Factual Writing For Print

Factual print products can be defined as pieces of the media

platform that contain factual information in the form of a printable
structure. Usually used for advertisement, examples of such
structures include, leaflets, posters, flyers, and websites. The aim of
a factual print product is to be disputed and shared around a
particular community, to grasp an audience that may be interested
in the product or service the print advertises. the information given
on a factual print product is specifically prepared to entertain the
knowledgeable needs of their audience, to gain customers for the
company's business

The example I have used is a booklet about higher education. The

booklet contains 12 pages, each with information on what higher
education is, why its important, and course choices for the included
educational facilities. It also states a few the companies partners that
created the booklet. These partners include: the Student Loans
Company, University awards, and also UCAS.

The booklet I am covering contains information on higher education, as

already covered, it contains information like what it is, and where to
find it. As well as this it also contains information for students, like what
life would be like in higher education.

For the target audience, the booklet would be aimed towards students
in college, or in the last few years of secondary school. With this, the
demographics would include a unisex range, with an age group of
around 14 to 19, as well as having no occupation, since it appeals to
students. With this said, the socio economic groups of the target
audience would be class E, which is unemployed, and class D-, if the
student has a part time job. The geo demographic of the leaflet would
be anywhere in the UK. To be more specific, it would be found in
existing educational facilities in the UK, especially in cities, where
numerous variations of facilities may reside. As well as this, the
psychographics of the target audience would be succeeders, as they
are known to be the ones who want to do well in a job environment,
which this leaflet offers with a higher education.

The leaflet uses 5 dominant colours in their layout: red, blue, green,
yellow, and pink. The red connotes passion and love, which could
portray the feelings that the target audience may fell for their career,
and that they may choose higher education to excel their job
performance once they get one. The blue connotes tranquillity, which
could portray the idea that a higher education will make your life
calmer, as you wont need to worry about jobs, since you would be
easy to find one with the qualifications you could achieve. It could also
connote the idea that the environment in higher education is tranquil,
which would appeal to the target audience, as some may suffer with
anxiety. The green connotes nature and success, as well as hope, which

could connote the future events that could take place in higher
education (graduation, good grades, etc.). Yellow connotes happiness
and youth, which could be used to persuade the audience that they will
be happier if they choose higher education. The colour pink connotes
excitement, and brightness. This could be used to portray the fun that
the audience may have while in higher education, and could have been
used as a persuasion.

Some images that are used contribute to the aesthetic of the leaflet.
There are five in total, but they are used throughout the leaflet, giving
the illusion of content. Two images show school students in a work
environment, which fit the aesthetic of the leaflet as they are showing
people participating in higher education. Each photo includes a group
of students working, and partaking in class. However they all are
smiling, meaning happiness. This could connote that higher education
is an enjoyable programme, which would persuade the target audience.
Two other images show a group of student enjoying each others
company and studying together, from what it looks like, in their free
time. I get this impression because both sets of students are in their
casual clothing, rather than a uniform. As well as this, they are in a
living/bed room environment, with sofas and beds. These images could
connote that there is an opportunity to make new friends within higher
education, and that the work needed can be done easily with friends.
The last image shows a shot of a graduation ceremony, with the classic
hat throwing tradition. This could connote the success of the
programme, and that there is a lot to gain from the experience. As
already mentioned, the images are used numerously throughout the
booklet, however that are all given a different colour gradient.
Including yellow, which ends up being hard to see and not effective.
This could connote that the company that provided the booklets have
no clue when it comes to graphic design, which is contradictory since
the booklet is about education.

The booklet contains many different simple graphics, however, they all
have a theme: roundness. By this I mean that nearly every graphic
used in this leaflet are created with mostly circles. The use of a circle,
or any rounded shape, connotes friendliness since round shapes consist
of smooth curves rather than pointy corners and bulky straight lines.
This addition could help persuade the target audience that higher
education is a positive experience.

The clarity of an informational print platform is important, as they need

to grasp the audiences attention, and keep it, without boring them, or
even frustrating them due to lack of information or guides. The booklet
I am covering includes a contents page, as well as each page
containing many headings and sub headings, which are clearer to see
with their larger font and different colour. This is a good use of space as
it helps break up the text, which could provide difficult to read for
younger people, who have a short attention span. With this, the

Darci Metcalf
Unit 52. Factual Writing For Print

information desired is easy to find. As well as this, it is apparent that

the leaflets pages contain mostly text, which could put off the target
audience, however, the only reason it is like this is because the text
has a large font, making it easier to read. The images are related to the
text, however with the overuse of said images, they lose their influence
on the text accompanied.

The accuracy of information in a leaflet is important because the

audience may be persuaded to check out the services that the leaflet
contains, only to find out its false. Which could lead to bad publicity for
the company. The information in the leaflet I have looked at seems to
be telling the truth. I get this impression because the leaflet mostly
talks about experiences that could arise in higher education. This kind
of content relies solely on the unique experience that a customer may
have. So that means the information can only influence the real thing.

As already mentioned, the booklet doesnt really contain any facts,

other than known truths that many different sources could inform.
However, this booklet doesnt show any references to any of the
information given in the booklet. This means that all of the information
in the booklet is original content, and that it may not be as trusted as
official documentation on the subject.

An issue regarding this leaflet is the possibility of photographing people

under the age of 18. this could bring up issues towards filming children,
as well as the proper legal consent forms which apply to it. Those being
a parent or guardian accepting for the person to be used for
promotional imagery.

Then provide an explanation on the following and how they apply to

the examples you have chosen:

#2
The second example of factual print product I have chosen is a flyer for
sexual health. The flyer was found in the library of an educational
facility (College), and was produced by the Virgin Care branch. The
leaflet is associated with the NHS.

