water for hydrostatic testing, but if this is not

possible and calculating the thickness by conditions of hydrostatic test is greater than the

calculated design conditions should be used that obtained by test conditions hydrostatic.

The calculated effort hydrostatic head for each ring must not be greater than allowed by the

material and thickness not less than that of subsequent rings.

The maximum allowable stress design (Sd) and hydrostatic test (St), is shown in Table No.

4, recommended by the API-650 standard in the design of storage tanks.

The thickness of the body wall required to withstand hydrostatic head is greater than the

calculated design conditions or conditions of hydrostatic test, but in no case be less than

what is shown in the following table according to API-650, eleventh edition.

The maximum permissible efforts to design and hydrostatic test (Sd) and (St) respectively,

used for calculations of thicknesses, are tabulated in Table No. 4, taken from the API-650

standard eleventh edition.

There are two methods used to calculate thickness of the sheets forming the different rings,

which are:

Fixed-point iteration or foot.

Variable Point method.

In this case we use the fixed-point iteration or foot.

7.4.1 Method of Fixed Point or foot

It is used for tanks whose diameter is less than 60m (200ft). The One Foot, method

calculates the thickness design points that are within a foot on the bottom edge of each ring

that forms the body of the tank.

This chapter design is developed based on API Standard 650, eleventh edition June 2007,

with Appendix Appendix 1 November 2008 and November 2, 2009, effective date May

2010, page 5-11, section 5.6.3.

Preliminary tank dimensions based on the required storage volume and based on the

diameters and heights suggested by the API 650 standard, is taken from Table A-3b.

7.4.2 Calculation and Selection Fund thickness

The background design of the storage tank depends on the following

considerations:

The foundation used to support the tank, the method to be used to dislodge the stored

product, the degree of sedimentation of suspended solid, corrosion of the bottom and tank

size. Which brings us to the use of a flat bottom, where the allowable soil resistance should

be at least 1.465 Kg / cm (3,000 lb / ft).

Funds storage vertical cylindrical tanks are generally made of steel plates used in less than

the body thickness. This is possible for the fund, because I find it supported by a concrete

base, sand or asphalt, burdened by the column of the product; also function fund is to

achieve the tightness so that the product will not leak from the base.

The fund will have to be greater than the outer diameter of the tank diameter at least 51mm
(2 ") and at the discretion of the designer should consider the width for anchoring, plus the
width of the fillet weld of the connection between body and the bottom. The plates with
which the background is enabled should preferably have a 2440mm (94.4 ") wide with a
commercial length of 12000mm (472.44"), the manufacturer obtains in the market, which
can handle in your shop or field smoothly.

The tank body is supported directly by the fund or by an annular plate.

Generally the funds are formed with overlapping plates, this is done in order to adsorb the
deformations suffered by the fund if the plates were welded to the top, and should be
considered an iron reinforcement (backing) thinner.

Table No. 11. According to API-650, Section 5.4, which is below the minimum design
thickness is observed to be considered for the tank bottom sheets, considering the effort
hydrostatic test and the thickness of the first ring.
These thicknesses are considered to be located on the plates a concrete base, uniformly
built under the design parameters indicating the API-650 standard.

7.4.3 Calculation and Selection of plate thickness Cancel

Generally funds are formed with overlapping plates, this is done in order to

absorb the deformations undergone by the background if the plates were welded to the top,

the standard indicates that the solder for this annular plate is tabulated and reaches the

event the thickness of the first ring is equal to the thickness of the annular plate and

therefore equal to the width of the fillet weld applied between the bottom and the wall.

When the use of the annular plate is required, this should have a radial width,

according to what indicated API-650 formula, section 5.5.2 below, but not less than 610mm

(24in), between the tank and any weld, leaving outreach 51mm (2 ") to the overlap with the

floor.

A: 390 tb /(HG)1/2 Equation 5 (API-650, sectin 5.5.2)

Where:

tb : thickness of the annular plate (see 5.5.3) (in)

H: maximum design liquid level (see 5.5.6.3) (ft)

G: Relative density of the liquid to be stored (in any case less than 1)

The annular plate thickness shall not be less than the nominal thickness of 12.5mm listed in
the table, plus the corrosion allowance, specified according to API-650, eleventh edition,

section 5.5.3.

Hardtop conical self supported is a cover formed about the surface of a right cone,

commonly supported on its periphery, are constructed with overlapping plates and are

composed of beams and girders, the girders formed regular polygons and each edge of this

is articulate the beams of beams, girders compounds by, polygons would be responsible for

supporting the beams and roof sheets. It is used for fixed ceilings 9.5 a minimum slope of
37 and a maximum supported by structures and are designed according to its geometrical

shape, in combination with the thickness, to absorb the loads generated by its own weight,

more live loads of at least 1,76kg / cm (25 lb / ft) and have a structure to absorb these

loads.

The roof planks have a minimum thickness of 4.7 mm nominal (3/16 ") and maximum

nominal 12.7mm (1/2") recommended by API- 650, section 5.10.4, the corrosion allowance

may be included to calculated thickness unless the client specifies exclusion.

All supported internal and external roof structural members will have a minimum nominal

thickness of 4,32mm (0.17 inches) in any component thereof, the plates are welded to

overlap the top of the tank (ring crown), with a string of continuous welding only at the top,

and have a width equal to the thickness of the plates of 4,76mm (3/16 ") unless otherwise

specified by the customer.

