Quadratic Equations/Functions Webercise

Use the links in each section to answer the questions or to do the

activities.
Proof of Quadratic Equation:
Watch the following video to answer the questions below:
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/quadratics/solving-quadratics-using-
the-quadratic-formula/v/proof-of-quadratic-formula.

1. What method is used to derive the quadratic formula?

2. Derive the quadratic formula from the equation 2 + + = 0. (just like the
video).

3. Can you get the equation 2 + + = 0 from the quadratic formula? If yes,
please show the steps, if no please explain why not.

Quadratic Equations and Functions:

You might recall from integrated Math I what a quadratic function is, but if you
dont, its okay! This next activity will refresh your memory on quadratic functions
and some of the methods learned in lesson 1. (Note: quadratic equations are of
the form = + + and a quadratic function is of the form () = + +
. ) Watch the video found at this link: http://www.virtualnerd.com/algebra-
2/quadratics/graphing/definitions-functions/quadratic-function-definition.

1. What is the difference between () = 2 + + and = 2 + + ? Is

there a difference?

2. What are some differences between the functions listed in the yes and no
columns in the video?

Finding Maximum and Minimum Values:

A. Use the following websites to answer the questions below.
http://spmaddmaths.onlinetuition.com.my/2013/05/maximum-and-minimum-value-
of-quadratic.html.

1. What method is used to find the maximum and minimum points of a quadratic
function?

2. Compare and contrast the 4 characteristics that define a minimum point and a
maximum point.

B. View the examples in this website to see how to complete the square to find
the minimum and maximum values:
http://spmaddmaths.onlinetuition.com.my/2014/02/example-finding-maximum-
and-minimum.html.

1. Chose one of the examples and write down the solution with an explanation next
to each step about what was specifically done. (Explanations can be two or three
words, for example, add one). Also please label which problem you do and label
the steps.

Problem Explanation

C. Use the following website to find the min/max value of the quadratic equations
below.
http://www.wolframalpha.com/widgets/view.jsp?id=372d3f309fef061977fb2f7ba36
d74d. You do not need to show work, just write the answer. When you get to the
website select minimum or maximum (Select the one you think will apply to the
equation, if wrong select the second option) and then type in the equation. Then
do a quick sketch of the graph like in the example.
Problem Min/Max Graph
2
Ex. 4 + 6 + 10 Min.

2 + 2

3 2 + 8 12

2 2 + 4 6

D. Use the following website for the following problems:

https://www.geogebra.org/m/FfjNMHGT.

For each of the following problems use the graph to determine if the graph has a
maximum or a minimum, if given please provide the x-intercepts.
1. 2 + 4 + 4

2. 2 5

3. 3 2 + 5 + 5
Real Life Examples:
A. In this section you will look at different examples of how quadratic
equations are used in real life. Use the following website to answer the
questions. https://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/quadratic-equation-real-
world.html.

1. Look through the first four examples. For each example, write a brief summary of
what you are trying to solve, write down what method was used to solve the
equation, and finally explain what other method could have been used to solve
the problem, and why the method used might be the better option for this
problem.

a. Throwing a Ball

b. New Sports Bike

c. Small Steel Frame

d. River Cruise

B. In this activity you will continue to explore different ways to solve quadratic
equations. You will look at more real life examples in the websites listed
below. With a partner you are to choose one problem, you will be solving
that same problem but using a different method than the one used in the
original problem. For example, if the problem is solved using the quadratic
formula you can solve it by completing the square. You will create a
poster/flier in Microsoft word, the poster/flier will have the problem written,
the URL where the problem is coming from, the name of the method that
was used in the example and the name of the method you will be using,
write brief explanation for each step, and finally a graph of the equation.
You can use https://www.desmos.com/calculator to graph the problem and
then screen shot the graph and insert into word. If you do not finish this,
you can finish it at home. You will present to the class the next day.
The following websites contain real life examples; some are videos with the
problems. If you need further assistance, please ask me for help.