The target demographic for the audience it is reaching for would

contain the likes of youths in their mid-teens, who may be thinking
about sex due to their age being newly allowed into this area. This
means it would appeal to a unisex audience. However, this would most
likely be directed more to females, as most of the used graphic design
in the work contain different pills, which could connote the use of
different pills for birth control. As well as this, the occupation of the
demographic would most likely be for students, meaning the socio
economic group would fall around the E/ D- category. The geo

Darci Metcalf

demographic for this leaflet would be for within the area of north east
Lincolnshire, as the leaflet clearly states that this is the only area with
this type of flyer for young people. To be more specific, the place where
this would most likely be seen is inside educational facilities, where
older students may be interested in the activity, that the leaflet states.
The psychographics of the target audience may comply with the needs
of an explorer, who like new challenges, which refers to the new
amount of freedom that is given to the age of consent, and the
reformer, who like independent judgement, and like to benefit from
new experiences. These two would be interested in this leaflet, as it
provides a guide as to how to take care of yourself during these
activities.

The flyer I am covering contains many different colours in its scheme.

Red, however, is the most dominant, as it is used for the background of
the flyer. The colour symbolised love and passion, which is relevant to
the flyers topic, however, it could also connote danger, which could be
referring to the danger of sexual health if not abided to. Three other
colours used in the flyer are orange, blue and green. The orange
connotes fun and happiness, which could connote the feelings that
could be associated with the theme. The blue connotes truth and
wisdom, which could connote the idea that the information given is to
be trusted, and that it can provide a relaxed mind due to not worrying
over false information. This ties in with the connotation of tranquillity,
which also is related to blue. The colour green represents nature, which
could symbolise that the flyer is trying to normalise the idea of sex
within the target audiences life.

There are no images in the flyer, however, there are a lot of different
graphics shown all over the flyer. The use of a heart could connote the
feelings of a romantic love, which are usually associated in sex. There
are also graphics of different coloured condoms, which symbolise the
health of a male when regarding this topic. There are also different pills
and pill bottles Shown on the leaflet, which could relate to the females
health relating to this topic. I make this link because I believe that the
different pills could symbolise the different types of birth control that
are available in pill form. There is also the use of a parachute, which
could connote that this flyer id for the safety of others, as is a
parachute for a sky diver.

The clarity of an informational print platform is important, as they need

to grasp the audiences attention, and keep it, without boring them, or
even frustrating them due to lack of information or guides. The flyer I
am covering contains little information, other than a list of services that
the company could provide for you. Other than that, it contains a
website address, and a phone number for further information. With the
lack of information on it, the flyer must compensate, and make the font
larger to appear more informative. The lack of information makes any
information easy to find since there is not much there to search

Darci Metcalf
Unit 52. Factual Writing For Print

through. Then again, this means that any desired information is not
viewable, and must be seen through the website provided. Though this
makes the font easy to read, it also alienates the text. The graphics
that are coupled with the text are relevant to the text, meaning that it
makes the text easy to understand.

The accuracy of the information relating to this factual print product is

important because it is in relation to health. The issue of false
information in a flyer about health can be drastic, as it could lead to
the severe injury of another person. This is more severe than that of an
educational booklet, as it can possibly result in the death of a person.
However, In this case, there is little to no information on the leaflet,
other than just listing possible procedures that the service can provide
for you such as family planning and HIV testing. I believe that due to
its recent creation, and the where its located geographically, this
Information is true

#3
The third example of factual print is a leaflet about motorbike renting
and lessons. This leaflet was found in the library an educational facility.
This leaflet was produced by the Humber rural community council.

The audience for this leaflet would be for young people aged 17-20
years. I get this figure because of where it is distributed, As well as this,
I am able to gather the occupation of the target audience, with it being
among students or young people with an apprenticeship, meaning the
socio economic group would vary from E to D-. The geo demographic of
this leaflet is for within the surrounding areas of Grimsby, and Grimsby
itself. This is because the leaflet is to promote a local company rather
than a national one. The leaflet would not appeal to those in the
outside areas. The psychographics of the target audience would appeal
to explorers, as they appeal to use business that is lesser known than
mainstream brands.

The colour scheme of this leaflet is more apparent that the other two
that I have covered. It consists of a simple gradient progression of
different shades of blue, on a white background. The use of blue
connotes tranquillity, which could refer to the ease of mind that could
be experienced when using the service advertised. It also
communicated stability and confidence, which could be used to
describe the company as a whole. Which could interest possible
customers.

The imagery used is made up of lots of indoor footage, savouring the

indoors of the shop/service, with people being presented certificates
and keys, to a (motorbike licence). This could portray the friendliness of
the company with its customer service. As well as this the front cover

Darci Metcalf
Unit 52. Factual Writing For Print

image shows a row of motorbikes. This demonstrates the service

directly, to interest the target audience.

The clarity of content regarding this leaflet is important because the

size of the business needs to rely on the clear information for the
audience, to get business. If the information in the leaflet was hard to
locate, young people with a short attention span would give up, and
look elsewhere for business deals. This also ties in well with the
accuracy of information, regarding the fact that it is a small business.

The information given in the leaflet is clean and without fault. It is clear
that the leaflet pride themselves with information that is straight to the
point. The language used is not directed towards young people, as it is
formal, however its criteria it lists fit the demographic. The information
is divided into bullet points, which makes it easier to read. Which is
useful for a young target audience, and making it easy to find the
specific information you want. On top of this, the images are relevant
to the text, making it easier to understand.
