Solution:
Consider the given figure above

The first that we need to do is to divide the given figure

into rectangular parallelepiped as follows
[Type the document title]

There are one large rectangular parallelepiped and 6 small

rectangular parallelepiped in the given figure. Let's
assume that the steps of a ladder have 6 small rectangular
parallelepiped whose dimensions are all congruent to
each other.
For the large rectangular parallelepiped which is the
landing, the volume is

For the small rectangular parallelepiped which is the step

3. Prism is a polyhedron in which two faces are equal polygons in parallel planes, and all
other faces are parallelograms. There are two types of prism; oblique prism and right
prism. Oblique prism is when the axis is not perpendicular to the base and right prismif
the axis is parallel to the base. In right prism, all lateral areas are rectangle.

Formulas

Volume

[Math Processing Error]V=ARL

[Math Processing Error]V=Abh

Lateral Area

[Math Processing Error]AL=PRL

Where
V = volume of the prism
AR = area of the right section
L = length of the lateral side
Ab = area of the base
h = altitude
AL = area of the lateral side
PR = perimeter of the right section
Note that for right prism, AR = Ab and L = h.

Name of a Prism
The name of a prism is according to the shape its base and according to
the orientation of the axis. The naming according to orientation of the axis
is specifically used for right prism. Example, if the base of the prism is a
pentagon like the figure above, it is called pentagonal prism. If the base is
a regular pentagon, then the name of the prism is regular pentagonal
prism. If the shape of the base is a regular pentagon and the axis of the
prism is perpendicular to the base, the prism is called right regular
pentagonal prism. However, if the problem will just mention pentagonal
prism without specifying regular pentagon or right, it is most of the time a
right regular pentagonal prism.

Elements of a Prism

Base
Prism has two equal parallel bases, the upper and lower base. The area of the
base is denoted by Ab.

Altitude
The perpendicular distance distance
between the upper and lower bases and
is denoted by h.

Axis
The line that connects the centroid of
upper and lower bases. The length of
axis is equal to the length of the lateral
edge.

Lateral Edge
Lateral are or lateral side is a line that connects the corresponding vertices of the
bases. Edge in general is the line made by the intersection of two faces. Lateral
edge is the line formed by the intersection of two lateral faces.

Lateral Area
Area of the side of the prism, it is denoted by A L.

Right Section
Right section is the section made by a cutting plane that is perpendicular to the
axis of the prism. The area of the right section is denoted by A R.

Vertex
Vertex is a point formed by the intersection of three or more edges. Note that at
least three edges must intersect to define the vertex of a solid.

6. A trough is formed by nailing together, edge to edge, two
boards 11 ft. in length, so that the right section is a right
triangle. If 15 gals. of water are poured into the trough and
if the trough is held level so that a right section of the
water is an isosceles right triangle, how deep is the water?

7.A football stand 150 yd. long has 20 tiers of seats; each
tier has a rise of 2 ft. and tread of 3 ft. It is constructed of
reinforced concrete with a cross section as shown. Find
the amount of material used in its construction.

Solution:
Consider the given figure above

[Type the document title]

The first thing that we need to do is to isolate the given

figure which is the 20 tiers of seat section as follows

Photo by Math Principles in Everyday Life

At the first layer, there is one block whose dimension is 2'

x 3'. At the second layer, there are two blocks. At the third
layer, there are three blocks, and so on. We need to get
the total number of blocks so that we can get the area of
the section. Since there's a sequence of number of blocks
for each layer by arithmetic progression, then we can get
the total number of blocks by using the sum of n terms as
follows

The total area of blocks is

8.The Pennsylvania Railroad found it necessary, owing to

land slides upon the roadbed, to reduce the angle of
inclination of one bank of a certain railway cut near
Pittsburgh, PA, from an original angle of 45 to a new
angle of 30. The bank as it originally stood was 200 ft.
long and had a slant length of 60 ft. Find the amount of the
earth removed, if the top level of the bank remained
unchanged.
[Type the document title]

Photo by Math Principles in Everyday Life

Solution:
The given figure is the cross section of a bank. The darker
area of the cross section will be removed so that the
inclination will be 30 instead of 45. The darker area is
also an obtuse triangle and we need to find the area of
that one. Let's start to get the sides of the triangle by
analyzing the figure as follows

Consider the 45 triangle in order to solve for h and c as

follows

Consider the 30 triangle in order to solve for d as follows

The base of a triangle can be calculated as follows

The area of a triangle is also the area of the base is
