- Have students line up on the baseline and go through the different
swinging motions and the ready position.

grabs the shuttle. Then they stand across from their partner
around the gymnasium on a court.

2. Serving Introduction (LO 1) (10-15 mins)

- Demonstrate the motions of a serve. The purpose is to work on
hand eye coordination of hitting the shuttle.
- Have students practice several serves without
the net or target in order to get the motion of drop and swing done
together.
- Serving Keys: Racket must remain below the
hips (under hand serve) Hold the shuttle out in front and lights
drop it to coincide with the racket swing.
- Students will move forward so everyone is
standing on the service line and now they will all serve across the
net altogether.
- Then we will all go grab the Pre-Assessment of overall
shuttle and serve back over the net. This is to get the badminton skills:
students used to net service.
Progression Partner Serving
- Students will serve to their partner; Let the
shuttle drop to ensure that it is going past the short service line.
- Underhand serve; hold the shuttle in front of
you and lightly release it and swing to make contact.
- Backhand serve; Your racket head and wrist
must remain below the waist. Same release for the service.

3. Racket Swings (10 mins)

- Ensure that you have enough space that you will not hit anyone
around you.
- Stance: Wide feet, bend your knees, ready position means racket
up!
- Students will serve to their partner who will return the birdie with
one stroke.
- Overhead shot: relate this to throwing a ball; Same steps and
motion.
- Ready Position; Step Back; Scratch your back;
Step through.
- This is our overhand clear and would be an
offensive play.
- Underhand shot: This would be a defensive shot.
- Still use the step through, though the racket
comes from below the waist.

4. Cooperative Rally (Pre-Assessment for Unit) (LO 1&2) (10 mins) Time
permitting
- Inform students that a cooperative rally is working with the
person on the other side of the net to keep the shuttle in the air.
- To start the rally they must work on the serve that we were just
practicing.
- Inform students at this time that the purpose of rallying today is to
see where they are at with their badminton skills as a pre-assessment and
since we have the whole gym today we will use all the space.

Closure/Cool Down (2mins)