The slope of the roof should be as mandated by API-650, Section 5.10.5.1 9:12 with a

maximum angle of less than or equal to 37 tilt and a slope with 2:12 minimum angle of

inclination of 9.5, for a minimum thickness of 5mm and 13mm maximum tolerance

exclusive corrosion. For this case we Plano sheet according ICHQ No. 5083E-IM-PDD-

The design and structure calculation involves the bending and cutting, produced by a

central uniformly distributed load caused by the weight of the roof planks, beams, and

pivot or no roof structure only supported at its periphery by the profile coping, these roofs

are designed and calculated for tank not exceeding a diameter of 18,288m (60 feet) but it

is advisable to make these in a maximum diameter of 12,192m (40 feet), and any larger

than shown requires use of a structure capable of supporting the roof, paragraph 5.10.5

API-650, eleventh edition, and standard PDVSA-F-201, section 2012, section 3.10, due

to which the roof planks are considered beams articulated, the base Central thereof will

be provided with stops welded to the beams to prevent lateral displacements of the

beams, and joints of the structures must be properly assembled by screws or welding, to

prevent the joints may have unwanted movements.

less than or equal to calculated value, then the wall-ceiling junction can be considered

fragile, and in the case of excessive internal pressures, fail before failure occurs in the wall

welds, or welding of the bottom wall. The failure of the bond ceiling to the wall is usually

initiated by buckling of the upper corner and followed by the rending of 6.35mm (1/4 ")

continuous welding of the periphery on the roof.

7.4.5 Design and Selection Structures

The design and structure calculation involves the bending and cutting, produced by a
uniformly distributed load caused by the weight of the roof planks, beams, and the central
pivot ring (lock), due to which the roof planks articulated beams are considered.

All parts of the structure will be dimensioned based on calculations made according to the

sum of the maximum static stresses, which shall not exceed the specified limits:

Maximum tensile strength.

For plates are backings in net section, 1406kg / cm (20,000 lb / in)

Welding with full penetration in areas of thin plate, 1266kg / cm (18000lb / in)

Maximum compressive stress.

For rolled steel, where the lateral bending is prevented, 1406 kg / cm (20000lb / in)
Full penetration welding in areas of thin plates 1406 kg / cm (20000lb / in)

Or R1 reaction force produces a positive or clockwise equal to (R1X) time and the resulting
uniform load to the left of x (Wx), produces a negative moment or anticlockwise equal to

-wx (x / 2 ), so that ;

M = (WL x/2)- (W X/2)

For the location of maximum bending moment.

dM / dx = d (Wx / 2 - Wx / 2) / dx substituting in equations moments.

Mmax = WL / 8 For simply supported beams with uniform load

The arrow due to the maximum bending occurs in the middle of the course and as we know:

Equatin 20 (AISC)

7.4.6 Design and Selection stringers.

The stringers are designed with uniformly distributed loads and extreme articulated. Each
beam is considered to support the ceiling tiles plus the live load; said charges extending
on both sides of the crossbar respect to the same center line, so that each beam is
considered equal to bear the length of the beam by the average separation between two
consecutive beams tributary area. Knowing when you flex maximum in a uniformly
distributed load beam occurs in the center of this and as a result, the maximum stress
produced is directly proportional to the square of the beam length.

After determining the load adsorb different beams and their lengths, the maximum time is
calculated so that this value is appropriate to determine the module optimal section for
later recalculating, but now considering the weight of the bar, doing this repeatedly to
achieve balance and to determine the section modulus to be used.

For containers of large diameter, light is reduced by crossbar beams supported at their ends

by columns, forming regular polygons. These beams concur in the center and limit its length:

L/b>13 y L/b< 40 Equatin (21), AISC.

7.4.6.1 calculation of beam with Axial Load.

The structural members under axial compression tend to buckling caused by an axial
force (P), in the column length (L), the bending moment M equal to P by the lever arm
and induces bending stress equal to Mc / I, to which is added the compressive stress

P / a. Where:

f : Mc/l + P/A : Pyc/I + P/A Equatin 22 (AISC)

By definition:

I : A r where; r : radius of gyration

f : P/A(yc/r + 1)

The beam can be compared to a simply supported beam with load evenly, so it:

f : Mc/I ; M : W L/8 ; Y : 5W(L)/384EI

It can be used to solve the product (yc).

yc : C1L ; C1: 5f/48E Constant

So.

P/A: f (1 + C2 (L/r)) Equatin 23 (AISC)

Where C2 depends upon the material, the load support and method, no method is known
to calculate theoretically the constant C2 and this is determined by experimentation.

For values of L / r between 60 and 200 so the use of the following formula for steel
columns is recommended.

P / A: 1.265 / (1 + (18000r)) Equation 24 (AISC)

For columns that have values of L / r between 0 and 60 this equation is not used, but a maximum
value of compressive stress equal to 1,055 kg / cm is specified.

For values of L / r greater than 200 formula is used:

P/A : 1.406/(1+(L/2000b)) Equatin 25(AISC)

The constant C2 is specified by the American Institute of Steel Construction.

Where:

L: unsupported length (cm)

b : width of the compression section.

This formula is limited by the conditions in which L> 15b but L <40b

The value of 1406 kg / cm specified in the numerator of the above equation is allowed

because the maximum bending stress exists only in the outer fibers combined with the

compressive stress.
