INTRODUCTION

1.25yearsafter"NostraAetate"

Itis25yearssince"NostraAetate",thedeclarationoftheSecondVaticanCouncilonthe
Church'srelationshiptootherreligions,waspromulgated.Thedocumentstressedthe
importanceofinterreligiousdialogue.Atthesametime,itrecalledthattheChurchisinduty

19.ThehistoryofGod'ssalvificaction

TheOldTestamenttestifiesthatfromthebeginningofcreationGodmadeaCovenantwithall
peoples(Gn1:11).Thisshowsthatthereisbutonehistoryofsalvationforthewholeof
humankind.TheCovenantwithNoah,themanwho"walkedwithGod"(Gn6:9),issymbolic

whichseesitsfinalfulfillmentinJesusChristinwhomisestablishedthenewanddefinitive

20.BeyondtheconfinesoftheChosenPeople

ThereligiousconsciousnessofIsraelischaracterizedbyadeepawarenessofitsuniquestatus
asGod'sChosenPeople.Thiselection,accompaniedbyaprocessofformationandcontinuous
exhortationstopreservethepurityofmonotheism,constitutesamission.Theprophets
continuallyinsistonloyaltyandfidelitytotheOneTrueGodandspeakaboutthepromised
Messiah.Andyettheseprophets,particularlyatthetimeoftheExile,bringauniversal
perspective,forGod'ssalvationisunderstoodtoextendbeyondandthroughIsraeltothe
nations.ThusIsaiahforetellsthatinthefinaldaysthenationswillstreamtothehouseofthe
Lord,andtheywillsay:"Come,letusgouptothemountainoftheLord,tothehouseofthe
GodofJacobthathemayteachushiswaysandthatwemaywalkinhispaths"(Is52:10).In
theWisdomliteraturealso,whichbearswitnesstoculturalexchangesbetweenIsraelandits
neighbours,theactionofGodinthewholeuniverseisclearlyaffirmed.Itgoesbeyondthe
boundariesoftheChosenPeopletotouchboththehistoryofnationsandthelivesof
individuals.

21.TheuniversalmissionofJesus

23.Thecallingofallpeoples

ReferencesintheNewTestamenttothereligiouslifeoftheGentilesandtotheirreligious

24.TheFathersofthefirstcenturies

ThepostBiblicaltraditionalsocontainscontrastingdata.Negativejudgementsonthe

Godhasalready,inanincompleteway,manifestedhimself.ThismanifestationoftheLogosis

25.Thetheologyofhistory

Infact,theseearlyFathersofferwhatmaybecalledatheologyofhistory.Historybecomes
salvationhistory,inasmuchasthroughitGodprogressivelymanifestshimselfand
communicateswithhumankind.Thisprocessofdivinemanifestationandcommunication
reachesitsclimaxintheincarnationoftheSonofGodinJesusChrist.Forthisreason,
Irenaeusdistinguishesfour"covenants"givenbyGodtothehumanrace:inAdam,inNoah,in
Moses,andinJesusChrist(11).Thesamepatristiccurrent,whoseimportanceisnottobe
